DICKINSON, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) held off Dickinson State (N.D.) 6-2 in the third game of a rare North Star Athletic Association baseball tripleheader Saturday evening at Dakota Community Bank & Trust Ballpark. The Trojans opened with a 5-0 lead in the first five-and-half innings.
Dakota State improved to 18-20 overall record and 11-12 record in league play. Dickinson State is 12-18 overall record and 10-8 NSAA conference record.
The Trojans and the Blue Hawks will attempt to play the final game of the four-game series, a nine-inning contest, on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (Central Time)/1 p.m. (Mountain Time), weather permitting.
Game 3: Dakota State (S.D.) 6, Dickinson State (N.D.) 2 – FINAL
- Dakota State earned the first lead of the game in the top first inning. Ryan McDaniel led off with a walk. Alec Gannon, courtesy runner for McDaniel, was forced out after Samuel Drummond fielder's choice.
- Jace Pribyl hit a single to advance Drummond to second base for DaSU in the top first. Mason Macaluso followed up with a single to set up a bases loaded situation with one out. Chris Kropuenske hit an RBI ground out to score Drummond to give Trojans a 1-0 lead.
- McDaniel and Drummond led off the top third inning with back-to-back doubles. Drummond produce an RBI double to score Gannon (runner for McDaniel) to extend Trojans' lead to 2-0. A pair of wild pitches by the Blue Hawks allowed Drummond to score home to widen DaSU's lead to 3-0.
- Walker Hultgren scored a run in the top fourth inning for Dakota State, thanks to his lead-off single. He advanced to second base after Josh Addington's sacrifice bunt. McDaniel reached safely on base after DiSU's defensive error and advanced Hultgren to third base. Drummond produced an RBI single to score Hultgren to put DaSU up 4-0.
- McDaniel and Drummond recorded another back-to-back lead-off doubles in the top sixth frame. Drummond collected an RBI to score Gannon (runner for McDaniel) for a 5-0 lead in favor of Dakota State.
- Dickinson State halted its scoring drought with a pair of runs in the bottom sixth. Jacob Clinton kicked off with a double, followed by a 2-run home blast by Mathias Dufner to cut DaSU's lead to 5-2.
- The Blue Hawks left the bases full when the sixth inning ended as the Trojans' defense halted their scoring chances.
- Chris Burke was hit-by-pitch to start the top seventh inning for Dakota State. He swiped to second base and advanced to third on the same play caused by DiSU's defensive miscue. Hultgren hit an RBI single to score Burke for 6-2 DaSU lead.
- Dickinson State left the bases full in the final inning, securing the victory for Dakota State.
- Drummond sparked the Trojans' offense with two doubles, single and drove in a game-high three RBIs. McDaniel added two doubles and two walks. Hultgren was 2-of-4 at the plate with two singles and an RBI. Pribyl and Macaluso each had a single and a walk. Kropuenske tallied an RBI and a walk. Josh Van Beek and Burke each also had a walk. Burke and Hultgren each swiped one base.
- Dufner had a home run, single and collected two RBIs for the Blue Hawks. Clinton added a double. Kobe Krenz was 3-of-4 at the plate with three singles. Derrick Calvillo and Karson Backer had a single.
- Dickinson State left 12 runners on base compared to Dakota State 11 runners left on base. The Trojans had nine hits, while the Blue Hawks had eight hits.
- Kahlil Tilbury (W, 2-2) earned the victory on the pitching mound for DaSU. He pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. He tallied five strikeouts. JD Kirchner (S, 2) earned the save after tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, yielding the Blue Hawks to one hit.
- Rhys Pope (L, 0-1) took the defeat after pitching two innings for DiSU. He allowed three runs on four hits. Tyler Gray worked for three inning sin relief, giving up two runs on four hits. Kobe Krenz worked the final two innings, giving up one run on one hit.
