Blue Hawks close out NSAA softball 4-game series with 4-1 victory over Trojans

DICKINSON, N.D. – Dickinson State (N.D.) closed out the North Star Athletic Association softball four-game series with a 4-1 victory over Dakota State (S.D.) Sunday at North Softball Complex.  The Blue Hawks earned a 3-1 record in the four-game series.

Dakota State is 14-28 overall record and 8-16 record in North Star contests (fifth place in the conference standings).  Dickinson State is 26-13 overall record and 15-8 league record, trailing one-half game behind Mayville State (N.D.) for third place in the conference standings.

The Trojans step aside of their North Star conference play with a pair of non-conference doubleheaders against the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  DaSU visits Briar Cliff (Iowa) on Wednesday at Bishop Mueller Field in Sioux City, Iowa, and Northwestern (Iowa) on Thursday at NW Softball Diamond in Orange City, Iowa.  Both doubleheaders are set for 3 p.m. start.

Dakota State wraps up their regular-season schedule at home next weekend, hosting Viterbo (Wis.) in the North Star's four-game series at Thue Field.

Game 4:  Dickinson State (N.D.) 4, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

  • The Blue Hawks earned its first lead of the game in the bottom second inning.  Emilie Sickler led off with a single and advanced to second after Paige Callahan's walk.  Ashley Nash followed up with a single to set up a bases loaded situation.  Sickler scored home after a defensive error by the Trojans to earn a 1-0 DiSU lead.
  • Dickinson State added a run in the bottom fourth frame.  Katelyn Kubitschek hit a single and advanced to second base after Kennedy Kuntz's walk.  Jaya Allen produced an RBI single to score Kubitschek to give the Blue Hawks a 2-0 lead.
  • The Trojans' defense halted the Blue Hawks' scoring chances as they ended the fourth inning with a double play.
  • DiSU made it 3-0 in the bottom fifth as Dallis Mitchell hit a lead-off solo home run.
  • Dakota State ended their scoring drought in the top sixth frame.  Rosie Philop led off with a single.  She advanced to second base after a passed ball by the Blue Hawks.  Sarah Torres hit a single to advance Philop to third base.  Xitlali Lopez hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Philop as the Trojans trailed 3-1.
  • Dickinson State answered with a run scored in the bottom half of the sixth inning, highlighted by Kubitschek's double.  Allen reached safely on base caused by the Trojans' defensive miscue and allowed Kubitschek to score for 4-1 DiSU lead.
  • The Trojans left a runner on base in the final inning, securing the series victory with a 3-1 record for the Blue Hawks.
  • Torres finished the game by going 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles for Dakota State.  Philop added a single and scored a run.  Mackenzie Sims had a double.  Xi. Lopez produced an RBI.
  • Allen was 2-of-3 with two singles and drove in two runs for Dickinson State.  Enriquez added a double and single.  Mitchell had a home run and an RBI.  Sickler had two singles and a stolen base.
  • DiSU outhit DaSU 11-4 in the game.  The Blue Hawks left nine runners on base compared to the Trojans five runners left on base.
  • Xi. Lopez (L, 9-12) took the setback in the pitching circle for the Trojans.  She tossed a complete game and allowed four runs (one unearned) on 11 hits.  She recorded five strikeouts.
  • Allen (W, 11-4) earned a complete game victory for the Blue Hawks.  She yielded the Trojans to one run on four hits and registered four strikeouts.
