MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) cruised past Viterbo (Wis.) 11-2 in five innings in the North Star Athletic Association softball four-game series opener on a warm Saturday at Thue Field. The Trojans fell short from their come-from-behind in the second game after trailing 5-0. The V-Hawks earned the doubleheader split by the score of 5-4.
Dakota State is 16-32 overall record and 9-17 record in North Star conference (fifth in the conference standings). Viterbo is 7-33 overall record and 7-19 NSAA conference record, moving up two spots in the conference standings from eighth place to sixth place after other NSAA's conference action on Saturday.
Due to thunderstorms in the forecast Sunday afternoon, both teams are set to wrap up their regular-season schedule with another doubleheader with the first game starting at 11 a.m. There will be a brief Senior Day ceremony after the conclusion of the first game.
Game 1: Dakota State (S.D.) 11, Viterbo (Wis.) 2 – FINAL/5 innings
- Sarah Torres blasted a triple with one out in the bottom first inning for the Trojans. Xitlali Lopez followed up with an RBI single to score Torres for 1-0 DSU lead.
- The Trojans plated four runs in the bottom half of the second frame. Xotchil Lopez led off with a double and advanced to second when Julia Andersen reached safely on first after VU's defensive error with one out. Madison Aldendifer reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation.
- Melissa Krapf recorded a fielder's choice, while Xo. Lopez was forced out in the bottom second for DSU. On the same play, the V-Hawks committed a defensive error to allow Andersen to score to widen Trojans' lead to 2-0.
- Dakota State made it 3-0 in the bottom second when Viterbo committed another defensive error when Krapf advanced to second base on defensive indifference, allowing Aldendifer to score.
- Whitesides drilled an RBI triple to score Krapf to balloon DSU's lead to 4-0 in the bottom second. Torres followed up with an RBI single to score Whitesides to make it 5-0 in favor of the Trojans.
- Viterbo scored once in the top third. Channing Manske hit a single and swiped to second base. She advanced to third base on the same play caused by DSU's defensive error. Caitlin Brown produced an RBI ground out to score Manske as the V-Hawks trailed 5-1.
- Kendyl Schine led off with a single and scored home on the same play caused by DSU's misplayed grounder as VU trimmed DSU's lead to 5-2 in the top third.
- Dakota State exploded for six runs in the bottom fourth inning to widen their lead. Aldendifer led off with a walk. Krapf followed up with a single and advanced Aldendifer to second base. Aldendifer and Krapf each recorded a double steal (advanced to third and second base).
- DSU ballooned their lead to 7-2 in the bottom fourth when Whitesides hit a 2-RBI single to score Aldendifer and Krapf (Whitesides advanced to second base after VU's defensive error on the same play). Torres added a single to advance Whitesides to third base. Whitesides was tagged out at home after Xi. Lopez fielder's choice (Torres advanced to second base).
- Vinitzia Blanco collected an RBI single to score Torres to put DSU up 8-2 in the bottom fourth (Xi. Lopez advanced to second).
- After a pitching change by the V-Hawks, Xo. Lopez blasted a 2-RBI triple to score Xi. Lopez and Madissen Larson (pinch runner for Blanco) as DSU's lead grew to 10-2.
- Dakota State's lead went up to 11-2 after a wild pitch committed by Viterbo, allowing Xo. Lopez to score in the bottom fourth frame.
- DSU secured the victory due to eight-run mercy rule in the fifth inning as the V-Hawks left a runner on base.
- Xo. Lopez and Torres each went 3-of-3 at the plate for the Trojans. Xo. Lopez collected a triple, double, single and drove in two RBIs, while Torres drove in one run. Whitesides added a triple, single and earned three RBIs. Xi. Lopez and Blanco each had a single and an RBI. Krapf had a hit and scored twice. Krapf and Aldendifer each swiped one base for Dakota State.
- Brown had a single and an RBI for the V-Hawks. Schine, Janelle Ulaszek and Manske each had single.
- Dakota State poured in 11 hits in the game compared to Viterbo four hits. Both teams left two runners on base.
- Xi. Lopez (W, 11-13) earned the victory after working for four innings in the pitching circle for DSU. She limited VU to two unearned runs on three hits. Rosie Philop tossed a scoreless fifth inning in relief. Her 11th win in a single season is the tied for fourth most single season wins with Jeny Garst in 2004.
- Ulaszek (L, 3-9) took the loss for VU. She pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up 10 runs (four unearned) on 10 hits. Amanda Bogdonovich worked for the final two outs in relief, allowing an unearned run on one hit.
Game 2: Viterbo (Wis.) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL
- Viterbo opened with a 3-0 lead in the second game of the doubleheader and extended their lead to 5-0 after five innings. The Trojans stormed back with four runs in the bottom sixth inning but fell short.
- Brown led off the second game with a triple and scored home caused by a defensive error on the same play to give VU a quick 1-0 lead.
- Autumn Olson followed up with a single and swiped to second base in the top first for the V-Hawks. She added another stolen base to third base. Schine produced an RBI single to score Olson to increase VU's lead to 2-0.
- Morgan James hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Schine to third. Schine scored home caused by DSU's defensive error to widen V-Hawks' lead to 3-0.
- Viterbo added two more runs in the top fifth inning. Olson led off with a single. She swiped to second base. Schine drilled an RBI double to score Olson to make it 4-0 in favor of the V-Hawks (Schine advanced to third base after DSU's defensive error).
- Schine scored home after a wild pitch committed by the Trojans, widening VU's lead to 5-0 in the top fifth.
- Dakota State halted its scoring drought after plating four runs in the bottom sixth. After the first two outs of the bottom sixth were recorded, Blanco opened its scoring surge with a single. Xo. Lopez hit an RBI double to score Olivia Peterson (pinch runner for Blanco) as the Trojans trailed 5-1.
- McKenzie Hermanson, pinch hitter for Lia Chan, followed up with an RBI single to score Xo. Lopez as DSU cut VU's lead to 5-2 in the bottom sixth. Andersen followed up with a single to advance Chan to second. On the same play, both Chan and Andersen scored home caused by VU's defensive error as the Trojans trimmed their deficit to 5-4.
- Dakota State's comeback attempt fell short as they left a runner on base in the final inning, securing the victory for Viterbo.
- Xo. Lopez was 2-of-3 at the plate with a double, single and drove in a run for DSU. Blanco and Whitesides each added two singles and a stolen base. Hermanson had a hit and an RBI. Andersen and Xi. Lopez each had a single.
- Olson tallied three singles and three stolen bases for VU. Schine added a double, single and two RBIs. Brown had a triple and single. Morgan James, Jacky Mathews and Ulaszek each recorded a hit.
- The V-Hawks registered 10 hits in the game compared to the Trojans nine hits. VU left eight runners on base, while the Trojans had five runners left on base.
- Xo. Lopez (L, 1-7) took the setback in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She worked for four-plus innings and allowed five runs (two unearned) on eight hits. Aldendifer tossed a shutout inning, while Xi. Lopez pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
- Xi. Lopez recorded four strikeouts for DSU, extending her single-season school record of 136 strikeouts (previously held Garst with 116 strikeouts in 2004).
- Bogdonovich (W, 3-13) earned a complete game victory for Viterbo. She gave up four runs (one unearned) on nine hits.
