DSU ends season in NSAA softball postseason tournament's loser out game

BELLEVUE, Neb. – Seventh-seeded Waldorf (Iowa) poured in 13 runs in five innings, ending fifth-seeded Dakota State's (S.D.) season in the North Star Athletic Association softball postseason tournament's loser out game at Lied Field Friday afternoon.  The Warriors eliminated the Trojans by the score of 13-2 in five innings.

DSU finished its season with an overall record of 19-34, the most wins since the 2018 season (21 victories).  WU improved to 10-32 overall record after the game and earned a 3-2 victory over fourth-seeded Mayville State (N.D.) in another loser's out contest Friday afternoon.  The Warriors will face top-seeded Valley City State (N.D.) for a spot to the championship game Saturday versus third-seeded Dickinson State (N.D.).

Waldorf (Iowa) 13, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/5 innings

  • The Warriors grabbed its first lead of the game in the top first.  Taylor Navratil hit a single with one out and swiped to second base.  Bree Hamblin hit an RBI single with two outs to score Navratil for 1-0 WU lead.
  • Waldorf continued its scoring surge in the top second frame after plating four runs.  Kassidy Elyea led off with a walk.  WU's lead grew to 2-0 as Kaela Eslinger drilled an RBI double to score Elyea.
  • Karina Prieto hit a single to advance Eslinger to third base.  Nichole Oberthien produced an RBI single to score Eslinger to make it 3-0 in favor of the Warriors. 
  • With two outs in the top second, the Warriors scored two more runs caused by DSU's defensive error to widen their lead to 5-0.
  • Dakota State was unable to score in the bottom half of the second inning, despite leaving runners on second and third bases.
  • Waldorf added a pair of runs in the top fourth inning.  Navratil hit a single with one out followed by Karlee Leyvas' walk.  Hamlin hit a 2-RBI double to score Navratil and Leyvas to balloon WU's lead to 7-0.
  • The Warriors racked up six runs in the top fifth inning, capped by an RBI double by Elyea to widen their lead to 13-0.
  • Melissa Krapf led off the bottom fifth with a single for the Trojans.  She swiped to second base.  Madissen Larson blasted a 2-run home run to trim their deficit to 13-2.  It was her first career collegiate home run at DSU.
  • Dakota State was unable to extend the game into the sixth inning as they left the bases full when the game ended, securing the win for Waldorf. 
  • Larson had a home run and drove in two runs to pace the Trojans' offense attack.  Elizabeth Whitesides, Julia Andersen, and Krapf each added a single.  Lia Chan had a walk.
  • Eslinger tallied two doubles and an RBI for the Warriors.  Hamblin added a double, two singles and drove in three runs.  Oberthien had two singles and three RBIs.  Navratil registered three singles, three stolen bases and an RBI.  Elyea had a double and an RBI.  Karina Prieto recorded two singles.
  • WU outhit DSU 13-5 in the game.  Both teams left six runners on base.
  • Rosie Philop (L, 2-3) took the setback in the pitching circle for Dakota State.  She worked for four innings and allowed seven runs (two unearned) on eight hits.  Madison Aldendifer also worked an inning in relief.
  • Alex Mathers (W, 6-15) tossed a complete game victory for Waldorf, yielding the Trojans to two runs on five hits.  She recorded three strikeouts.
  • It was the final career collegiate softball game for two Trojan seniors – Krapf and Xitlali Lopez (Thursday).
