VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Fifth-seeded Dickinson State (N.D.) jumped to an 8-0 lead after four innings over sixth-seeded Dakota State (S.D.) Saturday in the elimination game of the 2021 North Star Athletic Association Baseball Postseason Tournament, hosted by Valley City State (N.D.). The Trojans rallied back with six-run explosion in the bottom sixth, but the Blue Hawks escaped with a 14-6 victory.
The Trojans ended its 2021 season with an overall record of 20-25, matching its most wins since the 2016 season (20-27 overall record). The Blue Hawks move on to Sunday for another loser's out contest, awaiting its opponent after the conclusion of Saturday's other games.
Dickinson State (N.D.) 14, Dakota State (S.D.) 6 – FINAL
- Dickinson State jumped to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, thanks to back-to-back doubles by Cade Ostenson and Robert Encinas. Encinas produced an RBI to score Ostenson.
- The Blue Hawks plated three runs in the top third frame to extend their lead to 4-0.
- DiSU added four more runs in the top fourth inning. Angel Faras and Connor Polkowske hit back-to-back singles, followed by Kobe Krenz's walk to set up a bases loaded situation. Derrick Calvillo hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Faras to make it 5-0 in favor of Dickinson State (Krenz was forced out at second base).
- Dickinson State made it 8-0 as Ostenson smashed a 3-run home run with one out in the top fourth frame.
- The Trojans snapped its scoring drought by piling up six runs on seven hits in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Chris Burke led off with a walk. Jace Pribyl drilled an RBI double to score Burke as DaSU trailed 8-1.
Dakota State continued its offense surge as Samuel Drummond hit an RBI single to score Pribyl to cut DiSU's lead to 8-2. Josh Van Beek added a single to advance Drummond to second base.- Walker Hultgren blasted a 2-RBI triple to score Drummond and Van Beek as the Trojans trimmed their deficit to 8-4 in the bottom sixth.
- Jackson O'Neal followed up with an RBI single to score Hultgren as the Trojans reduce Dickinson State's lead to 8-5 in the bottom sixth inning.
- Burke added an RBI double to score O'Neal as Dakota State trailed 8-6. DaSU could not continue its scoring surge as they left two runners on base when sixth inning ended.
- Dickinson State answered with five runs in the top seventh inning to balloon their lead to 13-6.
- Brett Bantle added an RBI sacrifice fly in the top ninth frame as Blue Hawks' lead grew to 14-6, securing the victory.
- Hultgren had had triple, single and drove in two runs for the Trojans. Burke added a double, single, and an RBI. Drummond and O'Neal each tallied two singles and an RBI. Pribyl had a double and an RBI. Mason Macaluso had two singles and a walk. Van Beek recoded a single.
Ostenson fueled the Blue Hawks' offense with a home run, double, and collected four RBIs. Encinas added a double, two singles, and an RBI. Calvillo and Kael Richards each had a hit and an RBI. Faras had three hits and an RBI. Polkowske added three hits.- Both teams had 14 hits in the game. DaSU committed four defensive errors, while DiSU did not commit a defensive error.
- Kahlil Tibury (L, 2-4) recorded the defeat after tossing three-plus innings for Dakota State, giving up six runs (one unearned) on six hits. JD Kirchner worked for 3 2/3 innings in relief. David Kirby pitched the final 2 1/3 innings in relief and struck out three DiSU's batters.
- Joel Torres (W, 4-2) earned the victory on the pitching mound for Dickinson State. He pitched five scoreless innings and gave up five hits. He recorded four strikeouts. Tyler Gray worked for two outs in the bottom sixth inning, allowing six runs on six hits. Nathan Delahanty tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief as John Koronka closed the game in the ninth inning.
- Fabian Boria, Micah DeHarty, Drummond, Esai Hernandez, Kevin Krumm, Chris Kropuenske, Trey Randel, and Jacob Yaeger finished their collegiate baseball career at Dakota State University.
