MADISON, S.D. – Despite trailing 16-7 in the early fourth quarter, Dakota State (S.D.) stormed back by scoring 13 points in the final 11:06 of the game for a 20-16 North Star Athletic Association football victory over Mayville State (N.D.) Saturday at Trojan Field. It was the first homecoming victory for the Trojans since the 2019 season.
Dakota State won their second straight game, concluding their season-high three-game home stand. The Trojans raised their overall record to 3-1, the first time since 2017 season that DSU started the season with a 3-1 record. Dakota State remained in a two-way tie for first place in the NSAA football standings with 2-0 record (No. 20-ranked Valley City State, N.D. defeated Iowa Wesleyan 28-14 Saturday).
Mayville State fell to 0-5 overall record and 0-2 NSAA conference record. Dakota State defeated the Comets for the seventh straight meeting, lifting their all-time series record to 20-14.

FIRST QUARTER
- Mayville State was forced to punt on the opening drive. Dakota State began their drive on their own 40-yard line with 12 minutes, 36 seconds on the clock and used 11 plays for 39 yards before committing a turnover in the end zone.
- MSU's Danzele Navy intercepted DSU's Zach Brooks pass in the end zone with 7:21 to go in the first quarter.
- The Comets answered with 12 plays for 65 yards in 6:14 for the first scoring drive of the game. MSU had to settled for a 32-yard field goal with 1:07 left to gain a 3-0 lead over DSU.
SECOND QUARTER
Dakota State was forced to punt to start the second quarter. Caleb Nielsen hit a 65-yard punt from their own 17-yard line to MSU 18-yard line with 14:43 on the clock.- The Trojans started a drive on their own 20-yard line with 9:34 on the clock and marched down the field to MSU's 11-yard line. Dakota State could not tie the game after Nielsen missed a 28-yard field goal with 2:21 to go in the first half.
- Mayville State answered on the ensuing possession with a touchdown. Tim Salmon threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Maalik Flowers with two seconds left before halftime.
- The Comets failed to convert their 2-point PAT extra-point opportunity as they led 9-0 by intermission.
- MSU outgained DSU 129-44 in total offensive yards in the first half.
THIRD QUARTER
Brooks opened the third quarter with a 57-yard rush from DSU's 35-yard line to MSU's 8-yard line.- The Trojans ended their scoring drought with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Cole Sylliaasen to Travis Rebstock with 14:16 on the clock.
- Nielsen added the PAT extra-point kick as DSU trimmed MSU's lead to 9-7.
- Dakota State committed a turnover from Mayville State's punt. Austin Urlaub recovered the ball on DSU's 18-yard line with 12:49 on the clock, as the Comets continued their ensuing drive.
- Comet Xander Coleman missed a 38-yard field goal with 11:19 to go in the third quarter as the Trojans regained possession.
- MSU's Navy caught his second interception of the game on DSU's 45-yard line and returned it for 15 yards to DSU's 30-yard line with 11:06 on the clock.
- The Comets were unable to convert a 40-yard field goal by Kaden Johnson with 9:26 to go in the third quarter.
- Mayville State led 9-7 by the end of the third quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
Facing fourth-and-10 situation on DSU's 29-yard line, Salmon connected to Reece Smith for a 29-yard touchdown pass with 12:29 remaining. Coleman added the PAT extra-point kick to put Mayville State up 16-7. - The Comets used 10 plays for 69 yards in 4:11 in the scoring drive.
- Jack Anderson returned a kick-off of 51 yards as Dakota State started their next drive on MSU's 37-yard line.
- Brooks threw a 24-yard pass to Dajshon Keel to MSU's 13-yard line. After a 2-yard rush by Brenner Furlong, Brooks connected to Keel for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 11:06 left in the game.
- Nielsen's PAT extra-point kick was no good as Dakota State trailed 16-13.
- Mayville State committed a turnover on the ensuing possession. DSU's Jay Skogerboe intercepted Salmon's pass on DSU's 26-yard line and returned it for 25 yards to MSU's 49-yard line with 7:23 left.
- After the play was over, the Trojans' drive started on MSU's 34-yard line after a penalty committed by the Comets.
- Furlong rushed four straight times and converted a first down on MSU's 24-yard line. After a 3-yard rush by Furlong, Brooks threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Michael Hybertson with 5:20 remaining.
- The Trojans extended their lead to 20-16 after a successful PAT extra-point kick by Nielsen.
- Mayville State turned the ball on downs on the next possession, thanks to a quarterback sack by Braedon Wallenstein and Edward Fritzler with 3:41 left on MSU's 30-yard line.
- Facing a fourth-and-one situation on MSU's 21-yard line with 2:01 left, the Trojans was able to extend their drive after a 6-yard rush by Brooks to MSU's 15-yard line.
- Dakota State secured the victory after using up the final 3:41 of the game (MSU ran out of timeouts).
- DSU outscored MSU 13-7 in the fourth quarter and 20-7 in the second half.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brooks finished the game by completing eight passes in 14 attempts for 114 yards and threw two touchdowns for Dakota State. He also had two interceptions. Sylliaasen added a touchdown pass.
- Brooks rushed nine times for 95 yards and averaged 10.6 yards per rush. Furlong added 18 rushes for 71 yards.
- Keel caught five passes for 55 yards and a touchdown for DSU. Hybertson added two receptions for 28 yards and a touchdown. Furlong had a 17-yard reception, while Cooper McDermott added a 14-yard reception. Rebstock caught a touchdown pass.
- Nielsen had three punts for 121 yards, averaging 40.3 yards per punt for the Trojans. He also had four kick-offs for 252 yards (63.0 yards per kickoff) and registered two touchbacks.
- Skogerboe, Marcus Vanden Bosch, and Mahdi Benalshaikh each led Dakota State's defense with seven tackles each. Skogerboe had an interception and returned it for 25 yards.
- Wallenstein and Cody Brown each were credited for a quarterback sack. Vanden Bosch and Fritzler each recorded a half sack. Jason Sakamoto registered three pass break-ups.
- Salmon went 18-of-35 for 193 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Mayville State. He also ran eight times for 31 yards. Cole Dukart had seven rushes for 38 yards. Mason Ollman added six rushes for 29 yards. Jason Nelson had nine rushes for 20 yards.
- Javeion Davison caught seven passes for 66 yards for MSU. Flowers added five receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown. Smith had a 29-yard touchdown reception.
- Justice Sosnicki and CJ Paleafei each led the Comets with eight tackles. Bailey Mullenberg had a quarterback sack. Navy caught two interceptions and tallied five tackles.
TEAM COMPARISONS
- Mayville State had a slight edge over Dakota State in total offensive yards (319-303). The Comets recorded 193 passing yards compared to the Trojans 122 passing yards.
- DSU rushed for a season-high 181 yards. MSU had 126 rushing yards.
- Dakota State tallied 18 first downs, while Mayville State had 16 first downs.
- The Comets converted 6-of-17 on third down situations (35 percent) compared to Trojans 3-of-9 third downs (33 percent).
- Dakota State recorded three quarterback sacks in the game. Mayville State had one quarterback sack.
- The Comets had the ball control for 38 minutes, 23 seconds. DSU had a time possession of 21 minutes, 37 seconds.
DSU SENIOR DAY/BOOT HILL BOWL CHAMPION REUNION
- Dakota State honored its ten seniors prior to kick-off Saturday. They are Nico Feroni, Edward Fritzler, Brenner Furlong, Alexander Maxey, Caleb Nielsen, Jason Sakamoto, Conner Tordsen, Marcus Vanden Bosch, and Braedon Wallenstein. Student assistant coach Cameron Belden was also honored.
- The DSU Athletics department also honored its 1971 Boot Hill Bowl Championship team, guided by former head coach Lee Moran, during halftime for their 50th anniversary of winning the game. The Trojans were the first South Dakota college football team ever to win a postseason game, rallying back to defeat a full scholarship team of Northwestern Oklahoma State on an icy and snowed covered game on Dec. 4, 1971.
UP NEXT
Dakota State begins their two-game road trip next Saturday, making their first stop at Bolstorff Field. The Trojans take on Waldorf (Iowa) in the North Star Athletic Association match-up. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
Mayville State stays on the road as they visit No. 20-ranked Valley City State (N.D.) in the NSAA action. The game is set for 2 p.m. at Lokken Field in Valley City, N.D.
