MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State was red-hot hitting Saturday evening, registering a season-high .356 after rolling to a 3-0 North Star Athletic Association volleyball contest over Mayville State (N.D.) at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. Set scores were 25-14, 25-18, and 25-8. Saturday's match concluded their 12-match stretch away from DSU Fieldhouse.
Dakota State continues its best start during head coach Amy Veenhof's coaching era, lifting their overall record to 9-3 after their third straight victory. The Trojans also improved to 2-1 record in NSAA matches. Mayville State dropped their second straight match, falling to 11-6 overall record and 1-2 NSAA conference record.
DSU plays its first home matches next weekend as they continue their North Star Athletic Association action. The Trojans host Dickinson State (N.D.) next Saturday (Oct. 2) with the first serve at 12 p.m., followed by another contest with Valley City State (N.D.) on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. Both matches will be at DSU Fieldhouse.
Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Mayville State (N.D.) 0 – FINAL (25-14, 25-18, 25-8)
- Mayville State grabbed the first lead in the opening set after a kill by Ashley Pyburn. Dakota State answered by scoring the next six points to earn a 6-1 lead, forcing the Comets to call its first timeout.
- Sydney Schell and Riley Grandpre each had a kill during DSU's 6-0 scoring surge.
- Madalyn Groft hit a service ace as the Trojans widen their lead to 16-7 in the first set.
- At 20-14, Dakota State scored the final five points to secure a 1-0 match lead after a 25-14 victory capped by a kill by M. Groft.
- The Trojans hit .255 in the first set (16 kills with 4 errors in 47 attempts) and held the Comets to .083 hitting percentage (10 kills with 6 errors in 48 swings).
- Dakota State and Mayville State went through a see-saw battle through the first 30 rallies before the Trojans pulled away late.
- Trailing 13-10, the Trojan went on a monstrous 8-2 scoring run to earn an 18-15 lead after Hannah Viet's block.
- Dakota State held Mayville State to three points for the rest of the second set, finishing with a 15-5 scoring run for a 25-18 victory. DSU extended its match lead to 2-0.
- The Trojans hit an impressive .351 in the second set (16 kills with 3 errors in 37 swings). The Comets hit .154 (13 kills with 7 errors in 39 attempts).
- DSU opened the third set with a 3-0 lead, thanks to kill by Grandpre and Maddie Polzin followed by a service ace by Schell.
- The Comets then went on a 3-0 run to knot at 3-3 with back-to-back kills by Pyburn and a kill by Lily Pyle.
- Dakota State roared with a 22-5 scoring surge to close the match for a dominant 25-8 set three victory. The Trojans earned kills by Viet, Schell, M. Groft, and Polzin, as well as service ace by Polzin, and Jenna Frank during DSU's strong closing run.
- DSU did not commit an attack error in the third set, hitting an amazing .500 with 17 kills in 34 swings. MSU was held to .147 hitting percentage (8 kills with 3 errors in 34 attempts).
- Three Trojan hitters hit double digits in kills, paced by Schell with 12 kills. She hit .281 in the match. She posted a double-double with 13 digs. Polzin added 11 kills and hit .400. She also had nine digs and tallied a match-high five service aces.
- M. Groft produced a double-double of 23 set assists and smashed 10 kills (.455 hitting percentage) for Dakota State. She had seven digs. Grandpre had eight kills (.400 hitting percentage), while Viet had eight kills and hit .600.
- Nicole Sarringar contributed 20 set assists and seven digs for DSU. VonnaGail Schlechter tallied 15 digs.
- Peyton Groft led the Trojans' defense with 18 digs. Viet collected four blocks. Polzin, Schell, and Vanessa Schroeder each registered two blocks.
- Pyle had 11 kills and hit .333 in the match for Mayville State. Elora Passa had a double-double of 18 set assists and 10 kills. She had seven digs.
- Rachel Hill recorded 10 set assists. Natalie Hadrava led MSU's defense with 20 digs. Jordyn Lucas had 17 digs.
- Dakota State outhit Mayville State 49-31 in the match. The Trojans only committed seven attack errors in 118 swings. The Comets hit .124 with 16 attack errors in 121 swings.
- The Trojans tallied nine service aces. DSU had seven blocks compared to MSU two blocks. Dakota State collected 74 digs, while Mayville State had 61 digs.
