DSU rallies back for 3-2 thriller over previously undefeated Hastings (Neb.)

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) debuted its 2021 volleyball season with a comeback fashion victory over Great Plains Athletic Conference's foe Hastings (Neb.) Friday at United Sports Academy on the first day of Labor Day Classic (hosted by College of Saint Mary, Neb.).  Despite a slow start trailing 2-0, the Trojans stormed back to win the next three sets to earn a 3-2 thriller over the Broncos.

Set scores were 15-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-17, and 15-12.  Dakota State handed Hastings its first setback of the season after winning the first nine matches of the season. 

The Trojans wrap up the first day versus Lincoln (Ill.) at 3 p.m.

Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Hastings (Neb.) 2 – FINAL (15-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-17, 15-12)

  • Hastings raced to a 5-1 early lead and never trailed in the opening set.  A service ace by Kamri Adler gave the Broncos its biggest lead of the set at 20-8.
  • HC grabbed a 1-0 match lead after a kill by Makenna Ashner for a 25-14 win.
  • The Trojans opened with 4-1 lead in the second set, thanks to four errors committed by the Broncos.  Hastings answered back with six straight points to overtake a 7-4 lead after an error by DSU.
  • DSU's Hannah Viet smashed a kill to knot the second set 9-9.  Hastings went on a 10-3 scoring tear to take a 19-12 lead.
  • The Broncos extended their match lead to 2-0 after a 25-18 set two victory.
  • Hastings used a quick start in the third set, thanks to back-to-back service aces by Jaisee Stinson for a 3-0 lead. 
  • Trailing 21-16, Dakota State roared back to extend the match into the fourth set after closing the third set with a monstrous 9-2 scoring run.  During the scoring run, the Trojans recorded blocks by Vanessa Schroeder, Madalyn Groft, Riley Grandpre, and Sydney Schell
  • Amani Monroe committed an attack error to give Dakota State's the third set at 25-23.
  • DSU committed 24 attack errors in the first three sets compared to 16 attack errors by Hastings.
  • The Trojans opened with an 8-3 lead in the fourth set after a kill by Grandpre.  The Broncos could get no closer than two points at 8-6.
  • Dakota State widen their lead to 23-13 after a kill by M. Groft.  Hastings committed a pair of errors to give Trojans a 25-17 set four victory, evening the match at 2-2 and forcing the deciding fifth set.
  • DSU outhit HC 13-10 in the fourth set.  The Trojans hit .263 compared to the Broncos .019 hitting percentage.
  • Both DSU and HC went through a see-saw battle in the fifth set with four ties through the first 18 rallies (9-9 tie).
  • A pair of attack errors by HC's Grace Branson followed by an attack by Brooklyn Grage sparked DSU's 3-0 run to grab a 12-9 lead.
  • Hastings trimmed Dakota State's lead to 13-12 in the fifth set.  The Trojans set a match point after Grandpre's kill for a 14-12 lead.
  • Hastings committed an attack error to give DSU a 15-12 set five victory.
  • DSU hit an impressive .318 in the final set (9 kills with 2 errors in 22 attempts) and held HC to .154 hitting percentage (9 kills with 5 errors in 26 swings).
  • The Trojans committed just five attack errors combined in the fourth and fifth sets.  The Broncos totaled 15 attack errors in the final two sets.
  • M. Groft produced a double-double of 28 set assists and collected 17 digs for Dakota State.  Viet smashed 14 kills and registered an astounding .500 hitting efficiency.  She also had three blocks.
  • Grandpre smashed 12 kills for DSU.  She had three blocks.  Schell had nine kills and tallied 21 digs.  Schell and Schroeder each recorded four blocks.
  • Peyton Groft had 21 digs for the Trojans.  Savannah Mares and P. Groft each added a service ace.
  • Sydney Mullin led the Broncos with 13 kills and hit .444 in the match.  Monroe added nine kills and four blocks.  Makenna Asher posted a double-double of 28 set assists and 16 digs.  Stinson added a double-double of 12 assists and 11 digs.
  • Ava Lovitt led HC's defense with 21 digs.  Kamri Adler added 11 digs. 
  • Dakota State recorded a hitting percentage of .101 in the match (46 kills with 29 errors in 169 swings).  Hastings hit .093 (48 kills with 31 errors in 183 attempts). 
  • The Broncos had 12 service aces and 12 serving errors.  The Trojans registered three aces and seven service errors.
