NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to pull off an upset bid over NAIA nationally ranked Park (Mo.) in the final match of the Labor Day Classic Saturday. The tournament was held at the United Sports Academy, hosted by College of Saint Mary (Neb.).
The Pirates held off the Trojans by the scores of 25-13, 25-21, 22-25, and 25-20. Park, who is currently No. 4 ranked in the latest NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, had been to the NAIA National Tournament for the past eight seasons.
Park improved to 4-2 overall record. Dakota State finished its challenging preseason tournament with a 2-2 record.
The Trojans play their final preseason tune-up next weekend as they travel to Peru, Neb. to take on Peru State Bobcat Classic. DSU plays Mount Marty (S.D.) and Bethel (Kan.) on Friday, followed by a pair of matches versus York (Neb.) and host-team Peru State (Neb.).
(4) Park (Mo.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL (25-13, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20)
- Park rolled to a 5-0 lead in the opening set and extended their lead to 9-1 caped by a service ace by Nada Meawad.
- The Pirates never trailed in the first set, cruising to a 25-13 victory and 1-0 match lead. PU outhit DSU 14-6 in the set.
- Park used another fast start in the second set, reeling off four straight points for a 4-0 lead. Meawad smashed back-to-back kills to widen their lead to 8-1, forcing the Trojans to call a timeout.
- Trailing 16-10, Dakota State stormed back with an 8-4 run to cut Park's lead to 20-18. Sydney Schell smashed a kill as the Trojans trailed 23-21.
- The Pirates closed the second set with a kill by Debora Bernardi and a service ace by Meawad for a 25-21 victory. PU extended its match lead to 2-0.
- Park tallied 18 kills in the second set with a hitting percentage of .260 (5 errors in 50 swings). Dakota State had 12 kills with a hitting efficiency of .214 (3 errors in 42 attempts).
- The Pirates raced to a 4-0 lead in the third set and extended to 8-1 lead, thanks to four kills by Meawad.
- DSU answered with an 7-2 run to trim PU's lead to 12-10. The Trojans recorded a kill by Sydney Schell (2 kills), Riley Grandpre, Hannah Viet, and Brooklyn Grage during the scoring run.
- Down 16-11, Dakota State roared back with an 8-0 outburst to grab a 19-16 lead capped by Grandpre's kill.
- Knotted at 21-21, Grandpre smashed a kill followed by a service ace by Madalyn Groft and an attack error by Park gave DSU its set point opportunity at 24-21.
- Amanda Mendes recorded a kill as Park trailed 24-22. Viet closed the third set with a kill as the Trojans extended the match into the fourth set after a 25-22 win.
- DSU hit .152 (13 kills with 6 errors in 46 swings) in the third set and held PU to .078 hitting percentage (14 kills with 10 errors in 51 attempts).
- The Pirates started the fourth set with a pair of errors followed by a kill by Schell to give Dakota State a 3-0 quick lead in the fourth set.
- The Trojans continued its scoring surge, widening their lead to 10-1 (Schell had three kills during the scoring run, while the Pirates committed thee attack errors).
- Schell smashed a kill to give Dakota State a 16-8 lead before Park mounted a furious comeback. Trailing 20-17, the Pirates closed the fourth set with eight straight points to grab a 25-20 set four victory and a 3-1 match win.
- Park tallied 17 kills in the fourth set compared to Dakota State 16 kills. PU recorded a hitting percentage of .208 (6 errors in 53 swings), while DSU hit better with a hitting efficiency of .214 (4 errors in 56 attempts).
- Schell smashed a season-high 19 kills for the Trojans. She hit .333 in the match and produced a double-double with 13 digs. Madalyn Groft, Grandpre, and Viet each added seven kills.
- M. Groft posted a double-double of 21 set assists and collected 16 digs for DSU. Nicole Sarringar added a double-double of 18 assists and 14 digs.
- Peyton Groft led Dakota State's defense with 27 digs. VonnaGail Schlechter added 15 digs. Grandpre and Viet each had three block assists. Taryn Tacheny and Schell each recorded two block assists.
- Nada Meawad led Park with a double-double of 22 kills and 15 digs. Noura Meawad added 14 kills and 15 digs. Vera Beltrame produced a double-double of 53 set assists and 14 digs.
- Kasia Penyock had 20 digs for the Pirates. Mafalda Bras had 12 digs.
- The Pirates hit .180 in the match (63 kills with 28 errors in 194 swings) compared to the Trojans .165 hitting efficiency (47 kills with 18 errors in 176 attempts).
- Park collected 102 digs, while Dakota State had 89 digs. The Trojans registered seven blocks compared to the Pirates five blocks.
