No. 17 Trojans hit century mark in 103-56 road victory over Blue Hawks

DICKINSON, N.D. – No. 17 Dakota State (S.D.) surpassed the century mark on the road Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 103-56 North Star Athletic Association women's basketball victory over host-team Dickinson State (N.D.) at Scott Gymnasium.  The Trojans shot 50.7 percent overall from the field and drained 13-of-26 3-pointers.

Dakota State lifted their overall record to 13-6 and stay undefeated in North Star conference play with a 3-0 record.  Dickinson State fell to 3-17 overall record and 1-2 NSAA conference record.

DaSU had won 10 straight meetings with DiSU.  The Trojans recorded their 17th straight North Star Athletic Association regular-season league contest, dating back to last season.

The Trojans return home next weekend to kick off their four-game NSAA home stand at DSU Fieldhouse.  DaSU begins its home stand versus Mayville State (N.D.) Friday evening at 5:30 p.m.

(17) Dakota State (S.D.) 103, Dickinson State (N.D.) 56 – FINAL

  • Dakota State grabbed its first lead of the game at 2-0 after a basket by Jessi Giles with nine minutes, forty-nine seconds on the clock.
  • The Blue Hawks answered with four straight points from two different scorers (Courtney Olson and McKenzie Johnson) to earn their first lead at 4-2 with 8:57 left in the first.
  • Three DaSU players scored to spark a 10-0 outburst, thanks to a 3-pointer each by Lexi Robson and Shaylee DeBeerSavannah Walsdorf hit a basket with 7:25 on the clock to cap the Trojans' run to balloon their lead to 12-4.
  • The Blue Hawks could get no closer than three points at 12-9 after Olson's basket with 6:10 remaining in the first period.
  • The Trojans closed the first quarter with a 20-6 monstrous scoring run, ending the quarter with a basket by Robson for a 32-15 lead. 
  • Dakota State was 12-of-21 field goals (57.1 percent) in the first ten minutes, including hitting 6-of-8 from the 3-point arc.  Dickinson State was 6-of-13 field goals (46.1 percent) and 1-of-4 from the 3-point line.
  • DaSU led as many as 20 points in the second quarter on two different occasions.  Cheylee Nagel competed a 3-point play to put Trojan sup at 39-19 with 7:02 on the clock.
  • Nagel also drained a 3-pointer with 3:50 left before halftime to give Dakota State a 42-22 lead.
  • The Trojans led 48-32 by halftime.
  • Dakota State outscored Dickinson State 30-8 in the third period, ballooning their lead to 78-40. 
  • The Trojans shot 9-of-21 from the field (42.9 percent) in the first ten minutes of the second half and held the Blue Hawks to 1-of-13 field goals (7.7 percent).
  • Dakota State scored 25 points in the fourth quarter compared to Dickinson State 16 points.
  • Five DaSU players scored in double-digits, paced by Jessi Giles with 17 points.  Robson added 16 points, stole the ball five times, and dished out four assists. 
  • Walsdorf produced a double-double of 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Trojans.  She also contributed six assists and four steals.  Elsie Aslesen had 13 points, four rebounds, and two blocks.
  • Nagel tallied 10 points off the bench for Dakota State.  DeBeer added eight points and three steals.  Ashlyn Macdonald had six points and seven rebounds.
  • Morgan Huber had six points for the Trojans.  Lilli Mackley and McKenzie Hermanson each added five points.
  • Olson led the Blue Hawks with 12 points and six rebounds.  She had four assists.  Kailyn Groves added 11 points and three assists.  Lilly Kelley scored 10 points.
  • Johnson had six points and pulled down five rebounds for DiSU. 
  • Dakota State was 38-of-75 from the field overall and held Dickinson State to 30.2 percent overall (19-of-63 field goals).  DiSU was 6-of-20 from the 3-point arc.
  • DaSU converted 14-of-21 from the free-throw line, while DiSU was 12-of-18 free-throws (66.7 percent).
  • Dakota State outrebounded Dickinson State 49-38. 
  • The Trojans stole the ball 20 times compared to the Blue Hawks seven steals.
  • DaSU outscored DiSU 42-14 in bench points and 33-7 in points off turnovers.
