MADISON, S.D. – Briar Cliff (Iowa) – preseason ranked No. 24 in the NAIA Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll and 2022 NAIA national tournament qualifier after winning the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular-season title – shot a blazing 68 percent from the field in the final twenty minutes, pulling away past Dakota State (S.D.) 76-65 in the men's basketball season opening game on the first day of two-day tournament Friday evening at DSU Fieldhouse. After holding a slim 32-31 halftime lead, the Chargers outscored the Trojans 44-34 in the second half.
Midland (Neb.) held off Presentation's (S.D.) furious second half comeback for an 85-79 in the first game of the tournament Friday.
The tournament continues Saturday evening with Briar Cliff facing Presentation at 5 p.m. followed by Dakota State hosting Midland at 7 p.m.
(24) Briar Cliff (Iowa) 76, Dakota State (S.D.) 65 – FINAL
- The first twenty minutes of the game saw four ties and lead changes with no lead greater than six points.
- Chris Morales scored the first six points of the game, giving the Trojans a 6-2 lead with 17:41 on the clock in the first half.
- Ben Hoverson drained a 3-pointer (assisted by Morales) extended DSU's lead to 13-7 with 14:09 to go in the first half.
- Briar Cliff regained their lead at 17-15 after a 10-2 scoring run, capped by Kyle Boerhave's basket (assisted by Quinn Vesey) with 11:15 to go before halftime.
- Ronnie Latting completed a 3-point play as Dakota State regained its six-point lead at 27-21 with less than five minutes to go in the first half.
The Chargers scored 11 straight points – with six points from Matthew Stilwill – to earn a 32-27 lead with 1:17 to go in the first.- Dakota State closed the first half with four straight points, three points from Deshawn Kelly, to trim BCU's lead to 32-31 by halftime.
- The Trojans shot a sizzling 64.7 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes (11-of-17 field goals) and held the Chargers to 40.6 percent (13-of-32 field goals).
- Briar Cliff outscored Dakota State 8-0 on second chance points on their nine offensive rebounds in the first half.
- Boerhave capped with five points during BCU's second half 6-0 scoring run, ballooning their lead to 38-31 with less than 18 minutes to go in the game.
- The Trojans answered with a 3-pointer by Kelly and a lay-up by Latting to cut their deficit to 38-36 with 16:39 left.
- BCU maintained their lead between three- and eight-points for the next nine minutes.
- At 52-47, the Chargers scored eight straight points to earn their first double-digit lead of the game. Nick Hoyt hit a 3-pointer to extend their lead to 60-47 with 7:43 left.
Trailing 65-52, Dakota State made three straight baskets from three different scorers – Morales, Manny N'tula, and Latting – and could get no closer than seven points at 65-58 with 3:55 remaining.- Briar Cliff registered the biggest lead at 76-61 with less than a minute to go in the game.
- BCU shot 17-of-25 from the field in the final twenty minutes of the game compared to DSU 14-of-36 field goals (38.9 percent).
- Morales led the Trojans with 11 points. Kelly and T'tula each added 10 points. T'tula stole the ball twice. Latting had nine points and pulled down seven rebounds. Sam Muller scored nine points and collected five rebounds. Hoverson had six points and dished out four assists.
- Latting and Ethan Damerum each recorded a blocked shot for Dakota State.
- Boerhave poured in 23 points on his 11-of-14 field goals for Briar Cliff. He posted a double-double with 11 rebounds. Stilwill scored 14 points off the bench. Conner Groves had 10 points.
- Vesey had eight points, seven assists, four rebounds, and four steals for the Chargers. Jaden Kleinhesselink had nine points and seven assists.
Briar Cliff shot 52.6 percent overall from the field (30-of-57 field goals) compared to Dakota State 47.2 percent (25-of-53 field goals). BCU was 7-of-20 3-pointers while DSU was 5-of-19 from the 3-point arc.- The Trojans outrebounded the Chargers 33-31.
- Briar Cliff outscored Dakota State 31-20 in points off turnovers and 46-32 inside the paint.
