DSU ends volleyball road schedule with 3-0 NSAA sweep over Saints

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) bounced back in the winning column after outhitting Presentation (S.D.) 43-25 Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 North Star Athletic Association volleyball contest at Strode Center.  The victory also gave the Trojans its 24th win in the last 26 meetings with the Saints.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 16-15.  The Trojans moved in a tie for third place in the North Star Athletic Association standings with a 6-6 record (Mayville State, N.D.).  Presentation fell to 8-20 overall record and 5-7 NSAA conference record (fifth place in the NSAA conference standings).

Dakota State won the junior varsity match with a 3-0 sweep over Presentation, wrapping up their 2022 season with four straight victories.  The Trojans' junior varsity squad also competed a perfect 4-0 record in North Star conference play.

The Trojans conclude their regular-season schedule as they return home at DSU Fieldhouse next weekend.  DSU wraps up their North Star conference schedule, starting Friday versus the conference's leader No. 7 ranked Viterbo (Wis.).  First serve is set for 6 p.m.  DSU hosts Waldorf (Iowa) next Saturday at 3 p.m. in the regular-season finale. 

DSU volleyball is hosting its alumni weekend next weekend, where alumni are invited to play in a scrimmage late Saturday morning at DSU Fieldhouse.

Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Presentation (S.D.) 0 – FINAL (25-20, 25-12, 25-19)

  • Presentation opened the match with a 7-4 lead in the first set after Maggie Heesch's kill.
  • Dakota State went on a 7-1 scoring run to overtake an 11-8 lead after an attack error by the Saints.
  • Tied at 12-12, Dakota State stretched its lead to 16-12 after a 4-0 scoring run capped by Sydney Schell's kill.
  • The Saints could get no closer than one point twice at 18-17 and 19-18.  The Trojans closed the first set with a 6-2 run, closing with a block assist by Madalyn Groft and Hannah Viet.
  • Dakota State outhit Presentation 14-11 in the first set.  The Trojans hit .136 (8 attack errors in 44 swings) and held the Saints to .093 hitting efficiency (7 errors in 43 attempts).
  • DSU raced to a 6-1 lead, highlighted by back-to-back kills by Schell (assisted by Maddi Langerock) to kick off the second set.
  • Holding a 14-10 lead, Dakota State roared with a 9-0 monstrous run to balloon their lead to 23-10 after another back-to-back kills from Schell.
  • Dakota State extended their match lead to 2-0 after a dominating 25-12 victory.  The Trojans smashed 13 kills compared to the Saints four kills.
  • DSU hit .186 in the second set (5 error sin 43 swings) and limited PC to a negative .174 hitting percent, committing 12 attack errors in 46 attempts.
  • Trailing 4-2 in the third set, Dakota State went on a 6-0 scoring tear to earn an 8-4 lead after Schell's kill.
  • Dakota State never trailed for the rest of the third set, despite Presentation trimming their deficit to 16-15 after a service ace from Cassidy Keller.
  • Schell smashed a pair of kills to extend DSU's lead to 19-15. 
  • Dakota State closed the match by scoring the final three points for a 25-19 victory, securing a 3-0 match victory.
  • DSU smashed 16 kills in the third set (.217 hitting percentage) compared to PC 10 kills (.058 hitting percentage).
  • Schell paced the Trojans' offense attack with 17 kills.  She added a double-double with 15 digs.  Viet tallied nine kills and five blocks.  Brooklyn Grage registered nine kills, seven digs, and three blocks.  Vanessa Schroeder had four kills and two blocks.
  • Langerock produced a double-double of 20 set assists and 19 digs for Dakota State.  M. Groft added 12 set assists and 11 digs. 
  • Peyton Groft tallied 11 digs for DSU.  VonnaGail Schlechter added six digs. 
  • Grace Tobin recorded eight kills and eight digs for Presentation.  Kerstin Knopik added six kills and two blocks.  Olivia Corey posted a double-double of 10 set assists and 11 digs.  Sydney Miller had a double-double of 10 set assists and 10 digs.
  • Dakota State hit .180 in the match (19 errors in 133 attempts) and held Presentation to minus .007 hitting percentage (26 attack errors in 141 swings). 
  • DSU had nine blocks compared to PC six blocks.
