La CROSSE, Wis. – Dakota State (S.D.) battled with the North Star Athletic Association's volleyball co-leader No. 8 ranked Viterbo (Wis.) Thursday evening at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium. The Trojans dropped a hard-fought match with the V-Hawks, falling short in five sets. Set scores were 22-25, 25-14, 25-20, 15-20, and 15-5.
DSU, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, is 12-12 overall record and 2-4 NSAA conference record. Viterbo won their third straight match to lift their overall record to 16-6 and 6-0 record in league play.
Dakota State concludes their six-match road trip and ends their first half portion of the conference schedule at Waldorf (Iowa). First serve is set for 6 p.m. at Hanson Field house in Forest City, Iowa. VU stays home as they welcome No. 14 ranked Bellevue (Neb.) in the battle of top two teams in the North Star conference.
(8) Viterbo (Wis.) 3, (RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL (22-25, 25-14, 25-20, 15-25, 15-5)
- Dakota State and Viterbo battled through a closely tight first set with eight ties and three lead changes. At 15-15, Hannah Viet and Sydney Schell recorded back-to-back kills followed by a block from Vanessa Schroeder and Maddi Langerock to ignite DSU's 4-0 scoring run for 19-15 lead.
- The V-Hawks were forced to burn both of their timeout during Trojans' scoring run. Trailing 21-17, the V-Hawks rallied back within one point at 21-20, 22-21, and 23-22.
- Brooklyn Grage smashed a kill, while Madalyn Groft closed out the first set with a service ace to give DSU a 25-22 victory and 1-0 match lead.
- Dakota State hit .132 in the opening set (13 kills with 8 errors in 38 swings) compared to Viterbo .108 hitting percentage (12 kills with 8 errors in 37 attempts).
- The Trojans opened the second set with a 4-2 lead capped by a block by M. Groft and Viet.
- Viterbo went on a 6-0 scoring surge to regain an 8-4 lead after Marisaa Kleman's kill.
- The V-Hawks evened the match at 1-1 after cruising to a 25-14 victory. The Trojans were held to minus .067 hitting percentage (5 kills with 8 errors in 45 attempts). VU hit .159 in the third set (13 kills with 6 errors in 44 attempts.
- Dakota State raced to a 5-1 lead in the third set, highlighted by three different hitters with a kill each (M. Groft, Schell, and Macy Wetsch).
- With DSU leading 11-9, the V-Hawks went on a 4-0 scoring tear to overtake a 13-11 lead after Kleman's kill.
- Taylor Larson hit a service ace as VU widen their lead to 19-14. The Trojans answered with a 5-1 scoring run to reduce their deficit to 20-19, burning a timeout for the V-Hawks.
- At 21-20, Viterbo closed the third set with a 4-0 run to grab a 2-1 match lead after a 25-20 victory.
- The V-Hawks smashed 15 kills in the third set and hit .244 (8 errors in 41 attempts). The Trojans had 14 kills and hit .256 (4 errors in 39 swings).
- Trailing 8-7 in the fourth set, Dakota State went on a monstrous 8-1 scoring run to balloon their lead to 15-9 after Grage's kill.
- The Trojans never trailed for the rest of the fourth set, dominating the V-Hawks by the score of 25-15. DSU's Schell smashed a kill to close the fourth set and forced the fifth and deciding set.
- A total of seven ties and four lead changes were registered in the fourth set.
- DSU outhit VU 14-10 in the fourth set. The Trojans hit .262 (3 errors in 42 attempts) and held the V-Hawks to .038 hitting percentage (8 errors in 52 attempts).
- Viterbo opened the deciding set with five kills to spark a 6-1 opening run, forcing Dakota State to call a timeout.
- The Trojans could get no closer than four points at 6-2 and 7-3 as the V-Hawks closed the match with an 8-2 outburst.
- VU outhit DSU 9-1 in the fifth set. The V-Hawks hit .350 (2 errors in 20 attempts) while the Trojans were held to negative .158 hitting percentage (4 errors in 19 swings).
- Grage led the Trojans with 12 kills. Schell posted a double-double of 10 kills and 15 digs. Viet smashed 11 kills and hit .303. She had two blocks.
- Langerock produced a double-double of 30 set assists and 14 digs for DSU. M. Groft added 15 digs, six assists, three kills, and a service ace.
- Vanessa Schroeder tallied eight kills and hit .500 for DSU. She also had seven blocks in the match. Peyton Groft collected 18 digs. VonnaGail Schlechter had 11 digs.
- Kenzie Winker paced the V-Hawks with a double-double of 14 kills and 19 digs. Jada Mitchell and Kleman each added 12 kills and four blocks. Grace Rohde tallied 10 k ills. Martina McGrath had eight kills.
- Lauryn Sobasky contributed 33 set assists and nine digs for VU. Cailie Kowal added 23 assists and five digs.
- Adrianna Reinhardt accumulated a match-high 37 digs and three service aces for Viterbo. Kenidi McCabe added 13 digs and two service aces.
- VU outhit DSU 59-47 in the match. The V-Hawks hit .155 (29 attack errors in 194 swings) compared to the Trojans .109 hitting percentage (27 attack errors in 183 attempts).
- Dakota State registered a service percentage of 93.3 percent (1 ace and 6 errors in 89 serves). Viterbo struggled at the serving line by committing 11 errors and recorded six aces in 102 serves (89.2 percent).
- Both teams had nine blocks in the match.
