Saints end Trojans' volleyball season at NSAA Postseason Tournament

WATERTOWN, S.D. – Sixth-seeded Presentation (S.D.) outhit third-seeded Dakota State (S.D.) 56-42 to earn a 3-0 sweep Friday morning in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 North Star Athletic Association Women's Volleyball Postseason Tournament.  The loss ended Trojans' season at 17-17 overall record.

The Saints move on to the semifinal round against No. 2 seed Bellevue (Neb.) in the second session at 5 p.m., with the winner moving on to the championship match on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Jenna Frank, Riley Grandpre, Peyton Groft, Savannah Mares, Vanessa Schroeder, and Hannah Viet ended their collegiate volleyball career at Dakota State Friday.

Presentation (S.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL (25-22, 27-25, 25-22)

  • The Trojans opened the first set with a 7-3 lead after an attack error by the Saints.
  • Makyah Albrecht smashed a kill as PC tied the first set at 9-9.  The Saints earned its first lead of the game after going on a 4-0 scoring run after trailing 11-9.
  • A service ace by Olivia Corey stretched PC's lead to 19-14, forcing DSU to call a timeout.  Madalyn Groft smashed a kill to end the scoring drought and trailed 19-15.
  • Trailing 22-16, the Trojans went on a 3-0 scoring run thanks to a pair of kills by Hannah Viet to trim Presentation's lead to 22-19.
  • Sydney Schell smashed a kill to save PC's set point, trailing 24-22.  Grace Tobin smashed a kill to secure the first set, giving Presentation a 1-0 match lead after a 25-22 victory.
  • PC outhit DSU 20-14 in the first set.  The Saints hit .283 (5 errors in 53 attempts) compared to the Trojans .213 hitting percentage (4 errors in 47 swings).
  • The Saints raced to a 4-0 lead in the second set capped by Savanna Koga's kill.
  • DSU answered with a 3-0 scoring run, started by a kill from Brooklyn Grage, followed by VonnaGail Schlechter's service ace, and Viet's kill to cut PC's lead to 4-3.
  • At 5-4, Presentation went on a 5-0 scoring run to widen their lead to 10-5 after Tobin's kill.
  • Trialing 12-5, Dakota State answered with a 4-0 scoring run highlighted a kill by Schell and M. Groft (DSU trailed 12-9).
  • After falling behind 15-10, the Trojans stormed back with a 5-0 run to tie the second set at 15-15 after Grage's kill.
  • With DSU leading 21-20, Presentation went on a 4-0 scoring run after four different hits recording a kill (Tobin, Olivia Corey, Maggie Heesch, and Makynna Snow) to set up a set point chance at 24-21.
  • Grage smashed three straight kills to save three set point opportunities as Dakota State tied the second set at 24-24. 
  • DSU saved another set point chance by PC, tying at 25-25 after a block by Viet and Grandpre.  
  • Albrecht smashed a kill to put Saints up 26-25, followed by Snow's kill to secure the second set at 27-25 and extended their match lead to 2-0.
  • The Saints outhit the Trojans 17-14 in the second set.
  • The third set was closely tight with the lead no greater than three points by the Saints at 6-3 and 14-11.
  • Grandpre smashed a kill as DSU trialed 14-12 in the third set.
  • Presentation went on a 3-0 scoring run to balloon their lead to 17-12 after back-to-back kills by Tobin.  DSU answered with a 4-0 run after the timeout capped by Grandpre's kill, trailing 17-16.
  • Dakota State could get no closer than one point at 19-18 (M. Groft's kill), 20-19 (Grage's kill) and 21-20 (Sophia Vanden Bosch's kill). 
  • The Saints went on a 3-0 scoring run to set up a match point chance at 24-20 after Tobin's kill.
  • Vanden Bosch smashed a kill followed by a block from Schroeder and Grandpre as the Trojans trailed 24-22.
  • Tobin secured the match with a kill, giving PC its 3-0 sweep over DSU after a 25-22 victory.
  • The Saints outhit the Trojans 19-14 in the third set. 
  • Grage sparked the Trojans with 12 kills.  Schell added nine kills and 13 digs.  Viet recorded eight kills and three blocks.
  • Viet finished as the third all-time blocks with 365 blocks in DSU women's volleyball program history.
  • M. Groft tallied 19 digs, 14 set assists, and six kills for Dakota State.  Maddi Langerock produced 18 set assists and 11 digs.  Grandpre had four kills and three blocks.
  • Peyton Groft collected 20 digs for DSU.  She finished her stellar career as the all-time digs with 2,394 digs.
  • Tobin led the Saints with 16 kills and produced a double-double with 21 digs.  Albrecht had 10 kills.  Kerstin Knopik had nine kills and six blocks   Snow had seven kills and seven digs.
  • Corey had a double-double of 24 set assists and 17 digs for PC.  Sydney Miller added 20 set assists and 14 digs.  Savannah Koga had five blocks.
  • Presentation hit 210 in the match (19 errors in 176 swings) compared to Dakota State .167 hitting percentage (15 attack errors in 162 attempts).
  • The Saints hit 97.4 percent at the serving line with four aces and two errors in 76 serves.  The Trojans were 97.1 percent at the serving line with two aces and two errors in 70 attempts.
  • PC had eight blocks compared to DSU four blocks.  Presentation collected 91 digs, while Dakota State registered 75 digs.
