La CROSSE, Wis. – Dakota State (S.D.) faced a fourth team that qualified for the NAIA Women's Basketball National Tournament last year on the first day of the Viterbo (Wis.) Tournament at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium Friday afternoon. The Trojans shook off their slow start and routed Iowa Wesleyan 70-48. It was the second straight game that DSU held its opponents to below 50 points (Mount Marty, S.D. with 49 points on Nov. 7).
Dakota State, receiving votes in the national preseason coaches' preseason poll, improved to 2-3 overall record. Iowa Wesleyan, a member of the Continental Athletic Conference, saw their three-game winning streak came to an end and fell to 3-2 overall record.
The Trojans wrap up the week with another contest in the Viterbo Tournament, facing Indiana Northwest at 1 p.m.
(RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 70, Iowa Wesleyan 48 – FINAL
- Iowa Wesleyan opened the game with a 7-2 lead, capped by a 3-pointer from Megan Teall with seven minutes, 34 seconds on the clock.
- Dakota State answered with a 12-2 scoring outburst, sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers from Morgan Huber. Caitlin Dyer made a lay-up with 3:37 left in the first quarter as DSU grabbed a 16-9 lead.
- The Trojans stretched its scoring run to 23-4, ending with a layup by Sidney Fick (assisted by Courtney Menning) for a 25-11 lead.
- DSU shot 10-of-17 from the field in the first period compared to IWU 5-of-10 field goals. The Tigers committed six turnovers in the first ten minutes.
- Savannah Walsdorf kicked off the second quarter with a 3-pointer (assisted by Huber), ballooning DSU's lead to 28-11.
- IWU's Teall ended the Trojans' 25-4 outburst with a layup with 8:28 on the clock in the second (DSU led 28-13).
- Both teams scored 13 points in the second period as the Trojans led 38-24 by halftime.
- DSU and IWU struggled offensively in the first two-plus minutes of the third quarter. Fick ended the scoring drought with a lay-up wot give Trojans a 40-24 lead with 7:36 on the clock.
- Teall drained a 3-pointer as Iowa Wesleyan reduced their deficit into single digit at 44-35 with 2:01 to go in the third quarter.
- Dakota State led 47-38 after three quarters, capped by a free-throw from Tabor Teel.
- IWU outscored DSU 14-9 in the first ten minutes of the second half. IWU was 5-of-9 from the field and committed nine turnovers in the third quarter. DSU was 4-of-20 from the field.
- Leading 49-41, Fick scored six straight points to ignite DSU's 8-0 scoring run to widen their led to 57-41 with 6:10 remaining.
- Lilli Mackley hit a 3-pointer (assisted by Huber) as Dakota State's lead grew by 20 points at 63-43 with 4:41 left.
- DSU recorded its biggest lead of the game at 68-46 after a 3-pointer from Dyer with less than two minutes to go.
- The Trojans outscored the Tigers 23-10 in the final 10 minutes of the game. DSU was 10-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-5 from the 3-point arc. IWU was held to 3-of-11 from the field.
- Fick and Dyer each scored 16 points for Dakota State on a combined 14-of-25 field goals. Fick grabbed six rebounds. Walsdorf added nine points and seven rebounds. She stole the ball six times. Huber scored nine points off the bench and dished out four assists.
- Walsdorf and Menning each registered four assists for DSU. Angela Slattery scored seven points. Mackley and Slattery each pulled down five rebounds.
- Teall posted a double-double of 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Iowa Wesleyan. Breanna Wendland had 10 points. Isabell West tallied 15 points and eight rebounds.
- Dakota State shot 29-of-67 from the field (43.3 percent) compared to Iowa Wesleyan 18-of-46 field goals (39.1 percent).
- The Trojans outrebounded the Tigers 36-31.
- DSU outscored IWU 21-7 in points off turnovers, 36-18 inside the paint, and 37-2 in bench points.
