MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) closed out the Trojan Field era, which was built in the late 1960's, Saturday afternoon in winter weather with cold temperature versus Waldorf (Iowa) in the North Star Athletic Association football action.  The Trojans shut out the Warriors 13-0 to earn their second straight winning season with an overall record at 6-4, as well as second straight season with a home field winning record (3-2 record and 7 wins in the last 9 home games at Trojan Field).  DSU also collected its fourth win in the last five games.

The victory put Dakota State in a second-place tie with Valley City State (N.D.) in the NSAA football regular-season finale with 4-2 record each (DSU however beat Valley City State 31-17 earlier in the season).  The win also ended the Trojans' seven-game losing skid in the series meeting with the Warriors with last win coming on Oct. 7, 2017, when the Trojans routed WU at Trojan Field by the score of 59-20.

It was the first shutout victory at Trojan Field since Oct. 23, 2004, when Dakota State stormed past Mayville State 62-0 in the former Dakota Athletic Conference.

Former DSU athletes that played at Trojan Field (football and track/field) gathered prior to the game to serve as the honorary captains, reflecting on the years those athletes had played at the Trojan Field since the late 1960's.

Waldorf finished their 2022 season with their third setback in the last four games, falling to 7-4 overall record and 3-3 record in league play (fourth place in the final NSAA football standings).

FIRST QUARTER

  • Waldorf opened the game with 10 plays for 26 yards in four minutes and forty-seven seconds.  The Trojans halted the Warriors' drive on their fourth-and-one situation on DSU's 43-yard line as Mason Lloyd tackled Taye Buchanan for a 3-yard loss, turning the ball on downs on DSU's 46-yard line with 10:07 on the clock.
  • Dakota State would set up the first scoring drive of the game on the ensuing possession, highlighted by a 40-yard reception by Dajshon Keel from Zach Brooks on a third down situation on DSU's 50-yard line to WU's 10-yard line.
  • After a 7-yard rush by Brooks, Gavin Holland rushed for a 3-yard touchdown to give DSU a 6-0 lead with 7:34 to go in the first quarter.  Noah Karwacki followed up with the PAT extra point kick to extend the Trojans' lead to 7-0.
