MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) ended their Trojan Field era last Saturday after the football team shut down Waldorf (Iowa) 13-0 on Nov. 12 to end the memorable years of Trojan Field. Not only football games were played at Trojan Field, but there were also outdoor track & field meets that were held at Trojan Field.
After the inception of the Trojan Field in the late 1960's, the Trojans started to field a men's track & field team and later added a women's track & field team in the 1970's.
Buzz Stevenson later became the head coach of the Dakota State track & field teams in the 1980's, where numerous All-Conference and All-America athletes were produced.
Dakota State dominated the outdoor track & field seasons during the late 1990's. The Trojan women's squads had produced five South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference (SDIC) outdoor track & field team titles (1982, 1984, 1995, 1996, and 1997).
The Trojan men's outdoor track & field team also produced a pair of SDIC outdoor track & field titles in 1996 and 1997. DSU then added three more conference titles from the North Star Athletic Association in 2019, 2021, and 2022, under the guidance head coach Anthony Drealan.
The last collegiate outdoor track & field meet held at Trojan Field was on May 10-11, 2018, when Dakota State hosted the North Star Athletic Association Championships.
The Trojan Field also served as the host site for the Madison High School high school track & field meets, as well as state track & field meets. In addition, the Trojan Field also held the annual Barker Relays as well as collegiate/high school meets, Senior Citizens summer sporting events, Hershey Youth Track Meet, summer running programs for kids from elementary through high school, marching band contests, and many other community events.
