(RV) Trojans cruise past Warriors in home opener at DSU Fieldhouse

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.), receiving votes (RV) in the NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 preseason poll, scored at least 20 points in each quarter Tuesday evening to roll past Bacone (Okla.) 96-40 in the women's basketball home opener at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans stretched their home winning streak to four games, dating back to last season, as well as their 32nd home victory in the last 35 home games since the late 2020 season.

DSU extended their winning streak to four games, raising their overall record to 4-3.  Bacone, a member of Continental Athletic Conference (CAC), fell to 0-3 overall record.  It was the first-ever meeting between DSU and BC.

Dakota State heads to Strode Center in Aberdeen, S.D., on the campus of Presentation (S.D.) for the third annual Dakota Clash.  The Trojans open the tournament versus Valley City State (N.D.) Friday evening at 5 p.m.  DSU also plays Mayville State (N.D.) Saturday at 2 p.m.

(RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 96, Bacone (Okla.) 40 – FINAL

  • Bacone grabbed their only lead of the game at 3-0 as Jayla McIntosh drained a 3-pointer with nine minutes, five seconds on the clock.
  • Dakota State went on to score 21 straight points to open a 21-3 lead capped by Lilli Mackley's steal followed by a lay-up with 3:19 to go in the first period.
  • The Warriors were held scoreless for six-plus minutes, ending their drought with 3:03 on the clock after a 3-pointer from M'Kenzey Ackley (DSU led 21-6).
  • Elsie Aslesen made a second-chance opportunity with a lay-up to put DSU 26-14 with less than 34 seconds to go in the first quarter.
  • Dakota State shot 9-of-19 from the field (47.4 percent) in the first ten minutes and forced Bacone to 10 turnovers.  The Trojans outscored the Warriors 15-3 in points off turnovers in the first period.
  • DSU opened the second quarter by scoring 12 straight points to balloon their lead to 38-14 after a 3-point play by Olivia Ritter with 7:23 on the clock.
  • Dakota State's lead continued to grow as Aslesen closed the first half with a lay-up, widening their lead to 53-19.
  • The Trojans outscored the Warriors 27-5 in the second quarter.  DSU was 12-of-17 from the field (70.6 percent) in the final ten minutes of the first half.  Bacone was held to 2-for 13 field goals in the second period.
  • DSU maintained their double-dight lead for the rest of the game.  Savannah Walsdorf hit a lay-up to give the Trojans a 73-28 lead by the end of the third quarter. 
  • Dakota State outscored Bacone 20-9 in the third period.
  • DSU produced the biggest lead of the game with less than 45 seconds to go in the game, a lay-up by Miakken Vincent (assisted by Tabor Teel) for a 96-40 lead.
  • Dakota State outscored the Warriors 23-12 in the final ten minutes of the game.
  • The Trojans' balanced scoring attack saw 12 different players scored in the game.  Aslesen produced a double-double of 17 points and pulled down 13 rebounds (tied career high rebounds).  She was 7-of-9 from the field.  She had two blocks.
  • Walsdorf, who was named to North Star Athletic Association Women's Basketball Player-of-the-Week Monday, tallied 14 points on her 6-of-10 field goals for DSU.  She also grabbed seven rebounds.  Ritter added 13 points and stole the ball a season-high four times. 
  • Angela Slattery scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench for Dakota State.  Mackley scored nine points, earned four rebounds, and recorded three steals.  Courtney Menning dished out a season-high seven assists and scored six points.
  • Teel registered five points and four assists for the Trojans.  Sidney Fick, Vincent, Teel, and Slattery each recorded a block.  Mackley and Caitlin Dyer each had three steals.
  • McIntosh led the Warriors with 14 points.  Malia Jacobs added nine points.  Ackley had six points.  Annira Sewell recorded three rebounds. 
  • Dakota State collected 39 more rebounds than Bacone, grabbing a season-high 57 rebounds (compared to BC 18 rebounds).  The Trojans outrebounded the Warriors 24-1 on offensive boards.  DSU outscored BC 25-0 in second chance points.
  • The Trojans outscored the Warriors 39-5 in points off turnovers and 52-6 inside the paint.
