Midland (Neb.) shuts down Dakota State (S.D.) in baseball pitcher's duel

OMAHA, Neb. – Midland (Neb.) won the pitcher's duel with Dakota State (S.D.) 2-0 in the second game of the Joplin (Mo.) Tournament Saturday evening at Millard North High School baseball field.  The setback ended the Trojans' six-game winning streak.

The Trojans are 6-2 overall record.  The Warriors, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, lifted their overall record to 4-1.

Dakota State looks to bound back in the winning column Sunday with another two games in the Joplin Tournament, hosted by Graceland (Iowa).  The Trojans face Clarke (Iowa) at 2 p.m. and close out the tournament with a contest versus Morningside (Iowa) at 5 p.m.  Both games will be Millard North High School baseball field.

Midland (Neb.) 2, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

  • After two-and-half scoreless innings, Midland scored once in the bottom third frame.  Tyler Foster reached safely on base after an error caused by the Trojans.
  • Beau Boyle followed up with a single to advance Foster to second base in the bottom third.  Both Foster and Boyle each advanced one base on the same play caused by DSU's defensive error. 
  • Chase Reynolds hit an RBI sacrifice to score Foster to give Warriors a 1-0 lead in the bottom third inning.
  • Midland added a run in the bottom sixth, highlighted by Connor Petersen's one-out double.  Alex Villanueva hit an RBI single to score Trey Nichols (pinch runner for Peterson) to extend MU's lead to 2-0.
  • Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring chances in the final inning, securing the win for Midland.
  • Noah Angstadt and Walker Hultgren each reached safely on base by a walk for the Trojans. 
  • The Warriors left seven runners on base compared to Trojans' three runners left on base.
  • Boyle was 3-of-3 at the plate for Midland.  Villanueva had a single and an RBI.  Petersen had a double.
  • Will Clair (L, 0-1) took the setback despite tossing a complete game in six innings for Dakota State.  He allowed two runs (one unearned) on five hits.  He struck out six MU's batters.
  • Jay Lambert pitched a complete game victory for Midland.  He recorded seven strikeouts and issued two walks in the game.
