Balanced scoring attack fuels (24) Trojans to NSAA women's basketball season series sweep of Saints

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Twelve different Dakota State (S.D.) players scored, thanks to five different players scoring double figures, and rolled to an 87-66 North Star Athletic Association women's basketball victory over Presentation (S.D.) Friday evening at Strode Center.  The Trojans never trailed in the forty minutes basketball game.

Dakota State, ranked No. 24 in the latest NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, won for the seventh time in the last eight games and raised their overall record to 19-7.  The Trojans are 9-1 record in the NSAA conference contests.  Presentation fell to 5-17 overall record and 2-8 NSAA conference record. 

The Trojans won their seventh straight meeting with the Saints.  DSU also won for the 22nd time in the last 26 meetings with PC.

Dakota State concludes their North Star's four-game road trip, visiting Lewy Lee Fieldhouse to take on Mayville State (N.D.) in the battle of the top two teams in the conference.  The game is set for 3 p.m. tip-off in Mayville, N.D.

(24) Dakota State (S.D.) 88, Presentation (S.D.) 67 – FINAL

  • The Trojans and the Saints went through three ties in the first six-plus minutes of the game.  Tied at 11-11, Dakota State closed the first period with a 6-1 scoring run.  Miakken Vincent capped the scoring with a 3-point play to give DSU a 17-12 advantage.
  • DSU was 7-of-13 from the field (53.8 percent) in the first ten minutes of the game and held PC to 4-of-13 field goals (30.8 percent).
  • Dakota State raced to a 28-12 lead in the early second quarter, thanks to their 11-0 scoring outburst in the first 1:15. 
  • The Trojans made their first five shots of the second period from four different scorers – Vincent, Courtney Menning, Lexi Robson, and Jessi Giles.  Giles drained a 3-pointer to balloon DSU's lead to 31-14.
  • With Dakota State leading 35-23, Presentation went on a 6-0 run to trim their deficit to 35-29 after a pair of free-throws by Kat Kriener with 3:02 on the clock in the second.
  • Shaylee DeBeer drained a 3-pointer as the Trojans grabbed a 40-32 halftime lead.
  • Robson sparked DSU's 8-0 third quarter opening run with a 3-pointer followed by a layup by Elsie Aslesen and a 3-pointer by Giles for a 48-32 lead.
  • At 48-35, the Trojans went on a 9-0 scoring run ignited by a 3-pointer from Angela Slattery.  Three other DSU scored during the scoring run with back-to-back layups from Morgan Huber and Menning followed by a 3-pointer by DeBeer to widen their lead to 58-37.
  • Dakota State outscored Presentation 27-17 in the third quarter, extending their lead to 67-49.
  • DSU shot 10-of-19 from the field in the third period (52.6 percent), while PC was 4-of-7 from the field and committed 10 turnovers.
  • The Trojans maintained control for the rest of the game, securing the victory.  Ashlyn Macdonald hit a pair of free-throws to record the biggest lead of the game a 78-51 with 5:52 remaining.
  • Giles scored 15 points for the Trojans.  Savannah Walsdorf added 10 points, dished out three assists, and stole the ball three times.  Menning was 5-of-6 from the field for 11 points.  She also had three steals.
  • Robson and DeBeer each tallied 10 points for DSU.  Robson had four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.  DeBeer contributed four assists and stole the ball twice.
  • Macdonald registered seven points and grabbed seven rebounds for Dakota State.  Slattery and Vincent each had five points.  Cheylee Nagel, Vincent, and Giles each recorded two assists.
  • Brittiney Seymour led the Saints with 16 points on her 7-of-10 field goals.  She had seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocks.  Emma Ogitchida added 14 points and five assists.  Nek Newell talled 11 points and seven rebounds.
  • Jordan Kulczyk pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for Presentation.  Kriener had nine points and three assists off the bench.
  • Dakota State shot 33-of-70 from the field (47.1 percent) compared to Presentation 21-of-45 field goals (46.7 percent).  The Trojans hit 10-of-27 3-pointers (37 percent) while the Saints were 2-of-8 3-pointers. 
  • PC converted 22-of-26 free-throws in the game (84.6 percent).  DSU was 11-of-14 free-throws (78.6 percent). 
  • The Saints outrebounded the Trojans 30-27.
  • DSU outscored PC 25-4 in points off turnovers and 37-16 in bench points.
