DALLAS, Texas – Despite trailing 5-2 after the first inning in the first game Saturday at Dallas Christian Baseball Field, Dakota State (S.D.) outscored NCAA Division III Capital 21-2 for the rest of the game to earn a 25-7 victory. It was the fifth straight victory for the Trojans and their second straight game with at least 23 runs.
Dakota State (S.D.) raised their overall record to 11-5. Capital fell to 4-8 overall record.
The Trojans wrap up their road trip with a contest against host-team Dallas Christian (Texas) at 3 p.m.
Dakota State (S.D.) 23, Capital (Ohio) 7 – FINAL
- Ryan McDaniel led off with a walk for Dakota State. Noah Angstadt followed up with a single and advanced courtesy runner Bennett Osborn to second base.
- Jace Pribyl drilled a 2-RBI triple to score Angstadt and Angstadt to give DSU a 2-0 lead with two outs in the top first inning.
- The Comets produced three doubles in the bottom half of the first inning, capped by Connor Feeney and Tyler Knapp with back-to-back 2-RBI doubles for 5-2 lead over DSU.
- Kameron Bryant and Mason Macaluso hit back-to-back doubles with one out in the top third frame. Macaluso produced an RBI to score Bryant as DSU trimmed their deficit to 5-3.
- Capital plated two runs in the bottom third inning. Knapp hit an RBI single, and Abram Sykora added an RBI sacrifice fly to balloon CC's lead to 7-3.
- Dakota State exploded for eight runs in the top fourth inning. Walker Hultgren ignited the inning with a double. Jackson O'Neal hit an RBI single to score Hultgren to trim their deficit to 7-4.
- McDaniel drilled an RBI double with one out to score O'Neal as DSU trailed 7-5 in the top fourth. Angstadt added a double to advance Osborn to third base (courtesy runner for McDaniel).
- Bryant drilled a 2-RBI double to score Osborn and Angstadt to knot the game at 7-7 in the top fourth inning. After Macaluso was intentionally walked, Pribyl hit an RBI single to score Bryant as the Trojans rained their lead to 8-7.
- Chris Burke hit an RBI single to score Macaluso to make it 9-7 in favor of the Trojans.
- The Trojans extended their lead to 11-7 after O'Neal's 2-RBI single to score Pribyl and Burke.
- Dakota State added six more runs in the top fifth inning, highlighted by Bryant's RBI double and Pribyl's 2-RBI double. O'Neal also had a 2-RBI single. DSU widen their lead to 17-7 after five innings.
- DSU plated six more runs in the top seventh inning. Seth Altwine hit a 2-RBI double, followed by McDaniel's RBI single. Bryant smashed an RBI triple to make it 21-7 in favorite of the Trojans.
- Macaluso followed up with a 2-run home run to balloon DSU's lead to 23-7.
- Dakota State drilled 11 doubles in the game, paced by Bryant with three doubles. Hultgren added two doubles. McDaniel, Angstadt, Macaluso, Pribyl, Burke, and Altwine each had a double.
- Bryant and Pribyl also added a triple each for DSU. Macaluso smashed a home run.
- Pribyl and O'Neal each led the Trojans with five RBIs. Bryant added four RBIs. Macaluso had three RBIs. McDaniel and Altwine each had two RBIs.
- Knapp led the Comets with two hits and three RBIs. Feeney added two hits and two RBIs. Sykora and Logan White each produced a hit and an RBI.
- JD Kirchner started the game on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed the first inning. Kahlil Tilbury (W, 2-0) recorded the victory after pitching three innings. He allowed two runs on three hits. David Kirby pitched two scoreless innings in relief and recorded four strikeouts. Carver Hultgren tossed a shutout seventh inning in relief.
- Gavin Vanhorn tossed 3 1/3 innings for the Comets. He allowed six runs on eight hits. Colin Boldin (L, 0-1) recorded the loss after giving up five runs on four hits. Capital used four different pitchers in relief.
