FOREST CITY, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) and Waldorf (Iowa) were originally scheduled to play the North Star Athletic Association baseball opener at Flynn Field this weekend. The conference four-game series switched to Waldorf Baseball Field as the Trojans held on to win the first game by the score of 15-11. The Warriors used a quick start in the second game to earn a doubleheader split after a 5-2 victory.
Dakota State, who is the home team in the four-game series. is 13-7 overall record. Waldorf is 2-15 overall record. Both teams are 1-1 record in North Star conference.
DSU and WU wrap up their NSAA four-game series Sunday with another doubleheader. First game is set for 12 noon with a nine-inning game and concluding with a seven-inning contest in the second game.
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 15, Waldorf (Iowa) 11 – FINAL
- Dakota State used a quick start in the first game of the doubleheader, sprinting to a 7-0 lead after two innings. The Trojans held off the Warriors' late comeback with five runs in the final inning to secure the North Star conference season opener victory.
- DSU ignited the bottom first inning with three runs scored. Ryan McDaniel reached on base by WU's defensive error. Noah Angstadt followed up with a single and advanced courtesy runner Bennett Osborn (for McDaniel) to third (Angstadt was out at second base advancing on the same play).
- Kameron Bryant produced an RBI fielder's choice to score Osborn to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
- Mason Macaluso hit a single to advance Bryant to second base with one out in the bottom first.
- Dakota State made it 2-0 as Jace Pribyl hit an RBI single to score Bryant with one out (Macaluso advanced to second base).
- Walker Hultgren drilled a two-out RBI double to score Macaluso as the Trojans' lead grew to 3-0 in the bottom first.
- DSU exploded for four runs in the bottom half of the second frame. Seth Altwine led off with a single. He advanced to second base after WU's passed ball. McDaniel added a walk.
- Altwine and Osborn (courtesy runner for McDaniel) recorded a double steal, while Altwine scored home after a defensive miscue committed by WU. DSU led 4-0 (Osborn advanced to third base).
- Angstadt followed up with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Osborn as the Trojans ballooned their lead to 5-0 in the bottom second.
- Bryant reached safely on base after WU's error for DSU. He swiped to second base with two outs. Pribyl hit an RBI double to score Bryant, followed by Chris Burke's RBI single to score Pribyl as DSU's lead grew to 7-0 after two innings.
- Waldorf broke its scoring drought with two runs in the top third. Damien Sanchez was hit by pitch with one out. Thomas Capllonch hit a double to advance Sanchez to third base. Davis Churchman produced an RBI ground out to score Sanchez as WU trailed 7-1.
- Josh Fussy followed up with an RBI single to score Capllonch as the Warriors trimmed DSU's lead to 7-2 in the top third.
- James Hook led off the top fourth with a double for Waldorf. Atticus Smith hit an RBI single with one out to score Hook as the Warriors reduced their deficit to 7-3.
- Jackson O'Neal blasted a solo home run in the bottom sixth inning to widen DSU's lead to 8-3.
- Dakota State continued its scoring run with three more runs in the bottom seventh. Macaluso led off with a double followed by Pribyl's walk. Burke produced a sacrifice bunt to advance Macaluso third base and Pribyl to second base.
- O'Neal hit a two-out RBI single to score Macaluso to make it 9-3 in favor of DSU in the bottom seventh (Pribyl advanced to third). Altwine added a walk to set up a bases loaded situation (O'Neal to second base).
- McDaniel hit a 2-RBI single to score Pribyl and O'Neal, ballooning DSU's lead to 11-3 after seven innings.
- Sanchez hit a 3-run home run in the top eighth frame as Waldorf cut Dakota State's lead to 11-6.
- Dakota State answered with four runs in the bottom eighth inning. Macaluso hit a double with one out followed by Pribyl's single to advance Macaluso to third base.
- As Burke recorded a walk, Macaluso scored home after WU's wild pitch as DSU's lead went up to 12-6 (Pribyl advanced to second base).
- O'Neal recorded a walk with two outs to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans in bottom eighth. Alec Gannon, pinch runner for Pribyl, scored home after another wild pitch by the Warriors to make it 13-6 DSU.
- Altwine added a walk to for a bases loaded situation for Dakota State. McDaniel hit a 2-RBI single to score Burke and O'Neal as DSU extended their lead to 15-6.
- Waldorf poured in five runs, highlighted by seven hits in the final inning. Ryan Webster and Hook hit back-to-back doubles, as Hook produced an RBI to score Webster as WU trailed 15-7.
- Smith added an RBI single to score Hook as the Warriors trailed 15-8.
- Waldorf produced three runs on three straight hits – Sanchez's RBI double, Capllonch's RBI single, and Churchman's RBI single. The Warriors reduced the Trojans' lead to 15-11 with one out.
- Dakota State halted Waldorf's late comeback by retiring the final two batters, securing the victory.
- O'Neal had a home run, single and drove in two runs for DSU. Macaluso added two doubles, single and scored three runs. Pribyl had a double, two singles and two RBIs.
- McDaniel tallied a double, single and collected four RBIs. Angstadt added two singles and an RBI. Burke and Hultgren each had a hit and an RBI. Altwine had two singles. Osborn scored twice. Osborn, Bryant, and Altwine each recorded a stolen base.
- Sanchez led the Warriors with a home run, double, and tallied four RBIs. Smith added three hits and two RBIs. Hook had two doubles and an RBI.
- Capllonch registered a double, two singles and an RBI for the Warriors. Nathan Westfield and Jimmy Mapakou each swiped one base.
- DSU outhit WU 16-15 in the game. The Warriors committed four defensive miscues compared to the Trojans one error. Waldorf left 13 runners on base, while Dakota State had eight runners left on base.
- Will Clair (W, 2-2) earned the victory after working for five-plus innings on the pitching mound for DSU. He allowed three runs on five hits and registered five strikeouts. Noah Daugherty tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief, giving up three runs on one hit. He had three strikeouts. Aiden Urbom worked the final 1 2/3 innings in relief.
- Gavin Williams (L, 0-3) took the loss after pitching six innings for WU. He gave up eight runs (four unearned) on 10 hits. Kade Hobbs and AJ Oddo each worked for one inning in relief.
Game 2 – Waldorf (Iowa) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL
- Waldorf took advantage of a fast start in the second game of the doubleheader, defeating Dakota State by three runs to earn a split.
- Smith led off the game with a walk for the Warriors. He advanced to second base with one out after DSU's wild pitch. Churchman drilled an RBI double to score Smith as WU grabbed a 1-0 lead.
- Churchman swiped to third base and scored home caused by DSU's error on the same play, extending the Warriors' lead to 2-0 in the top first.
- The Warriors continued its top first inning after a dropped third strike while Pussy reached safely on base caused by DSU's error. He advanced to second base after a wild pitch by the Trojans.
- Hook produced an RBI single to score Fussy to make it 3-0 in favor of Waldorf.
- WU ballooned their lead to 4-0 in the top second frame, highlighted by Capllonch's RBI double to score Jake Denney who led off with a walk.
- The Trojans scored once in the bottom half of the second inning. Pribyl hit a single with one out. Hultgren drilled an RBI double to score Pribyl as DSU trailed 4-1.
- Bryant smashed a lead-off home run in the bottom fourth inning as Dakota State cut Waldorf's lead to 4-2.
- Waldorf plated one run in the top fifth inning. Sanchez led off with a walk and advanced to second after DSU's passed ball. Churchman hit an RBI single to score Sanchez as WU increased their lead to 5-2.
- Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring chances in the final inning as they left bases loaded, securing the victory for Waldorf.
- Hultgren was 2-of-3 at the plate with a double, single and an RBI for the Trojans. Bryant added a home run and an RBI. Pribyl had a single. O'Neal and Altwine each recorded a walk.
- Churchman led the Warriors with a double, single, and drove int wo runs. Capllonch added a double, single, and an RBI. Hook recorded a single and an RBI. Sanchez reached on base by a walk two times.
- Sanchez, Mapakou, Churchman, and Denney each swiped one base for WU.
- Waldorf registered five hits in the game compared to Dakota State four hits. The Warriors left six runners on base, while the Trojans had five runners left on base.
- Grant Svikulis (L, 3-1) took the setback on the pitching mound for the Trojans. He tossed five innings and gave up five runs (two unearned) on four hits. He struck out six WU's batters. Nicholi Arbach pitched two scoreless innings in relief and struck out four Warrior batters.
- Jamie Olson (W, 2-4) tossed a complete game victory for the Warriors. He allowed two runs on four hits and registered five hits.
