BRANDON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) met for the second time this season in the nine-inning baseball contest Wednesday evening at Aspen Park. The Trojans scored first but could not overcome the Tigers' offensive explosion in the fourth inning in 8-4 setback.
Dakota State, who swept a doubleheader over Dakota Wesleyan on Feb. 20 at Aspen Park, lost their fourth straight game to drop their overall record to 6-5. The Tigers earned its first win of the season, improving their overall record to 1-2.
DSU remains on the road on Tuesday as they visit Randall (Okla.) in a non-conference doubleheader. The first game is set for 12 p.m. at Randall Baseball Field in Moore, Okla.
Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL
- DSU's Noah Angstadt reached safely on base caused by DWU's defensive error with two outs in the opening inning. Mason Macaluso followed up with a single to advance Angstadt to second base.
- Kameron Bryant produced an RBI single to score Angstadt to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the top first.
- Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring chances in the top second inning, despite a walk from Josh Van Beek followed by a double by Walker Hultgren with one out.
- Daulton Wilcoxen and Matt Bezdicek hit back-to-back singles with one out for the Tigers in the bottom second frame. Jacob Hammons drilled an RBI double to score WIlcoxen to knot the game at 1-1.
- Kalub Carmichael smashed a 3-run home run as DWU earned a 4-1 lead.
- The Trojans answered with a run scored in the top third. Bryant and Jace Pribyl hit back-to-back singles with two outs. Jackson O'Neal hit an RBI single to score Bryant as the Trojans trailed 4-2.
- Dakota Wesleyan plated two runs in the bottom half of the third inning. After DSU's defense recorded a double play, Bezdicek drilled a double. Luke LeMay hit an RBI single to score Bezdicek as the Tigers' lead grew to 5-2 (LeMay advanced to second base on throw).
- Chris Burke hit a two-out triple in the top fourth frame and could not score for the Trojans, trailing 5-2.
- Jacob Hammons hit an RBI single to score LeMay to give DWU a 6-2 lead in the bottom third.
- Dakota Wesleyan ballooned their lead to 7-2 after Bezdicek smashed a solo home with one out in the bottom fifth.
- The Trojans scored once in the top seventh, thanks to Angstadt's lead-off single. He advanced to second base with one out after DWU's wild pitch. Jace Pribyl produced an RBI single to score Angstadt as DSU trimmed DWU's lead to 7-3.
- Dakota Wesleyan extended their lead to 8-3 after a run scored in the bottom eighth.
- The Trojans' comeback attempt in the final inning fell short. Bryant reached safely on base caused by DWU's defensive error with two outs. He advanced to second base after a wild pitch committed by the Tigers.
- Pribyl hit an RBI single to score Bryant as DSU trailed 8-4. Jackson O'Neal reached on base after being hit-by-pitch and advanced Pribyl to second base.
- Dakota State could not convert their scoring opportunities as they left two runners on base when the game ended, securing the victory for the Tigers.
- Both teams pound out 13 hits in the game. DSU left 13 runners on base compared to DWU 11 runners left on base.
- Pribyl and Bryant each finished the game by going 3-of-5 at the plate with three singles each for DSU. Pribyl collected two RBIs in the game, while Bryant had an RBI. Bryant swiped one base.
- Ryan McDaniel and Hultgren each hit a double for the Trojans. Burke had a triple. Angstadt, Mason Macaluso, O'Neal, and Josh Van Beek each had a hit. O'Neal tallied an RBI.
- Bezdicek powered the Tigers' offense with a home run, double, single and drove in one run. Carmichael had a home run and three RBIs.
- Wilcoxen added a double and single for Dakota Wesleyan. Cameron Quigley, Hunt, LeMay, and Drew Kitchens each recorded a hit.
- Will Clair (L, 0-2) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. He worked for two innings and allowed four runs on four hits. He recorded three strikeouts.
- Mitsuki Shimonishi tossed two innings in relief, giving up two runs on five hits. Aiden Urbom pitched 1 1/3 innings after yielding one run on four hits. Noah Daugherty worked the final 2 1/3 innings after allowing an unearned run. He struck out seven DWU's batters.
- Dawson Penticoff (W, 1-0) earned the victory for the Tigers. He pitched five innings and allowed two runs (one unearned) on eight hits. He recorded four strikeouts. Seth Christiansen closed out the final four innings in relief. Giving up two runs on five hits. He struck out five DSU's batters.
