MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) and Mayville State (N.D.) faced a brutal wind speed up to 50 miles-per-hour during the North Star Athletic Association baseball action at Flynn Field Friday afternoon. The Trojans rallied for a 3-2 thriller in the first game and held on to a 6-4 in the second game to earn the doubleheader sweep over the Comets. DSU and MSU went 2-2 record in the four-game series, the first time since 2016 season that the Trojans collected at two wins in the series over the Comets (which was held at Flynn Field where DSU went 3-1 record).
Dakota State lifted their overall record to 17-9, while Mayville State fell to 8-9 overall record. Both teams are 5-3 record in the North Star Athletic Association action.
The Trojans conclude their five-game home stand Tuesday afternoon versus long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.). The non-conference nine-inning contest is set for a 5 p.m. first pitch at Flynn Field.
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Mayville State (N.D.) 2 – FINAL
- Dakota State trailed 2-0 before heading in the bottom eighth inning of the nine-inning contest in the first game of the doubleheader. The Trojans erupted for three runs in the bottom eighth and held off the Comets in the top ninth inning as they left the bases full.
- Mayville State grabbed the first lead of the game in the top third frame. Tyler Ferrera hit a double with one out. Sammy Satrom followed up with an RBI single to score Ferrera to give MSU a 1-0 lead.
- The Comets added a run in the top fourth to extend their lead. Alan LaRocque led off with a walk. Brodey Rochell, courtesy runner for LaRocque, advanced to second base after Jared McCorrister's sacrifice bunt.
- Payton DeLuca produced an RBI single to score Rochell as Mayville State's lead grew to 2-0 in the top fourth inning.
- The Trojans were unable to convert their scoring chances in the bottom half of the sixth inning, despite leaving bases loaded (walk by Mason Macaluso, single by Jace Pribyl, and hit-by-pitch by Jackson O'Neal).
- DSU's Macaluso led off the bottom eighth by reaching safely on first base after MSU's defensive miscue. He advanced to second base after Pribyl's ground out.
- Walker Hultgren hit a single to advance Macaluso to third base for the Trojans. While on the same play, the Comets committed a defensive error to allow Macaluso to score as DSU trailed 2-1.
- Chris Burke followed up with a single to advance Hultgren to third base in the bottom eighth for DSU. Both made a double steal as Hultgren advanced home to knot the game at 2-2 with one out (Burke at second base).
- Seth Altwine hit a two-out RBI single to score Burke as the Trojans earned a 3-2 lead in the bottom eighth frame.
- DeLuca reached on base by a walk for the Comets with two outs in the top ninth. Adam Senden, pinch hitter for Ricky Marquez, reached safely on base caused by DSU's defensive error to advance Rochell, pinch runner for DeLuca, to second base.
- Ferrera reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation with two outs for MSU. The Trojans halted the Comets to score as the game ended in a ground out to the pitcher by Satrom.
- Altwine had a single and an RBI for Dakota State. He also had a walk. Noah Angstadt, Pribyl, Hultgren, and Burke each added a hit.
- Dakota State reached on base by a walk seven times, led by Ryan McDaniel with three walks. Kameron Bryant, Macaluso, and Burke each also recorded a walk.
- Bennett Osborn, Burke, and Altwine each swiped one base for the Trojans.
- Marcus Hughes was 2-of-3 at the plate with a double and single for Mayville State. Anthony Villanueva added two hits. Satrom and DeLuca each registered a hit and an RBI. McCorrister and Ferrera each had a hit.
- MSU outhit DSU 8-5 in the game. The Trojans left 10 runners on base compared to the Comets eight runners left on base.
- Mayville State committed four defensive errors compared to Dakota State two errors.
- Will Clair (W, 3-2) earned the victory after tossing 8 2/3 innings on the pitching mound for DSU. He allowed two runs on eight hits and recorded four strikeouts. Cole Westerlund (S, 3) recorded the save as he pitched the final out in relief.
- Braxton Greenberg started the game for MSU. He worked for four inning sand allowed five walks and registered two strikeouts. He did not allow a hit. Conner Cory pitched three innings in relief, yielding two hits. Gregor Farquarson (L, 0-1) recorded the setback after tossing the bottom eighth, giving up three unearned runs on three hits.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 6, Mayville State (N.D.) 4 – FINAL
- After falling behind 2-0 in the four-game series finale, Dakota State scored six unanswered runs to grab a 6-2 lead after four innings. The Trojans held off the Comets to earn the doubleheader sweep.
- Hughes, DeLuca, and Marquez hit three straight singles to set up a bases loaded situation with no outs in the top second frame for MSU. Ferrera was hit-by-pitch and produced an RBI to score Hughes as the Comets grabbed a 1-0 lead.
- Mayville State made it 2-0 as Villanueva recorded an RBI sacrifice bunt to score DeLuca in the top second.
- The Trojans answered with two runs scored in the bottom third. Altwine and McDaniel led off with back-to-back singles. After a pitching change by the Comets, Altwine advanced to third base after MSU's wild pitch.
- Osborn, courtesy runner for McDaniel, swiped to second base while Altwine stole home as the Trojans trailed 2-1 in the bottom third.
- Angstadt followed up with an RBI single to score Osborn as DSU knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom third inning.
- DSU plated four runs in the bottom fourth inning to widen their lead. Hultgren reached on base by a walk followed by Pribyl's hit-by-pitch to advance Hultgren to second base.
- Trojan Burke recorded a fielder's choice bunt, while Hultgren reached safely after a defensive error caused by the Comets.
- MSU made two outs on the next play as Jackson O'Neal hit a fly out, while Hultgren was tagged out at home.
- Altwine produced an RBI single to score Pribyl as the Trojans earned a 3-2 lead (Altwine advanced to second base and Burke to third base after a defensive error by the Comets).
- Mayville State committed their third defensive error of the fourth inning as McDaniel reached safely on base (advanced to second base on the same play), allowing Altwine and Burke to score to balloon DSU's lead to 5-2.
- Dakota State made it 6-2 as Angstadt hit an RBI single to score Osborn in the bottom fourth.
- Carson Lundmark reached safely on base after DSU's defensive error with one out in the top fifth for MSU (advanced to second base on the same play). LaRocque followed up with a single to advance Lundmark to third base.
- McCorrister produced an RBI ground out to allow Lundmark to score as the Comets trimmed their deficit to 6-3 in the top fifth inning.
- The Comets mounted a comeback in the top seventh inning. LaRocque led off with a walk. McCorrister hit a single to advance Rochell, courtesy runner for LaRocque, to second base.
- Hughes hit a fielder's choice to advance Rochell to third base, while McCorrister was out at second base for MSU in the top ninth.
- The Trojans committed a passed ball to allow Rochell to score (Hughes advanced to second base) as the Comets trailed 6-4.
- Dakota State halted the Comets' scoring opportunity as the game was ended in a double play.
- McDaniel was 3-of-4 at the plate with three singles (Osborn scored twice) for the Trojans. Angstadt added two singles and two RBIs. Altwine tallied two singles and an RBI. He scored twice.
- Hultgren had a single and a walk for DSU. Osborn and Altwine each swiped one base.
- LaRocque and DeLuca each led the Comets with two singles. McCorrister added a hit and an RBI. Villanueva and Ferrera each collected an RBI.
- DSU tallied eight hits in the game, while MSU had six hits. The Comets recorded four defensive errors compared to the Trojans one error. Mayville State left 10 runners on base compared to Dakota State six runners on base.
- Grant Svikulis started the game on the pitching mound for the Trojans. He allowed two runs on three hits. Westerlund (W, 2-1) recorded the victory after tossing three innings in relief. He gave up an unearned run on one hit.
- Cameron Pitts worked for 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for Dakota State. Nicholi Arbach (S, 1) notched the save after pitching 1 1/3 innings, yielding an unearned run on two hits.
- Farquarson pitched the first 2 1/3 innings on the pitching mound for Mayville State. He allowed two runs on three hits. Ramsay Tallaferro worked for two outs in the third inning.
- Kaito Farquharson (L, 0-2) took the loss, despite giving up two runs (one unearned) for MSU. Gunner Thompson tossed two innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits. Trevor Schreiner worked the scoreless sixth inning in relief.
