MADISON, S.D. – Will Clair and Mitsuki Shimonishi combined to record 24 total strikeouts in a pair of complete games Saturday afternoon, propelling Dakota State (S.D.) to a doubleheader sweep over Presentation (S.D.) in the North Star Athletic Association baseball action at Flynn Field. The Trojans are currently on their eight-game home stand at Flynn Field.
The Trojans, who is the guest team for the four-game series where it was relocated to Flynn Field due to unplayable field conditions at Fossum Field in Aberdeen, extended their winning streak to five games to lift their overall record to 20-9 and 7-3 record in the North Star. Presentation fell to 4-28 overall record and 2-8 NSAA conference record.
Dakota State and Presentation conclude their conference four-game series Sunday with another doubleheader. First game is set for 12 p.m. at Flynn Field
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 7, Presentation (S.D.) 4 – FINAL
- Despite trailing 4-2 after five innings in the four-game series opener, Dakota State exploded for five runs in the top sixth inning and held on to the victory in the nine-inning contest.
- The Trojans grabbed its first lead of the game in the opening inning. Ryan McDaniel led off with a walk. Bennett Osborn, courtesy runner for McDaniel, swiped to second base. Noah Angstadt followed up with a single to advance Osborn to third baes.
- Kameron Bryant hit an RBI ground out to score Osborn to give DSU a 1-0 lead in the top first.
- Chris Burke led off the top third with a hit-by-pitch for the Trojans. He swiped to second base. McDaniel hit a ground out to advance Burke to third. Angstadt reached safely on base after PC's defensive error and swiped to second base.
- Mason Macaluso recorded a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU with two outs. Walker Hultgren produced an RBI hit-by-pitch to score Burke to extend The Trojans' lead to 2-0 in the top third.
- Matthew Womack blasted a solo home run with two outs in the bottom half of the third inning as PC trailed 2-1.
- The Saints plated three runs in the bottom fourth to overtake the lead from the Trojans, thanks to three straight hits. Mathias Gonzalez hit a lead-off single followed by Simon Virostek's double to advance Gonzalez to third base.
- Tomas Frutos hit an RBI single to score Gonzalez as the Saints tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom fourth. Tyus Stanley was hit-by-pitch to advance Frutos to second base (Sirostek remained at third). Francisco Avena hit a 2-RBI single to score Virostek and Furtos as PC earned a 4-2 lead.
- Dakota State stormed back to regain their lead in the top sixth frame, pouring in five runs with two outs. Seth Altwine reached on base by a walk with one out. He advanced to second base after Jackson O'Neal's ground out.
- Burke smashed a 2-run home run as DSU knotted the game at 4-4 in the top sixth.
- McDaniel reached safely on base after PC's defensive miscue in the top sixth. Angstadt was hit-by-pitch to advance courtesy runner Osborn to second base. Bryant followed up with a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans.
- Macaluso produced an RBI walk to score Osborn as DSU earned a 5-4 lead in the top sixth. Hultgren hit a 2-RBI single to score Angstadt and Bryant to balloon the Trojans' lead to 7-4.
- The Saints left one runner on base in the final inning as the Trojans secure the victory.
- Hultgren was 2-of-4 at the plate with two singles and drove in a game-high three runs for Dakota State. Altwine added two singles and two walks. Burke had a home run and tallied two RBIs.
- McDaniel reached on base by a walk twice for DSU. Angstadt added a single. Macaluso had a hit, RBI and recorded two walks. Altwine swiped two bases. Osborn, Angstadt, and Burke each recorded a stolen base.
- Womack was 2-of-4 at the plate with a home run, single, and an RBI for Presentation. Avena added two singles and two RBIs. Gonzalez and Trevor Ball each tallied two singles. Frutos had two hits, stolen base, and an RBI.
- PC outhit DSU 12-7 in the game. The Trojans left 12 runners on base compared to the Saints seven runners left on base.
- Clair (W, 4-2) tossed a complete game victory for DSU. He allowed four runs on 12 hits. He struck out 14 PC's batters, the highest strikeouts since Jason Hershfield with 13 strikeouts at Mount Marty (S.D.) on April 9, 2012.
- Peyton Rees (L, 0-7) took the loss on the pitching mound for PC. He pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up seven runs (one unearned) on three hits. He issued five walks and record three strikeouts. Cody Tomb worked the final out of the sixth inning in relief. Gavin Lim pitched three scoreless innings in relief.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 2, Presentation (S.D.) 0 – FINAL
- Dakota State used another strong pitching performance in the second game (seven-inning contest of the four-game series. Presentation was unable to get past third base once in the bottom second inning.
- The Trojans earned the first lead of the game in the top second frame. Macaluso was hit-by-pitch to kick off the inning, followed by Hultgren's single to advance Macaluso to second base.
- Burke recorded a sacrifice bunt to advance Macaluso and Hultgren one base for DSU in the top second. Altwine produced an RBI ground out to score Macaluso to give Trojans a 1-0 lead.
- Dakota State prevented Presentation to score in the bottom half of the second inning, despite a double by Ethan Leech. Lim, courtesy runner for Leech, advanced to third base after DSU's wild pitch with two outs.
- McDaniel reached on base by a walk with one out in the top fifth frame. Angstadt followed up with a ground out to advance courtesy runner Osborn to second base. Bryant recorded a walk.
- Macaluso hit an RBI single to score Osborn as DSU's lead grew to 2-0 in the top fifth inning with two outs (Bryant advanced to third base).
- Presentation left a runner on base in the final inning as DSU secured the doubleheader sweep.
- Hultgren was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles for Dakota State. Macaluso added a single and an RBI. McDaniel and Burke each had a hit. Altwine collected an RBI. Osborn and Macaluso each swiped one base.
- Leech recorded a double for Presentation. Cameron Snyder added a hit.
- Shimonishi (W, 4-1) pitched a complete game victory for the Trojans, recording a season-high 10 strikeouts. He limited the Saints to two hits.
- Tyler Clapp (L, 1-7) recorded the defeat for the Saints. He worked for six innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Blake Smith tossed a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
