MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) outscored Presentation (S.D.) 24-3 to earn another North Star Athletic Association baseball doubleheader sweep Sunday at Flynn Field, winning 13-0 in seven innings in the first game and 11-3 in the four-game series finale. The Trojans completed its first NSAA four-game series sweep in school history, their first conference four-game series sweep since Valley City State (N.D.) on April 2-3, 2010, in the former Dakota Athletic Conference.
Dakota State extended their winning streak to a season-high seven games, raising their overall record to 22-9. The Trojans posted its best 12-game NSAA conference start since the league was formed in 2013-14 with a 9-3 record (currently in a sole possession for second place in the NSAA conference standings). Presentation fell to 4-30 overall record and 2-10 NSAA conference record.
DSU poured in 33 runs and held PC to seven runs in the four-game series. Dakota State also struck out Presentation a total of 46 times during the four-game series.
The Trojans were the guest team in the series since it was scheduled to be played at Fossum Field but was formed to relocate to Flynn Field due to unplayable field conditions.
Dakota State wraps up their 10-game home stand at Flynn Field Tuesday afternoon. The Trojans are scheduled to host in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) in a nine-inning contest, with the first pitch set for 4 p.m.
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 13, Presentation (S.D.) 0 – FINAL/7 innings
- Dakota State exploded for eight runs in the opening inning of the first game (nine-inning contest), cruising to a 13-0 shutout victory.
- The first four batters reached safely on base to open the inning (walk by Ryan McDaniel, followed by back-to-back singles by Noah Angstadt and Kameron Bryant).
- Bryant produced an RBI single to score Bennett Osborn (courtesy runner for McDaniel) to give DSU a 1-0 lead in the top first.
- Mason Macaluso blasted a 3-run home run to widen the Trojans' lead to 4-0 with no outs in the top first.
- With bases loaded situation and one out for DSU in the top first frame (walk by Chris Burke, double by Seth Altwine, and hit-by-pitch on Jace Pribyl), Jackson O'Neal reached safely on base caused by PC's defensive error to allow Burke score for 5-0 DSU lead.
- After a pitching change by the Saints, McDaniel hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Altwine as Dakota State's lead grew to 6-0.
- The Trojans added a pair of runs after a pair of miscues committed by the Saints. Pribyl and O'Neal scored to balloon DSU's lead to 8-0 in the top first inning.
- Presentation was unable to convert their scoring chances in the bottom half of the first inning, despite leaving a bases loaded situation.
- Dakota State plated two more runs in the top third inning. Pribyl led off with a single and advanced to second base after PC's passed ball. DSU made it 9-0 after O'Neal hit an RBI single to score Pribyl.
- With courtesy runner on first base after McDaniel's fielder choice, Angstadt reached safely on base caused by Saints' defensive error and advanced Osborn to third base.
- Bryant added an RBI single to score Osborn as Dakota State ballooned their lead to 10-0 in the top third with one out.
- Burke smashed a lead-off home run in the top fourth inning to put DSU up 11-0.
- Burke added another home run in the top fifth inning, drilling a 2-run home run to extend DSU's lead to 13-0.
- The Trojans ended the game in mercy rule by seven innings.
- Burke led DSU with two home runs, two walks and drove in three runs. Altwine added a double and single. Macaluso had a home run and three RBIs. Bryant tallied two singles and two RBIs.
- O'Neal recorded a single and drove in two runs for Dakota State. Angstadt had a hit and an RBI. McDaniel reached on base by a walk twice and collected an RBI. Pribyl recorded a single and scored twice.
- Angstadt, Bryant, and Altwine each swiped one base for the Trojans.
- PC's starting batters did not record a hit in the game, limiting with four hits from the bench in the game. Keagan Niedermeyer hit a double. Austin Bateman, Louis Martinez, and Wolf'Don Thorson each added a single.
- The Saints left 10 runners on base compared to the Trojans eight runners left on base. PC committed six defensive errors in the game.
- Nicholi Arbach (W, 3-0) earned his second win in the same week on the pitching mound for Dakota State. He tossed six innings and limited the Saints to four hits. Arbach struck out a season-high 11 batters. Landry Knight pitched a shutout seventh inning in relief and recorded two strikeouts.
- Michael Wishowski (L, 0-4) recorded the setback after working for one out for Presentation. He allowed eight runs (one unearned) on four hits. Samuel Garner and Ryan Powers each worked in relief.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 11, Presentation (S.D.) 3 – FINAL
- Dakota State used a seven-run second inning production to cruise to a four-game series sweep of Presentation.
- The Trojans opened the top second frame with bases loaded situation after Walker Hultgren led off with a single, followed by Burke's walk and a hit-by-pitch on Atlwine.
- Pribyl recorded an RBI walk to score Hultgren for DSU first lead of the game at 1-0 in the top second.
- O'Neal followed up with an RBI ground out to score Burke to make it 2-0 in favor of the Trojans. McDaniel hit an RBI single to score Atlwine as their lead grew tot 3-0 in the top second with no outs.
- Dakota State increased their lead to 4-0 as Bryant hit an RBI single to score Pribyl.
- Macaluso capped the second inning offensive explosion with a 3-run home run to widen Dakota State's lead to 7-0.
- The Trojans added four runs in the top fourth inning for an 11-0 lead, caused by a pair of PC's defensive miscues.
- Matthew Womack hit a single, followed by another single by Mathias Gonzalez in the bottom fourth for the Saints. Simon Virostek reached safely on base caused by DSU's defensive error for a bases loaded situation.
- Tyus Stanley hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Womack as the Saints trailed 11-1 with two outs in the bottom fourth frame.
- Stanley added a two-out 2-RBI double in the bottom sixth inning as the Saints cut the Trojans' lead to 11-3.
- Dakota State secured the game by scoring double digit runs for the second straight game.
- Macaluso hit a home run, single and collected three RBIs for the Trojans. Bryant also went 3-of-4 at the plate with a double, two singles and an RBI. Hultgren tallied two singles and scored twice.
- Altwine had a single, stolen base, and scored twice for DSU. McDaniel had a hit and an RBI. Angstadt had a hit. Pribyl and O'Neal each tallied an RBI for Dakota State.
- Stanley led the Saints with a double and drove in three runs. Womack added two singles. John Froese had a single.
- DSU outhit PC 10-6 in the game. Both teams left five runners on base.
- JD Kirchner (W, 3-3) earned the victory after working for three innings for Dakota State. He yielded the Saints to one hit and recorded five strikeouts. Devin DeBoer, Carver Hultgren, Kahlil Tilbury, and David Kirby each worked one inning in relief.
- Francisco Avena (L, 2-5) notched the setback after tossing two innings for Presentation. He allowed seven runs on six hits. Tynan Preece and Thorson each worked for two innings in relief. RJ Galvez pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
