YANKTON, S.D. – Mount Marty (S.D.) racked up eight runs combined in the seventh and eighth innings to pull away past Dakota State (S.D.) in a nine-inning contest Tuesday evening at Bob Tereshinski Stadium at Riverside Park. The game was originally scheduled to play at Flynn Field, but wet conditions had prompted to relocate the contest at MMU.
Dakota State's season-high seven-game winning streak came to an end, falling to 22-10 overall record. Mount Marty lifted their overall record to 24-8.
DSU resumes to North Star Athletic Association action Friday and Saturday, visiting Viterbo (Wis.) in a four-game series. The doubleheader kicks off on Friday at 1 p.m. at Outdoor Athletics Complex. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12 noon.
Mount Marty (S.D.) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL
- Mount Marty held Dakota State to four singles in the game. The Lancers held on to a slim 1-0 lead through six innings before scoring two runs in the seventh and six runs in the eighth to secure the victory.
- Kiko Nunez blasted a lead-off home run in the bottom second frame to grab the first lead at 1-0 for the Lancers.
- The Trojans prevented the Lancers to score in the bottom fourth inning with bases loaded. Cole Westerlund retired the final two batters of the bottom fourth with a pair of strikeouts.
- MMU produced a pair of doubles in the bottom seventh to plate two runs. Jet Weber drilled a double with one out. Zane Salley followed up with a single to advance Weber to third base.
- Billy Hancock hit a 2-RBI double to score Weber and Salley to extend the Lancers' lead to 3-0 in the bottom seventh frame.
- Dakota State ended its scoring drought with a run scored in the top eighth inning. Ryan McDaniel hit a single with one out. Noah Angstadt reached safely on base caused by MMU's defensive error (advanced to second base on the same play) and advanced courtesy runner Bennett Osborn to third base.
- Kameron Bryant followed up with a walk to set up a base loaded with one out situation for DSU in the top eighth. Mason Macaluso hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Osborn as the Trojans trailed 3-1.
- DSU was unable to add more runs as the Lancers ended the top eighth inning with a double play, defensively.
- Mount Marty poured in six runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning to stretch their lead. After Evan Bock's walk, Nathan Robertson hit a 2-run home run to balloon MMU's lead to 5-1.
- With bases loaded situation with one out, the Lancers added four more runs thanks to Caid Koletzly's 2-RBI single followed by Josh Roeman's 2-RBI double to make it 9-1.
- Dakota State left bases full when the game ended, securing the victory for Mount Marty.
- McDaniel, Angstadt, Chris Burke and Seth Altwine each recorded a single for DSU. Bryant and Altwine each reached on base by a walk twice. McDaniel and Burke each added a walk.
- Macaluso produced an RBI for the Trojans.
- Weber and Roeman each tallied three hits for Mount Marty. Nunez and Robertson each went 2-of-4 at the plate. Hancock, Koletzly, Roeman, and Robertson each collected two RBIs.
- Mount Marty outhit Dakota State 13-4 in the game. Both teams left 10 runners on base.
- Westerlund (L, 2-2) took the defeat on the pitching mound for DSU. He worked for four innings and allowed one run on five hits. He struck out Mount Marty six times. Noah Daugherty, Grant Svikulis, and Kahlil Tilbury each pitched in relief.
- Jared Miller (W, 1-0) earned the victory after tossing six innings for MMU. He limited the Trojans to two hits and registered six strikeouts. Ben Bohlmann, Zane Pollon, Gavin Schultz, and Heston Williams each worked in relief.
