FOREST CITY, Iowa – All nine Dakota State (S.D.) batters recorded a hit to stay alive in the North Star Athletic Association Baseball Postseason Tournament, eliminating the defeating league tournament champion Mayville State (N.D.) 13-5 Saturday at Forest City High School Baseball Field. The Trojans also shattered another single season record during the first inning of the game.
Dakota State, second-seeded in the NSAA postseason tournament, improved their overall record to 30-17, their most overall victories since the 2007 season with a program history 38 victories. It was the first North Star Athletic Association postseason victory for the Trojans, as well as the first conference postseason tournament win since the 2013 when DSU defeated Valley City State (N.D.) in the opening round of the NAIA Unaffiliated Tournament.
Mayville State, sixth-seeded in the conference tournament and won the tournament last season, ends their season at 16-25 overall record.,
Dakota State continues their postseason run in the North Star Baseball Tournament Sunday morning. The Trojans take on fourth-seeded and host team Waldorf (Iowa), who fell to top-seeded Bellevue (Neb.) 13-0 in seven innings Saturday, in another elimination game. First pitch is set for 9 a.m.
The winner of that game will play another elimination game Sunday evening at 7 p.m. against the 12 p.m. winner of fifth-seeded Valley City State (N.D.) and seventh-seeded Viterbo (Wis.).
Dakota State (S.D.) 13, Mayville State (N.D.) 5 – FINAL
- Dakota State used a fast start in the opening inning, thanks to a new single-season record by Mason Macaluso. With Noah Angstadt on first base with one out, Kameron Bryant hit a single to advance Angstadt to second base.
- Macaluso blasted a 3-run home run to score Angstadt and Bryant to put DSU up 3-0 in the top first inning. Macaluso collected 3 RBIs, where set a new single season record of 58 RBIs (previously held bon Anyelo Roman with 55 RBIs in 2012).
- It was Macaluso 12th home run this season (third most in a single season currently) for the Trojans, tying for third most all-time home runs in school history with 18 home runs (Shea Tonkin from 2005-07).
- Dakota State made it 4-0 as Walker Hultgren followed up with a solo home run in the top first with one out. It was his fifth home run this season for the Trojans.
- The Trojans extended their lead to 5-0 after plating one run in the top second inning. Jace Pribyl led off with a walk. McDaniel drilled a double with one out to advance Pribyl to third base.
- Angstadt produced an RBI ground out to score Pribyl to widen DSU's lead by five runs in the top second.
- Dakota State continued to stretch their lead after scoring two runs in the top fourth inning. Seth Altwine led off with a double. Pribyl was hit-by-pitch. Josh Van Beek followed up with a walk to set up a bases loaded situation.
- Angstadt hit a 2-RBI single to score Altwine and Pribyl to balloon DSU's lead to 7-o in the top fourth.
- Mayville State ended its scoring drought with a run scored in the bottom half of the fourth inning, highlighted by a lead-off double by Carson Lundmark. Jared McCorrister hit an RBI single with one out as the Comets trailed 7-1.
- Dakota State produced three straight hits by scoring two runs in the top fifth inning. Chris Burke hit a single, followed by Altwine's double to advance Burke to third base.
- Pribyl smashed a 2-RBI double to score Burke and Altwine as DSU's lead grew to 9-1 in the top fifth frame.
- Tyler Ferrera led off the bottom fifth with a single, followed by Anthony Villanueva's hit-by-pitch in the bottom fifth. Lundmark followed up with an RBI double to score Ferrera as MSU cut DSU's lead to 9-2.
- Alan LaRocque added an RBI single to score Lundmark as Mayville State reduced their deficit to 9-3 in the bottom fifth.
- Burke hit a lead-off home run in the top seventh inning to make it 10-3 in favor of the Trojans. It was his sixth home run this season.
- The Comets scored twice in the bottom fifth inning, caused by a pair of defensive miscues by Dakota State (DSU led 10-5).
- Dakota State added three runs in the final inning. Van Beek led off with a double. McDaniel followed up with an RBI single to score Van Beek to make it 11-5 DSU.
- With runners on first and second bases for DSU, Bryant reached safely on base caused by MSU's fielding error and allowed courtesy runner Bennett Osborn (for McDaniel) to score for 12-5 lead.
- After Hultgren's walk to set up a bases loaded and one out situation, the Trojans made it 13-5 as Burke recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Angstadt to balloon DSU's lead to 13-5.
- The Comets left a runner on base when the game ended, securing the victory for the Trojans.
- Dakota State outhit Mayville State 16-10 in the game. The Trojans left 12 runners on base compared to the Comets 10 runners left on base.
- Altwine was 3-of-5 at the plate with two doubles, single, walk, and scored two runs for DSU. Macaluso had a home run, single, and drove in three runs. Angstadt had a single and three RBIs.
- McDaniel collected a double, single and an RBI for the Trojans. Bryant tallied three singles and an RBI. Burke recorded a home run, single and two RBIs. Van Beek had a double, two walks and a run scored. Pribyl tallied a double, walk, and two RBIs.
- Lundmark led the Comets' attack with two doubles, one single and an RBI. LaRocque and McCorrister each had two hits and an RBI. Adam Senden recorded a hit and an RBI.
- Mitsuki Shimonishi (W, 6-3) earned the victory after tossing six innings for Dakota State, allowing three runs on six hits. He recorded six strikeouts. Kahlil Tilbury worked for three innings in relief, giving up two unearned runs on four hits. He registered four strikeouts.
- Matt Johnston (L, 2-1) took the setback after tossing 1 1/3 innings for Mayville State. He gave up five runs on four hits. Connor Cory worked for 4 2/3 innings in relief, allowing four runs on six hits and recorded five strikeouts. Gregor Farquarson and Calvin Watkins also pitched in relief.
