(RV) Trojans win first volleyball road contest, defeat (RV) Doane (Neb.) in four

CRETE, Neb. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned to Midwest region Saturday morning after playing their season-opening tournament in Florida.  The Trojans visited host-team Doane (Neb.) in the first match of the triangular, holding on to a 3-1 match victory (25-17, 25-19, 10-25, 25-21) at George and Sally Haddix Recreation Complex.  It was the eighth straight win for DSU in the matches versus the Great Plains Athletic Conference, dating back to last season.

DSU earned its second win this season over a team that received votes recognition in the NAIA's Top 25 Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 preseason poll this season.  The Trojans – who also received votes to the national poll – lifted their overall record to 4-1, while the Tigers fell to 2-4 overall record.

The Trojans earned its first victory over Doane in the all-time series, ending their six-match losing skid in the series meeting (1-6 record).

Dakota State takes on MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) in the second match of the triangular.

  • Both teams went through seven ties in the first 24 rallies, tying the first set at 12-12.
  • Dakota State went on a 5-1 scoring tear to open a 17-13 lead, capped by Sydney Schell's kill. 
  • The Trojans hit an astounding .500 with 17 kills and committed just one attack error in 32 swings, fueling toa a 1-0 match lead after winning 25-17.
  • Doane hit .333 in the opening set with 12 kills and three errors in 27 attempts.
  • Trailing 3-2 in the second set, a block by Maddi Langerock and Hannah Viet followed by Macy Wetsch's service ace to spark DSU's 5-0 scoring run for a 7-3 lead.
  • Jamie Renshawn smashed a kill as the Tigers trimmed DSU's lead to 9-6 in the second set.  Dakota State then stormed with an 11-4 surge for the biggest lead of the second set at 20-10, highlighted by a block by Brooklyn Grage and Viet (their second block together during the scoring run).
  • Doane scoring six straight points to trim DSU's lead to 20-16.  The Trojans never trailed for the rest of the second set, scoring the final two points by DU's error for a 25-19 victory.
  • Dakota State took advantage of Doane's 12 attack errors in the second set to extend their match lead to 2-0.  The Trojans hit .179 (8 kills with 3 errors in 28 attempts) and held the Tigers to minus .023 hitting percentage.
  • Doane scored the first seven points of the third set to grab a 7-0 lead and never looked back.  The Tigers cruised to a 25-10 set three victory, extending the match into the fourth set.
  • DSU was held to negative .070 hitting percentage in the third set (8 kills with 11 errors in 43 swings).  DU registered .300 hitting efficiency (10 kills with 1 error in 30 attempts).
  • Down 2-1 in the fourth set, the Trojans roared with a 7-0 scoring run highlighted by back-to-back service aces by Wetsch followed by a kill by Viet for an 8-2 lead.
  • Viet added a kill – assisted by Langerock – to give DSU its largest lead of the fourth set at 19-10.   
  • With DSU leading 21-14, DU went on a 5-0 scoring tear to cut their deficit to 21-19.
  • Schell scored the final three points of the fourth set with back-to-back kills followed by a service ace for a 25-21 victory and secured the victory for Dakota State.
  • The Trojans outhit the Tigers 16-11 in the fourth set. 
  • Schell posted a double-double of 17 kills and 13 digs for Dakota State.  She registered three service aces.  Viet added a career-high 15 kills and hit .367 in the match.  She had six blocks.  Riley Grandpre and Grage each tallied five kills.  Grage recorded five blocks.
  • Langerock produced a double-double of 39 set assists and 12 digs for DSU.  Peyton Groft led the Trojans defense with 17 digs.  VonnaGail Schlechter collected 10 digs. 
  • Taylor Sluka led the Tigers with 15 kills and hit .361.  Kirsten added eight kills.  Cassy Tompkin had seven kills.  Renshawn had a double-double of 33 set assists and 20 digs.   She had four service aces.
  • MacKenzie Painter recorded 13 digs for Doane.  Harper Case had 12 digs.
  • DSU outhit DU 49-44 in the match.  The Trojans hit .169 (24 attack errors in 148 swings) compared to Tigers .179 hitting efficiency (19 errors in 140 attempts).
  • Dakota State registered eight service aces while Doane had seven service aces.  The Trojans tallied seven blocks compared to the Tigers six blocks.
