MADISON, S.D. – After playing 14 straight matches away from DSU Fieldhouse, Dakota State (S.D.) played its first home match of the season Wednesday in the North Star Athletic Association opener versus nationally ranked Bellevue (Neb.). The Bruins swept the Trojans in three straight sets in DSU's home opener (25-11, 26-24, 25-19).
Dakota State, which is listed in the receiving votes section of the NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll for the seventh straight appearance, fell to 7-8 overall record and 0-1 NSAA conference record. Bellevue, who dropped three spots from No. 12 to No. 15 this morning in the national poll, improved to 9-5 overall record and 1-0 NSAA conference record.
Both teams will meet for the second meeting in October.
Prior to the season-opening home match, former DSU volleyball player Maddie Polzin and senior Hannah Viet were honored as NAIA All-America recipients in 2021.
Dakota State continues their season-long five-match home stand Thursday evening, hosting Morningside (Iowa) in a non-conference contest. The junior varsity match is set for 5 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 7 p.m.

Bellevue raced to a 7-1 opening lead, forcing Dakota State to call its first timeout.- The Bruins continued its scoring surge, widening their lead to 17-3 in the first set. Sierra Athen tallied four kills during the opening's outburst.
- BU cruised past DSU in the first set 25-11, thanks to their .357 hitting percentage with 16 kills and committed just one attack error in 42 swings. DSU struggled offensively by hitting .068 (8 kills with 5 errors in 44 attempts).
- The Trojans kicked off the second set with a 5-1 lead, capped by a block each from Hanna Viet and Riley Grandpre.
- The Bruins rallied back to knot the second set at 9-9 after Athen's kill.
- Bellevue continued its scoring run, stretching to 13-5 run to grab a 14-10 lead after Olivia Galas' kill.
After DSU timeout, the Trojans answered with a 6-2 run to tie the second set at 16-16. - The Bruins earned a set point opportunity after DSU committed an attack error at 24-23.
- Dakota State saved the set point as Bellevue committed a service error, recording the 10th tie of the second set.
- Athen smashed a kill followed by DSU's attack error gave BU a 2-0 match lead after winning the second set at 26-24.
- Dakota State and Bellevue went through 10 ties and five lead changes in the second set.
- The Trojans outhit the Bruins 14-12 in the second set. DSU hit .106 (9 errors in 47 attempts) and held BU to .083 hitting percentage (8 errors in 48 swings).
- Bellevue sprinted to a 5-0 lead in the third set before Dakota State rallied back. The Trojans used a 6-1 run to tie at 6-6 after a block by Sydney Schell and Hannah Viet.
Both teams went through a see-saw battle in the third set, featuring eight ties and two lead changes before Bellevue pulled away late.- Schell smashed a kill as the Trojans tied the third set at 17-17.
- Bellevue went on a 5-0 scoring tear and never looked back as they concluded the match with an 8-2 run. The Bruins secured the match victory after winning 25-19.
- BU outhit DSU 16-12 in the third set. The Bruins hit .217 (6 errors in 46 swings) compared to the Trojans .133 hitting percentage (6 errors in 45 attempts).
- Brooklyn Grage led the Trojans with 10 kills. Madalyn Groft tallied 13 digs, 9 set assists, and 8 kills. Schell recorded six kills and 11 digs. Viet had five kills and four blocks.
- Maddi Langerock contributed a double-double of 16 set assists and 10 digs for DSU. VonnaGail Schlechter had eight digs.
- Peyton Groft led Dakota State with a match-high 21 digs. She accumulated 1,960 digs, moving to third all-time in program history (passed Ashley Brassfield with 1,958 digs all-time from 2001-05).
- Bellevue's balanced offense attack was led by Athen with 12 kills. Jacki Apel added seven kills. Sidney Sledge had six kills. Allie Kerns and Haley Fleischman each tallied five kills. Rosa Reed-Bouley had four kills.
- Galas produced 32 set assists, 18 digs, and five kills for the Bruins. Taylan Keefer collected 18 digs and six assists.
- Sledge recorded 17 digs for BU. Kerns added 13 digs. Fleischman, Apel, Galas, and Kerns each registered two blocks.
- Bellevue hit .213 in the match (44 kills with 15 errors in 136 swings) compared to Dakota State .103 hitting efficiency (34 kills with 20 errors in 136 attempts).
The Trojans were 96.4 percent from the serving line (56 serves with one ace and two errors). The Bruins recorded a 95.9 service percentage in 74 serves (2 aces and 3 errors).- DSU recorded 5.5 team blocks. BU had four blocks.
