FOREST CITY, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) jumped to a 10-0 lead Saturday late afternoon in a non-North Star Athletic Association football action with host-team Waldorf (Iowa) at Bolstorff Field. The Warriors scored 35 unanswered points, prevailing to a 42-17 victory over the Trojans to stay undefeated this season.
Dakota State, who returned to action for the first time since Sept. 3, fell to 1-2 overall record. Waldorf (Iowa), receiving votes in the latest NAIA Football Coaches' Top 25 national poll, lifted their overall record to 4-0.
Both teams will meet for the second time last this season, in the regular-season finale at Trojan Field in the North Star conference contest on Nov. 12.
FIRST QUARTER
- Waldorf was forced to punt on the opening drive of the game on their 31-yard line. The Trojans blocked WU's punt and was returned by Gustavo Bonilla to WU's 23-yard line with 13 minutes, 36 seconds on the clock.
- Tyce Ortman rushed for three straight plays, setting up a scoring drive for the Trojans. After a 14-yard rush on the second play, Ortman rushed for a 3-yard touchdown to give DSU a 6-0 lead with 12:19 on the clock.
- Noah Karwacki followed up with a successful PAT extra-point kick to make it 7-0.
- Waldorf recorded eight plays for 40 yards in 3:44 on the ensuing possession and was forced to punt with 8:33 to go in the first quarter.
- The Trojans answered with eight plays for 42 yards in 4:11 on the next possession. DSU committed a turnover as the Warriors intercepted Zach Brooks' pass on WU's 8-yard line with 4:11 to go in first.
- The Warriors were forced to punt for the third straight possession as the Trojans began their drive on the 50-yard line with 2:27 on the clock.
- DSU extended their lead to 10-0 as Karwacki hit a 49-yard field goal as the first quarter expired.
- Dakota State outgained Waldorf 83-54 in the first 15 minutes of the game.
SECOND QUARTER
- Waldorf snapped their scoring drought as they used a pair of 40-plus passing yards plays with Jordan Cooper and Malik Adams to start the second quarter.
- Cooper connected to Adams for 40 yards from WU's 13-yard line to DSU's 47-yard line. Cooper connected to Adams for the second time, this time a 48-yard touchdown pass with less than 13 minutes to go in the second quarter.
- Connor Parker added the PAT extra point kick as the Warriors trailed 10-7.
- DSU was forced to punt on the ensuing possession. WU went on to score on their second straight drive in the second quarter.
- Waldorf used six plays for 80 yards in 3:44 as Cooper threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Adams. Parker followed up with the PAT extra point kick as WU grabbed a 14-10 lead with 7:06 to go before halftime.
- Dakota State followed up with eight plays for 35 yards in 3:15 on the next possession. The Trojans turned the ball over with less than four minutes to go in the second quarter.
- After a punt each by the Warriors and the Trojans, WU started their drive on their own 19-yard line with 1:19 left in the second.
- Waldorf used two straight passing plays of 18- and 21-yards to DSU's 30-yard line and called a timeout with 15 seconds left.
- After the timeout, Cooper connected to Sam Huntley for a 30-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds left. Parker hit the PAT extra point kick to widen their lead to 21-10.
- Waldorf outscored Dakota State 21-0 in the second quarter. WU outgained DSU 249-53 in the final 15 minutes of the first half.
THIRD QUARTER
- DSU started the third quarter with a turnover as WU Tyler Dennis intercepted Zach Brooks' pass at DSU's 42-yard line and returned it for three yards to DSU's 39-yard line with 14:08 on the clock.
- The Warriors would answer by using nine plays for 39 yard in 5:06 as Taye Buchanan rushed for a 6-yard touchdown. Parker added the PAT extra-point kick as the Warriors' lead grew to 28-10 with 9:02 to go in the third.
- Dakota State was held to 12 yards in the third quarter, trailing 28-10 to Waldorf. The Warriors started their next drive after DSU's punt with 7:27 on the clock and moved the ball to the DSU's 9-yard line by the end of the third quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Waldorf extended their lead to 35-10 to start the fourth quarter. Cooper rushed for a 2-yard touchdown followed by Parker's PAT extra point kick with 14:50 remaining in the game. The Warriors used 15 plays for 80 yards in 7:37 in the scoring drive.
- Dakota State ended its scoring drought on the ensuing drive. The Trojans used 13 plays for 84 yards in 7:52 as Ortman rushed for a 1-yard touchdown. Karwacki's PAT extra-point kick was good as the Trojans trimmed WU's lead to 35-17.
- DSU committed a turnover with less than four minutes left as WU's MaCoy Yeakel returned a 40-yard interception to DSU's 5-yard line.
- Cooper followed up with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Huntley as Waldorf made it 41-17 with 3:27 left. Parker added the PAT extra-point kick as their lead grew to 42-17.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Ortman rushed 11 times for 51 yards with two touchdowns for Dakota State. Brooks threw for 75 yards and ran 13 times for 46 yards. Gavin Holland rushed eight times for 26 yards.
- Cameron McKeon added 61 passing yards for DSU.
- Dylan Johnson registered a 23-yard reception for the Trojans. Austin Lake added a 22-yard catch. Cooper McDermott had an 18-yard reception. Cole Sylliaasen and Michael Hybertson each had two catches for 15 yards.
- Karwacki recorded four punts for 191 yards, averaging a season-high 47.8 yards per punt. Two of his punts were inside the 20-yard line. He also registered four kick-offs for 206 yards (51.5 yards per kick-off).
- Jeremiah 'JJ' Beck led the Trojans' defense with 11 tackles (6 solo, 5 assist). Bonilla added seven tackles. Jay Skogerboe, Kani Johnson, Mahdi Benalshiakh, and Devonte Murphy each recorded six tackles. Cody Brown had a quarterback sack for seven yards loss.
- Cooper completed 22 passes in 30 attempts for 362 yards with four touchdowns for Waldorf. Adams had six receptions for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Huntley added 10 catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
- Taye Buchanan ran 15 times for 43 yards with a touchdown for WU. Cooper added nine rushes for 37 yards and a touchdown.
- Dennis had two interceptions for the Warriors. Twon Collymore and Yeakel each added an interception.
- Tyler Hopp and Austin Erdmann each collected six tackles for Waldorf. Edjuan Works and Nico Morasco each had five tackles. Erdman had quarterback sack.
TEAM COMPARISONS
- Waldorf racked up 460 total offensive yards compared to Dakota State 264 total offensive yards. The Warriors had 370 passing yards and held the Trojans to 136 passing yards.
- DSU outrushed WU 128-90.
- Waldorf collected 24 first downs, while Dakota State had 18 first downs.
- The Warriors converted 10-of-16 on third-down conversions. The Trojans are 5-of-13 on third-down situations.
- WU maintained possession for 33 minutes, 22 seconds. DSU recorded a time of possession of 26 minutes, 38 seconds.
UP NEXT
The Trojans return home next Saturday as they host Iowa Wesleyan in another non-NSAA contest. The annual Trojan Days homecoming football game is set for 4 p.m. at Trojan Field, with the tailgate slated to start at 12 noon located on the east side of the Trojan Field's parking lot area.
