(RV) Trojans fall short to No. 23 Dordt (Iowa) in four sets

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) faced the NAIA's nationally ranked team from the Great Plains Athletic Conference for the second time on the same day Friday evening in the College of Saint Mary (Neb.) Labor Day Classic at United Sports Academy.  After the Trojans took a 1-0 lead (25-22 in set one), No. 23 Dordt (Iowa) took the next three sets (25-21, 25-6, 25-21) to hold off DSU in four sets.

Dakota State, receiving votes in the NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, evened their overall record to 4-4.  Dordt lifted their overall record to 4-2.

DSU wraps up the tournament play Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. versus No. 10 ranked Concordia (Neb.).  The Trojans face Hastings (Neb.) in the final match of the tournament at 5 p.m.

(23) Dordt (Iowa) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL (22-25, 25-21, 25-6, 25-21)

  • Dakota State kicked off the first set with a 4-1 lead, capped by Maddi Langerock's service ace.  The Defenders answered with a 6-0 lead to grab a 7-4 lead.
  • DSU then went on a 9-2 scoring tear, capped by a kill by Sydney Schell for a 13-9 lead.
  • The Defenders saved three set point opportunities, trimming DSU's lead to 24-22.  An attack error by DU secured the first set victory for Dakota State at 25-22 and 1-0 match lead.
  • The Trojans outhit the Defenders 15-9 in the first set.  DSU hit .118 (9 errors in 51 swings) compared to DU .083 hitting percentage (9 kills with 5 errors in 48 attempts).
  • Dakota State and Dordt wen through a see-saw battle in the second set.  With Dordt leading 22-21, the Defenders scored the final three points to even the match at 1-1.  Brenna Krommendyk smashed a kill to give Dordt a 25-21 set two victory.
  • DU outhit DSU 18-13 in the second set.  The Defenders hit .405 (3 errors in 37 attempts), while the Trojans hit .289 (2 errors in 38 attempts).
  • The Defenders dominated the third set, holding the Trojans to six points to grab a 2-1 match lead after a 25-6 victory.  Dordt hit an impressive .619 (14 kills with 1 error in 21 swings).  DSU was held to minus .200 hitting efficiency (2 kills with 7 errors in 25 attempts).
  • Dakota State and Dordt went on a see-saw battle in the fourth set.  Tied at 21-21, the Defenders closed the match by scoring the final four points to earn a 25-21 victory.
  • DU outhit DSU 14-11 in the fourth set. 
  • Schell led the Trojans' offense attack with 14 kills.  She had a double-double with 10 digs.  Madalyn Groft 19 set assists, five digs, and six kills.
  • Brooklyn Grage had a career-high 11 kills for Dakota State.  Vanessa Schroeder added five kills.  Langerock posted a double-double of 12 assists and 16 digs. 
  • Peyton Groft led DSU's defense with 29 digs.  VonnaGail Schlechter added 10 digs. 
  • Ellie Voss paced the Defenders with 12 kills.  Brenna Krommendyk added 10 kills and hit .556.  Sophie Johnson had a double-double of 24 kills and 12 digs.  Megan Raszler had 25 set assists and eight digs.
  • Madison Vis led Dordt with 30 digs.
  • Dordt outhit Dakota State 55-41 in the match.  The Defenders hit .256 (15 errors in 156 swings) compared to the Trojans .110 hitting percentage (23 errors in 163 attempts).
