MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) forced Waldorf (Iowa) to 33 turnovers and held them to 26.1 percent field goal shooting, rolling to their seventh straight North Star Athletic Association women's basketball victory by the score of 76-38 at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans stayed undefeated at home with a 7-0 record, recording their 38th victory in the last 41 home contests.
DSU and WU met six days later after their last meeting, kicking off their second half portion of the North Star basketball schedule. The Trojans competed their season series sweep, earning their 17th win (and ninth straight victory) in the last 19 meetings with the Warriors.
Dakota State, receiving votes (RV) in the latest NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, raised their overall record to 17-5 and 7-1 record in the league. Waldorf dropped their fifth straight game, falling to 4-14 overall record and 2-6 NSAA conference record.
Head coach David Moe was honored after the completion of the game for his 100th career coaching win when the Trojans defeated Mayville State (N.D.) 58-56 in overtime in Mayville, N.D., on Jan. 13.
DSU continues their four-game home stand Saturday afternoon in another North Star conference game, hosting Viterbo (Wis.). Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
(RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 76, Waldorf (Iowa) 38 – FINAL
Dakota State opened the game with a layup by Elsie Aslesen (assisted by Courtney Menning) for a 2-0 lead with nine minutes and thirty-nine seconds on the clock.- Both teams struggled to find their offense rhythm, going scoreless for nearly four minutes. The Warriors ended their scoring drought with a 3-pointer by Kinsey Tweedy (assisted by Edosa Ogbemudia) for a 3-2 lead with 5:43 left in the first period.
- Waldorf's lead was short-lived as Dakota State answered on the next possession with a 4-3 lead after Savannah Walsdorf's layup (assisted by Caitlin Dyer) with 5:37 on the clock.
- Leading 11-9, Dakota State closed the first quarter with a 7-0 scoring run in the final 1:12. Dyer hit a layup to extend DSU's lead to 18-9.
- Waldorf committed 11 turnovers in the first ten minutes of the game compared to Dakota State one turnover.
- The Trojans' lead grew to 26-14 after Menning's basket, forcing the Warriors to call a timeout with 6:14 on the clock in the second quarter.
- Dakota State outscored Waldorf 15-9 in the second period, ballooning their lead to 33-18 by halftime.
DSU shot 42.4 percent from the field in the first half (14-of-33 field goals) compared to WU 30 percent (6-of-20 field goals). The Warriors committed 20 turnovers in the first twenty minutes.- The Trojans began their third period with a 17-3 outburst, capped by Aslesen's layup (assisted by Menning) for a 50-21 lead with 3:23 to go in the third quarter.
- Waldorf closed the third period with a 7-1 scoring run, highlighted by Sandra Christian's 3-pointer (assisted by Lindsay Field) to trim DSU's lead to 51-28.
- DSU outscored WU 18-10 in the third quarter.
- The Trojans maintained their control, recording their biggest lead of the game at 76-38 after Tabor Teel's layup with less than 45 seconds left in the game.
- Dakota State outscored Waldorf 25-10 in the fourth quarter.
- Walsdorf led DSU with 14 points on her 6-of-10 field goals and grabbed four rebounds. She stole the ball five times. Aselsen and Slattery each added 12 points. Aslesen had six rebounds and three blocks. Slattery collected four rebounds. Menning stole the ball four times and scored four points.
- Mackley registered nine points and two steals for the Trojans. Dyer added eight points, two assists, and two steals. Olivia Ritter also had eight points and two rebounds. Sidney Fick hit game-highs 11 rebounds and five blocked shots (career-high). Teel scored five points.
- Bethany Rehse led the Warriors with nine points and five rebounds. Ogbemudia had eight points off the bench. Field had five points and seven rebounds. Christian had six points and four rebounds.
Tweedy had six points and six rebounds for WU. Alyah Abrahamson dished out four assists.- Dakota State shot 28-of-66 from the field (42.4 percent) compared to Waldorf 12-of-46 field goals. The Warriors were 5-of-16 from the 3-point line, while the Trojans were 3-of-24 3-pointers.
- DSU converted 17-of-22 from the free-throw line. WU was 9-of-18 from the free-throw line.
- Waldorf outrebounded Dakota State 42-37.
- The Trojans outscored the Warriors 10-0 in fast-break points, 27-2 in points off turnovers, 50-12 inside the paint, and 35-10 in bench points.
