MOORE, Okla. – Dakota State (S.D.) outscored Randall (Okla.) 22-3 Tuesday afternoon to collect their second doubleheader sweep of the season at Randall Baseball Field. The Trojans defeated the Saints 15-1 in the first game, followed by a 7-2 victory in the second game.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 9-12 before their North Star Athletic Association opener this weekend. Randall fell to 1-13 overall record.
DSU prepares for the NSAA conference play Friday and Saturday, playing in a four-game series at Waldorf (Iowa). Stay tuned to the Dakota State athletics' website for possible schedule changes and locations due to incoming winter storm that will impact the Midwest region.
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 15, Randall (Okla.) 1 – FINAL
- Dakota State sprinted to a 3-0 early lead and never trailed for the rest of the game.
- Ryan McDaniel kicked off the game with a lead-off single. Walker Hultgren was hit-by-pitch and advanced Daniel Lesher, courtesy runner for catcher McDaniel, to second base. Jeremy Green reached safely on base caused by RU's defensive error, allowing Lesher to score for DSU 1-0 lead (Hultgren advanced to third base).
- Dakota State made it 2-0 in the top first when Hultgren scored home after the Saints committed a wild pitch (Green advanced to third base).
- Dawson Portner produced an RBI single to score Green to extend DSU's lead to 3-0 in the top first frame.
- The Trojans added two more runs in the top second inning to extend their lead. Cade Wenninger led off with a single. He advanced to second base after Randall's wild pitch. McDaniel drilled an RBI triple to score Wenninger as DSU's lead grew to 4-0.
- Hultgren added an RBI ground out to score courtesy runner Lesher (for McDaniel) as Dakota State ballooned their lead to 5-0 in the top second inning.
- Reagan LaMance blasted a lead-off triple in the bottom third inning for the Saints. Noah Shipp hit an RBI ground out to score LaMance to trim DSU's lead to 5-1.
- The Trojans poured in five runs in the top fourth frame. McDaniel led off with a walk. Hultgren followed up with a double to advance courtesy runner Lesher to third base.
- Green extended his hitting streak to 20 games as he produced an RBI single to score Lesher for DSU 6-1 lead (Hultgren advanced to third base). The Trojans made it 7-1 after Mason Macaluso added an RBI single to score Hultgren (Green advanced to second base).
- Portner was hit-by-pitch to set up a bases loaded situation for Dakota State in the top fourth. Jace Pribyl hit a 2-RBI single to score Macaluso and Green to make it 9-1 in favor of the Trojans.
- Chris Burke capped DSU's scoring run with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Portner, widening their lead to 10-1 in the top fourth inning.
- Hultgren hit his second double of the game in the top fifth. Green followed up with a 2-run home run balloon Dakota State's lead to 12-1.
- Burke started the top sixth inning with a double. Wenninger hit a single to advance Burke to third base. After Wenninger swiped to second base, Seth Altwine hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Burke (Wenninger advanced to third base) for 13-1 DSU lead.
- Bo Wilson, pinch hitter for McDaniel, drilled an RBI double to score Wenninger to extend DSU's lead to 14-1 in the top sixth.
- Dakota State made it 15-1 in the top sixth after Green's RBI single to score Lesher.
- DSU outhit Randall 15-4 in the game.
- Green was 3-of-4 at the plate with a home run, two singles and drove in a game-high four runs for the Trojans. He scored three runs. McDaniel added a triple, single, and an RBI. Lesher scored four runs.
- Hultgren tallied two doubles and an RBI for DSU. He scored three times. Pribyl added two singles and two RBIs. Wenninger tallied two singles and two runs. Wilson, Macaluso, and Portner each had a hit and an RBI.
- Portner, Burke, and Wenninger each swiped one base for Dakota State.
- Lance Nunley had a double and a walk for Randall. LaMance had a triple and a run. Shipp recorded an RBI. Jayden Reeve and Logan Bush each had a hit.
- Mitsuki Shimonishi (W, 1-0) earned the victory after tossing four innings on the mound for Dakota State. He allowed one run on one hit and recorded five strikeouts. Aiden Rocha pitched three shutout innings in relief, yielding the Saints to three hits. He registered five strikeouts.
- Jett Sparks (L, 0-4) took the setback after working for four innings. He allowed 10 runs (three unearned) on nine hits. Simon Malphrus pitched three innings in relief, giving up five runs on six hits.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 7, Randall (Okla.) 2 – FINAL
- Dakota State used another fast start in the first inning. McDaniel led off with a double. Hultgren added a walk followed by Green's hit-by-pitch to set up a bases loaded situation (courtesy runner Lesher advanced to third base).
- Macaluso drilled a 2-RBI double to score Lesher and Hultgren to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead (Green advanced to third base). Portner followed up with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Green to extend their lead to 3-0.
- Wenninger hit a lead-off double in the top second frame for the Trojans. Altwine hit a fly out to center field to advance Wenninger to third base. McDaniel hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Wenninger to make it 4-0 in favor of DSU.
- Garrett Jenkins led off with a walk for the Saints in the bottom third. Nunley added a walk with two outs. Shipp hit a 2-RBI double to score Jenkins and Nunley as Randall trailed 4-2.
- McDaniel and Hultgren produced back-to-back singles to lead off the top fifth inning. Courtesy runner Lesher swiped to second base after McDaniel's single and advanced to third after Hultgren's single. Green hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Lesher as the Trojans lead 5-2.
- Green also scored caused by RU's defensive error, extending DSU's lead to 6-2 in the top fifth frame with two outs.
- Green's hitting streak ballooned to 21 straight games as he hit a single in the top seventh inning. Green swiped to second base and advanced to third base after RU's wild pitch.
- Macaluso hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Green as DSU's lead grew to 7-2.
- Randall left two runners on base when the game ended, securing the victory for DSU.
- Dakota State tallied nine hits in the game and limited the Saints to three hits.
