Week 1 Preview
MADISON, S.D.—The Dakota State University (S.D.) Trojan football team (6-4 overall record, 4-2 North Star Athletic Association record in 2022) kicks off their 2023 season with the annual rivalry game versus Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) (2-9 overall record, 2-8 Great Plains Athletic Conference in 2022) Saturday evening. The game is set for 7 p.m. at Joe Quintal Field (Kernel Park, 501 E. 11th Ave.) on the campus of Mitchell High School in Mitchell, S.D.
Midco Sports Network will broadcast live as they kick off the college football season. The Chamber of Commerce Traveling trophy contest as the Trojans remain undefeated in the last five meetings with the Tigers. DSU maintained the rivalry trophy after earning a 29-19 victory in their last meeting ever held at Trojan Field last season.
Dakota State had won the last six meetings in the series meeting with Dakota Wesleyan, including the last three games held at the Joe Quintal Field in Mitchell. The Trojans held to a 6-0 victory in a defensive battle in the last road contest at Dakota Wesleyan.
The Trojans were picked to finish third in the North Star Athletic Association, which currently have five members. The Tigers were predicted to play tenth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference football coaches' preseason poll.
Next Up: Dakota State plays their first home game of the season at the newly 'The Dan Beacom Track Complex', which will serve as a temporary home football field in 2023, on Thursday, Aug. 31. The Trojans host NCAA Division III Wisconsin-La Crosse in the 8th annual Ag Bowl game with a tailgate starting at 5 p.m. and game at 7:05 p.m.
Week 1 Quick Hits
+ Dakota State (S.D.) won the last three games held at the Joe Quintal Field since the 2016 season (DSU defeated DWU 34-30 on Aug. 26, 2016 which began the winning streak).
+ The Trojans owned the annual rivalry traveling trophy, the Chamber of Commerce trophy, since its inception in 2017 at the Trojan Field. DSU won the inaugural traveling trophy with the score of 56-39 in a high scoring affair, which was broadcasted on Midco Sports Network.
+ Midco Sports Network will be broadcasting the rivalry game between Dakota State and Dakota Wesleyan for the sixth consecutive season, kicking off the annual college football season.
+ DSU will be playing five road contests and five home contests on their 2023 schedule. The Trojans will be playing on their home temporary field, The Dan Beacom Track Complex, this season before moving to the new stadium in 2024.
+ Dakota State averaged 30.8 points per game during their six-game winning streak in the series meeting with Dakota Wesleyan. The Trojans held the Tigers to 22.7 points per game during the streak.
+ The Trojan developmental football team will begin their 2023 season on Sept. 3 with a contest with Mount Marty (S.D.) in Yankton, S.D. DSU will play three straight home games on Sept. 11 versus Dordt (Iowa), Sept. 17 versus Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), and Sept. 24 versus Minnesota State Tech before closing the season at Morningside (Iowa) on Oct. 1.
+ DSU won four times in the last five games of the 2022 season, hitting back-to-back seasons of 6-4 overall record.
The Series (77th meeting - DWU leads series 39-36-1)
Last Meeting—Aug. 25, 2022, Trojan Field, Madison, S.D.—Dakota State (S.D.) extended their winning streak to six games as they defeated Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) after an offensive explosion in the fourth quarter. The Trojans held on to a 29-19 victory over the Tigers during their last meeting to be held at the Trojan Field.
DSU kicked off the game with an opening 73-yard touchdown pass from
Zach Brooks to
Tyce Ortman. The Trojans never trailed for the rest of the game as they extended their lead to 14-0 by halftime after
Austin Lake's 22-yard touchdown reception from Brooks. DWU scored the next 12 points early in the fourth quarter to trim their deficit to 14-12 before
Tamareon Foster returned a 93-yard kick-off for touchdown to secure the game.
DSU's Brooks passed for 197 yards, while Ortman ran for 63 yards and caught for 73 yards.
Jeremiah 'JJ' Beck led the defense with 11 tackles and a quarterback sack for nine yards loss.
The series began in 1908 with the Tigers winning by the score of 6-0. Dakota State and Dakota Wesleyan were former members of the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference (SDIC) and played until their final conference contest in 1999, where the Trojans won by the score of 45-32. The series briefly returned in 2003 for two years and then again in 2011 where they had played since, except the 2020 season due to COVID. Both teams had played their season opener game since 2015.
Chamber of Commerce Traveling Trophy Notes
Madison, S.D. (Aug. 25, 2023)—The Chamber of Commerce from the cities of Madison and Mitchell had established the rivalry traveling trophy in 2017. Dakota State (S.D.) owns a 5-0 record over Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) since its' inception held at the Trojan Field in 2017, in a highly scoring affair by the score of 56-39.
The first annual Chamber of Commerce traveling trophy saw an attendance record of 5,500 fans, seeing the Trojans upset the nationally-ranked No. 17 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) which was televised lived on Midco Sports Network for the first time. DSU broke a 44-year old school record by racking up 642 total offensive yards to defeat DWU. The Trojans also established numerous single-game records in the 2017 meeting.
DSU's 56 points is still the highest points scored in the annual Chamber of Commerce traveling trophy today. The Trojans had won the last five traveling trophy contests with the Tigers, with the most recent contest at the Trojan Field in the final meeting on that field on Aug. 25, 2022, by the score of 29-19.
Dakota State had scored at least 27 points four times in the last five Chamber of Commerce traveling trophy contests. The Trojans held on to a slim 6-0 victory over the Trojans in a defensive battle during the 2021 meeting in Mitchell, S.D. It was the first shutout victory for Dakota State in the Chamber of Commerce traveling trophy series.
DSU won in a double overtime thriller at Trojan Field on Aug. 29, 2019, to maintain their traveling trophy, thanks to a game-winning 21-yard field goal by Casey Bourque for a 33-30 victory.
The Trojans won by two possessions during the Chamber of Commerce series, while winning by one possession in 2019 (33-30 in double overtime) and 2021 (6-0) meetings.
Trojans edge Warriors to finish third in NSAA poll
Madison, S.D. (Aug. 21, 2023)—Dakota State (S.D.) edged Waldorf (Iowa) by one point to finish third in the North Star Athletic Association football coaches' preseason poll. The Trojans collected nine points in the poll, while the Warriors recorded eight points.
Dakota State finished in a two-way tie for Valley City State (N.D.) last season with 4-2 record each. The Trojans defeated the Vikings in their head-to-head meeting last season. DSU won four times in the last five North Star conference contests to close out the 2022 season with back-to-back winning records, including a 13-0 shutout victory over Waldorf in the Last Game at the Trojan Field.
Dickinson State (N.D.) is the preseason favorite to win the league title for the ninth straight season. The Blue Hawks tallied 16 points and four first place votes. VCSU was picked to finish second with the final first place vote and 13 points. Mayville State (N.D.) finished fifth with four points. All NSAA football members will be playing twice during the season, playing home-and-away series.
2022 DSU Football Season in Review
Madison, S.D. (Aug. 25, 2023)—Dakota State (S.D.) recorded its back-to-back winning seasons with 6-4 record, closing the final chapter of the Trojan Field era with a 13-0 shutout victory over Waldorf (Iowa).
After going 2-3 record after the first half of the season, the Trojans went on to a strong finish with a 4-1 record to capture a second place tie in the North Star Athletic Association football standings with Valley City State (N.D.). DSU was 3-2 record at home and 3-2 record on the road in 2022.
Twelve Dakota State athletes were listed on the 2022 NSAA Football All-Conference teams.

Murphy cited on 2023 Allstate Good Work Teams
Madison, S.D. (July 12, 2023)—
Devonte Murphy of Dakota State (S.D.) was one of the five NAIA nominees on the Combined Divisions with FCS, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division III to be listed on the 2023 AllState AFCA Good Work Team list.
Murphy is a two-time North Star Athletic Association All-Conference recipient, most recently as the Second Team All-Conference in 2022. He tallied 56 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss of 22 yards. He was named to the NSAA All-Conference First Team in 2021. He serves on the DSU's Captain Council and helps in various community services with the Trojan football program.

Ag Bowl is an annual event from DSU Athletics in a way of saying thank you to all the local agriculture businesses.
There will be a naming ceremony event, 'The Dan Beacom Field', at 6:45 p.m. for the new track. Dan earned his bachelor's degree in sociology in 1979. He was a member of the track team, where he ran middle distance runner and nearly ran in every relay (the sprint medley relay, mile relay, two-mile relay, and the distance medley relay). If he wasn't the one competing, he could be found cheering on friends and strangers from the sidelines. Dan encouraged his brother, Miles, to attend Dakota State and run in the track program.
