Jimmies hold off Trojans in NSAA football 21-13

Dakota State (S.D.) could not overcome UJ's fast start late in the first quarter

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Jamestown (N.D.) scored 14 points within eight seconds in the late first quarter Saturday, holding off Dakota State (S.D.) 21-13 in the North Star Athletic Association football action at Hansen Stadium/Rollie Greeno Field.  The Jimmies handed the Trojans their third consecutive loss.

Dakota State fell to 4-3 overall record and 2-3 NSAA conference record.  Jamestown recorded their first win of the season, improving to 1-6 overall record and 1-4 record.  Both teams split their two NSAA meetings this season (DSU won first meeting 16-6 on Sept. 14 in Madison, S.D.)

FIRST QUARTER
Dakota State was forced to punt after going three-and-out with seven yards to start the game.  Jamestown used 11 plays for 40 yards in five minutes and eight seconds on the ensuing drive, but the Trojans' defense halted UJ's fourth down situation on DSU's 32-yard line with 8:07 on the clock.

The Trojans then recorded 24 yards on the next drive, highlighted by a 14-yard rush by Tyce Ortman.  DSU was forced to punt from UJ's 44-yard line.  UJ began their next drive with 6:05 to go in the first quarter on their own 14-yard line.

Jamestown kicked off the drive with a 54-yard rush by Carlos Julian to DSU's 32-yard line.  The Jimmies scored the first points of the game as Johnny Grann rushed for a 2-yard touchdown.  Aanon Peterson followed up with the PAT extra point kick to give UJ a 7-0 lead with 2:13 to go in the first.

The Jimmies quickly scored as DSU's AJ Donovan fumbled the ball and was returned by UJ's Erza Belingheri for a 15-yard touchdown with 2:05 left.  Peterson followed up with the PAT extra point kick to balloon the Jimmies' lead to 14-0.
UJ led 14-0 after the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
Dakota State committed another turnover to kick off the second quarter as Tanner Chaffee caught an interception on UJ's 10-yard line with 12:52 on the clock.

Gage Solano threw an interception on the ensuing drive for Jamestown.  Blake Duran caught the interception on DSU's 10-yard line with 9:50 to go before halftime.

After trading punts later in the second quarter, Dakota State snapped their scoring drought after using four plays for 58 yards.  Donovan threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Austin Lake with 3:15 left in the second.  Carson Sauseda kicked a successful PAT extra point kick as the Trojans trailed 14-7.

After Jimmies' 20-yard punt from their own 29-yard line to 49-yard line with 2:30 left, Donovan kicked off the drive with a 13-yard pass from Donovan to Tysen Grinde.  The Trojans had to settle for a 42-yard field goal by Sauseda as DSU trimmed UJ's lead to 14-10 with 1:13 remaining in the second quarter.

Zach Hammett rushed for four straight plays to close the second quarter as UJ held on to a 14-10 halftime lead.

THIRD QUARTER
Jamestown kicked off the third quarter with seven plays for 75 yards in four minutes for a touchdown, highlighted by a 32-yard reception by Dawson Schmidt.  Hammett rushed for an 11-yard touchdown, followed by Peterson's PAT extra point kick to extend UJ's lead to 21-10 with 11 minutes on the clock.

Dakota State answered with 15 plays for 67 yards in 7:26 on the ensuing drive.  The drive highlighted with a 11-yard rush by Preston Iverson, followed by JerQon Conners' 13-yard reception to UJ's 21-yard line and a 14-yard reception by Lake to UJ's 7-yard line.

The Trojans could not score a touchdown as they settled for a 20-yard field goal by Sauseda, trailing 21-13 with 3:34 to go.

Jamestown led 21-13 by the end of the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER
Both DSU and UJ traded punts to kick off the fourth quarter.  With Jamestown starting the drive on their own 50-yard line with 12 minutes remaining, Dakota State's defense halted the Jimmies from scoring as Deveon Moses intercepted Grann's pass at DSU's 2-yard line with 9:03 left.

Dakota State and Jamestown struggled offensively in the fourth quarter.  The Trojans were unable to continue their drive after using seven plays for 33 yards in less than a minute, as they turned the ball on downs on DSU's 40-yard line with 1:31 remaining.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
Donovan was 21-for-34 with 162 passing yards and a touchdown for Dakota State.  He threw a completed pass to nine different receivers, led by Lake with four catches for 51 yards and a touchdown.  Melek Ford added three catches for 31 yards.  Grinde had five receptions for 28 yards.  Maddox Kihne added an 18-yard reception.

Ortman rushed 14 times for 73 yards for the Trojans.  Iverson added 13 rushes for 68 yards. 

Taron Serr led DSU's defense with nine tackles.  Collin Brueggeman added five tackles.  Jay Skogerboe, Chris Guipi-Bopala and Cole Paulson each registered a tackle-for-loss.  Moses and Duran each had an interception.

Sauseda scored seven points in the kicking game for Dakota State, hitting a pair of field goals and the PAT extra point kick.  He averaged 63.8 yards per kick-off.

Grann was 13-for-24 with 149 yards and an interception for Jamestown.  He had a rushing touchdown.  Isiah Roebuck caught three passes for 48 yards.  Colton Schumach added three receptions for 38 yards.  Schmidt had two receptions for 35 yards.

Hammett ran the ball 21 times for 74 yards and a touchdown for UJ.  Julian added six rushes for 73 yards.

Belingheri led the Jimmies' defense with eight tackles and a fumble recovery of 15 yards for a touchdown.  Kyle Williams added seven tackles.  Chaffee and Mason Parker each had six tackles.

Peterson averaged 49.3 yards per kick-off for Jamestown.

TEAM COMPARISONS
Jamestown outgained Dakota State 296-283 in total offensive yards.  The Jimmies rushed 147 yards to the Trojans 121 rushing yards.  DSU threw 162 yards to UJ 149 yards.

Dakota State collected 17 first downs in the game compared to Jamestown 15 first downs.  UJ converted 5-of-14 on third downs, while DSU was 1-of-12 on third down situations. 

The Jimmies held the ball for 33 minutes, 31 seconds.  The Trojans had the ball control for 26 minutes, 29 seconds.

Dakota State plays their final home football contest next Saturday, hosting Valley City State (N.D.).  Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. at Brian Kern Family Stadium on Blankley Field.
