Trojans hit century mark in men’s basketball season opener

Dakota State (S.D.) hit century mark in season opener for the first time since 2012-13 season opener

MADISON, S.D. – All fifteen Dakota State (S.D.) players scored in the men's basketball season opener Thursday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, hitting the century mark in 108-40 victory over Oak Hills (Minn.).  It was the first time since the 2015-16 season home opener that the Trojans (1-0 overall record) surpassed the century mark (105 points versus Mount Marty, S.D.).

It was the season opener for Oak Hills (0-1 overall record).

The Trojans posted their third largest margin of victory in school history (68 points).  DSU also held the Wolfpack to 40 points, tied for fifth in school history in points allowed (vs. Mayville State, N.D.), on Feb. 6, 2013). 

Dakota State continues their home stand Sunday afternoon, hosting Union (Neb.) with a 4 p.m. tip-off at DSU Fieldhouse.

After a scoreless first minute of the game, Dakota State scored five straight points kicked off by Isaac Sumption's 3-pointer followed by a layup by Colby Dillenbeck for a 5-0 lead with 18:14 on the clock.

Leading 5-3, Tyler Beckwith sparked DSU's 9-0 scoring run with back-to-back 3-pointers.  Lane Tietz capped the scoring run with a 3-pointer to balloon the Trojans' lead to 14-3 with less than 15 minutes to go in the first half.

Noah Larson hit a 3-pointer as the Wolfpack could get no closer than eight points at 14-6 with 13:26 left in the first.  Dakota State then went on another 9-0 scoring run, capped by Spencer Hutchinson's basket for 23-7 lead with 11:24 to go before halftime.

DSU led 47-17 by halftime.  The Trojans shot 47.4 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes (18-of-38 field goals) and held the Wolfpack to 23.1 percent (6-of-26 field goals).

The Trojans poured 61 points in the final twenty minutes of the game to secure the victory (Wolfpack scored 23 points), thanks to their sizzling 66.7 percent field goal shooting (20-of-30 field goals).

Six DSU players scored in double digits, led by Dillenbeck with 16 points on his 6-of-6 field goals (and 4-of-7 free-throws).  Aiden Jensen added 15 points off the bench after going 7-of-7 from the field.  Brayden Pankonen tallied 13 points.  Tietz and Trelin Barnett each scored 11 points.  Sumption scored 10 points.

Dakota State contributed 32 assists in the game, tied for fourth most assists in school single-game school record (vs. Presentation, S.D. on Nov. 15, 2002, and at Oglala Lakota, S.D., on Jan. 13, 2013.  Taine Mitchell dished out a game-high five assists.  Pankonen, Calvin Payne, and Sumption each added four assists. 

Beckwith and Jensen each pulled down six rebounds for the Trojans.  Ethan Slaathaug added five rebounds.  Pankonen, Sumption, and Mitchel each stole the ball three times.

Larson led the Wolfpack with 16 points.  Alexander Gonzalez and Caleb Smoot each added seven points.  Smoot collected six rebounds.  Bryson Keepers had five rebounds.

The Trojans shot 55.9 percent overall from the field (38-of-68 field goals) compared to the Wolfpack 29.6 percent (16-of-54 field goals).  DSU drained 14 3-pointers in 40 attempts (tied for third most 3-point field goal attempts in single-game school record), while OH was 3-of-20 from the 3-point arc. 

DSU registered plus-27 rebounding advantage over Oak Hills (50-23).  The Trojans outrebounded the Wolfpack 16-6 on the offensive boards. 

Dakota State outscored Oak Hills 22-2 in fast-break points, 30-2 in points off turnovers, and 64-10 in bench points.
