MADISON, S.D. –
Carson Sauseda of Dakota State (S.D.) earned his second North Star Athletic Association Football Special Player-of-the-Week award, the ninth weekly edition was announced by the conference office Monday.
Sauseda – 5-foot-10 junior kicker from Georgetown, Texas – went 3-for-3 on his kicking game in Trojans' 13-6 home finale victory over Valley City State (N.D.) at Brian Kern Family Stadium on Oct. 26. DSU earned their home field winning record in the first year of the new football stadium, halting their three-game losing skid to improve their overall record to 5-3.
DSU is in a two-way tie for second in the league with a 3-3 record with Mayville State (N.D.). It was the first time that the Trojans earned a season series sweep of the Vikings, as well as the first home victory over VCSU since 1998.
Facing windy conditions, Sauseda hit a clutch 19-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter to pull away for the Trojans. DSU's lead ballooned to 13-3 after his field goal with four minutes and eighteen seconds to go in the game.
He also hit a 26-yard field goal in the second quarter as Dakota State tied the game 3-3 with 11:15 on the clock. He added the PAT extra point kick after
Tyce Ortman's 5-yard touchdown run with 5:17 left in the third quarter, thanks to
Cole Paulson's fumble recovery on VCSU's punt return in the Valley City State's red zone.
Sauseda registered five kickoffs for 242 total yards (48.2 yards per kickoff) with two touchbacks in the game.
Sauseda leads the North Star Athletic Association in field goals made this season with nine. He also holds the longest field goal in the conference of 52 yards. He leads the North Star conference in scoring from kicking, tallying 45 points after DSU's victory over Valley City State.
Carson majors in business at Dakota State University.
Dakota State is idle this week and won't return to action until Saturday, Nov. 9. The Trojans begin their two-game road trip in North Dakota, making their first stop at Mayville State (N.D.). Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. at Jerome Berg Field in Mayville, N.D.
