MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) poured in a season-high 68 points in the first half, cruising to a 122-72 home victory over Providence (Manitoba) Saturday afternoon at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans' 122 points is the third most single-game points scored in DSU men's basketball school history, one point shy for the second most points in a game (123 points versus Martin Luther, Minn., in 1991-92).
Dakota State raised their overall record to 4-1, remaining undefeated at home with a 4-0 record this season. The Trojans extended their home court winning streak to five games, dating back to last season. It was an exhibition game for the Pilots.
It was the seventh largest margin of victory in the DSU men's basketball school record book (50 points).
Prior to the men's basketball game, the Trojan men's basketball team honored the family of the late Chief Deputy Sheriff Ken Prorok and the law enforcement personnel's. The squad presented the Prorok's family a jersey with the 'KP' badge on the uniform. Prorok was a former DSU alumni and coach.
DSU heads to the Corn Palace on Wednesday evening for the annual Battle of the Blues, sponsored by BankWest. The Trojans face rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) scheduled for an 8 p.m. tip-off in Mitchell, S.D.
Dakota State (S.D.) 122, Providence (Manitoba) 72 – FINAL
Providence took the first lead of the game 1-0 after a free throw from Emmanuel Oleko with nineteen minutes, twenty-four seconds on the clock.
Calvin Payne made a basket with 18:48 on the clock as DSU grabbed a 2-1 lead.
Holding a slim 19-17 lead, Dakota State went on a 16-2 outburst capped by a 3-pointer from
Rysley Borman (assisted by
Spencer Hutchinson) for a 36-19 lead with 8:21 to go in the first half.
DSU ballooned their lead to 68-37 by halftime after a layup by
Lane Tietz. The Trojans shot a sizzling 25-of-37 from the field (67.6 percent), including 11-of-19 3-pointers, in the first twenty minutes. Providence was held to 35.5 percent (11-of-31 field goals) and 5-of-7 from the 3-point arc.
The Trojans hit the century mark for the second time this season when
Trelin Barnett hit a basket with 11:03 left for a 100-53 lead.
DSU outscored UP 54-35 in the final twenty minutes. The Trojans were 22-of-43 from the field (51.2 percent) compared to the Pilots 16-of-36 field goals (44.4 percent).
All 15 Dakota State players scored in the game. Tietz poured 20 points on his 7-of-8 field goals, including 5-of-6 from the 3-point arc.
Brayden Pankonen added 17 points (4-of-6 field goals, 3-of-5 3-pointers, and made all six free throw attempts). He stole the ball three times.
Aiden Jensen scored 13 points (5-of-6 field goals) and pulled down seven rebounds.
Isaac Sumption tallied 11 points and three assists.
DSU's
Colby Dillenbeck was 4-for-4 from the field for nine points. Barnett and
Ethan Slaathaug each had eight points. Barnett had six assists.
Nolan Segner, Borman, and
Kailen Arnold each had six points. Segner grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Tyler Beckwith and Hutchinson each registered two blocks. Payne had six rebounds and four assists.
Taine Mitchell dished out five assists.
Oleko led the Pilots with 18 points and nine rebounds. Lucas Egitto added 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Riley Paul had 12 points and three steals. Joshua Lamoureux had nine points. Raphael Rhys Maestre recorded eight points and five assists.
Dakota State shot a season-best 58.8 field goal percentage (47-of-80 field goals). The 47 field goals made is the third most in DSU men's basketball single game school record book.
The Trojans drained 15 3-pointers in 36 attempts and converted 13-of-17 free-throws. Providence was 40.3 percent from the field (27-of-67 field goals), 7-of-15 3-pointers, and 11-of-17 free-throws.
DSU had a plus-20 rebounding margin over UP (50-30).
The Trojans tied a season-high 32 assists in the game, which tied for the fourth most assists in a single game in the school record book.
Dakota State outscored Providence 32-12 in points off turnovers, 78-12 in bench points, and 22-4 in fast break points.
