Dakota State remains undefeated at home in men’s basketball victory over Lions

Trojans extended home court winning streak to six games (5-0 record at home this season)

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) used ten (10) different players with at least a point and a rebound, coupled with a team-high 53 rebounds in their 82-64 men's basketball home victory over Trinity Bible (N.D.) Tuesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.  The victory also extended DSU's home court winning streak to six games, remaining undefeated at home this season with a 5-0 record.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 6-4 on the season.  It was an exhibition game for Trinity Bible, who remained at 4-4 overall record.

The DSU men's basketball held their Military Appreciation Night.

The Trojans continue their season-high six-game home stand next Wednesday (Dec. 4) as they return to action after Thanksgiving break.  DSU hosts Midland (Neb.) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference at DSU Fieldhouse with a 7 p.m. tip-off.

Dakota State (S.D.) 82, Trinity Bible (N.D.) 64 – FINAL

Dakota State erupted for three consecutive 3-pointers to kick off the game from three different players – Tyler Beckwith, Brayden Pankonen, and Taine Mitchell.  The Trojans opened with a 9-2 lead after Mitchell's 3-pointer with eighteen minutes and eighteen seconds on the clock.

Trinity Bible also went perfect 6-of-6 field goals to start the game, capped by a 3-pointer from Quincy Wilson as the Lions led 14-13 with 16:11 to go in the first half.

The Trojans then quickly went on a 9-0 scoring outburst, capped by a 3-pointer from Lukas Morgan (assisted by Beckwith) for a 22-14 lead with less than 15 minutes in the first half.

The Lions regained their lead at 23-22 after a 3-pointer from Jacob King with 10:44 on the clock in the first.

Dakota State went on a 12-0 scoring run, with five different players (Pankonen, Lane Tietz, Mitchell, Ethan Slaathaug, and Morgan) scored during the run.  Morgan hit a basket to give DSU their first double digit lead of the game at 34-23 with 6:35 left in the first half.

TBC closed the first half with a 15-7 scoring run to trim DSU's lead to 41-38 by halftime.

The Lions shot 45.7 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes (16-of-35 field goals) and 5-of-17 from the 3-point line.  The Trojans were 34.2 percent (14-of-41 field goals), 7-of-22 3-pointers, and 6-of-9 free-throws in the first half.

DSU kicked off the second half with a 9-0 scoring run, capped by a steal and layup by Tietz for a 50-38 lead.  The Lions were forced to call a timeout with 17:21 remaining.

Trinity Bible came out of the timeout with an 8-0 run, trimming their deficit to 50-46 and forcing the Trojans to burn a timeout with 14:18 on the clock.

Dakota State maintained their lead and pulled away for the victory.  Leading 57-53, the Trojans went on an 8-0 scoring run capped by a 3-pointer from Tietz (assisted by Pankonen) for a 65-53 lead with 7:28 left.

The Trojans outscored the Lions 41-26 in the final twenty minutes to secure the victory.  Dakota State shot 17-of-36 field goals (47.2 percent) and 6-of-20 3-pointers in the second half.  Trinity Bible was held to 32.4 percent (11-of-34 field goals) and 1-of-12 from the 3-point line.

Morgan poured in a season-high 21 points off the bench for Dakota State.  He was 7-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-7 from the 3-point line, and hit all three free throw attempts.  He also collected five rebounds.  Pankonen tallied 15 points and collected six rebounds.  He contributed three assists.

Tietz scored 12 points and dished out five assists for the Trojans.  He also stole the ball a season-high five times.  Colby Dillenbeck scored nine points and grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds.  Beckwith had nine points and five rebounds.  Mitchell recorded five points, eight rebounds, and five assists.  Isaac Sumption scored five points.  Aiden Jensen had six rebounds.  Jensen, Slaathaug, and Rysley Borman each scored two points.

Colten Pagnac led the Lions with 12 points and five rebounds.  He had two blocks.  Marcellus Mencarini added 11 points and seven assists.  King had 11 points off the bench.  Ogugua scored 10 points, collected six rebounds, and registered six assists. 

Dakota State shot 40.3 percent overall from the field (31-of-77 field goals) compared to Trinity Bible 39.1 percent (27-of-69 field goals).  The Trojans hit 13 3-pointers in 42 tries, while the Lions hit 6-of-29 3-pointers.  DSU was 7-of-12 from the free-throw line to TBC 4-of-7 free-throws.

The Trojans outrebounded the Lions 53-40 (18-9 on offensive board).  DSU outscored TBC 14-5 in second chance points. 

Dakota State outscored Trinity Bible 34-22 inside the paint, 32-21 in bench points, and 18-12 in points off turnovers.
