MADISON, S.D. – Mayville State (N.D.) used a fast start and never trailed – except for two ties – in the North Star Athletic Association men's basketball action Saturday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, defeating Dakota State (S.D.) 72-63. It was the conference season opener for the Trojans.
Dakota State fell to 7-6 overall record and 0-1 NSAA conference record. Mayville State ballooned their winning streak to eight games, raising their overall record to 10-3 and 2-0 record in the league.
The Trojans continue their home stand Saturday evening, hosting Valley City State (N.D.) in another North Star Athletic Association action. The game is set for a 5 p.m. tip-off at DSU Fieldhouse.
Mayville State (N.D.) 72, Dakota State (S.D.) 63 – FINAL
Mayville State scored the game's first nine points, sparked by six straight points by London Williams. JJ White capped the scoring run with a 3-pointer to give MSU a 9-0 lead, forcing Dakota State to call a timeout with seventeen minutes and forty-five seconds on the clock.
The Trojans snapped their scoring drought a 3-pointer from
Lane Tietz with 17:00 to go in the first half (DSU trailed 9-3).
DSU sparked a 15-6 scoring run since the first timeout of the game, tying the game for the first time at 15-15 as
Tyler Beckwith drained a 3-pointer (assisted by
Taine Mitchell) with 12:20 to go in the first half.
MSU then went on a 9-3 scoring run to earn a 24-18 lead after a basket by Trey Swayzer with less than ten minutes to go before intermission.
Dakota State went on an 8-2 scoring run, thanks to their 3-of-4 field goals during their scoring run.
Calvin Payne hit a 3-pointer (assisted by
Isaac Sumption) as DSU knotted the game for the second time at 26-26 with 7:17 on the clock in the first half.
The Comets closed the first half with an 18-5 scoring run in the final 7:02 to balloon their lead to 44-31.
Mayville State shot 54.5 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes of the game (18-of-33 field goals) compared to Dakota State 34.4 percent (11-of-32 field goals).
MSU kicked off the second half with four straight points after a basket from Williams and Darren Jones. The Comets led 48-31 as the Trojans called a timeout with less than 19 minutes to go in the game.
Mayville State led as many as 19 points for the rest of the way. Dakota State closed the game with a 13-4 run in the final 4:26, ending with a basket from
Lukas Morgan as the game expired.
The Trojans outscored the Comets 32-28 in the second half. DSU was 36.7 percent from the field (11-of-30 field goals) and held MSU to 33.3 percent (10-of-30 field goals).
Tietz scored 11 points and dished out four assists for Dakota State. Beckwith added nine points and three rebounds. Morgan had nine points and five rebounds off the bench.
Rysley Borman had eight points.
Colby Dillenbeck recorded six points and five rebounds. Mitchell registered five points, nine rebounds, four assists, block, and steal.
Aiden Jensen had five points, six rebounds, and a block.
Four MSU players scored in double digits, led by Jones and Williams with 18 points each. Williams had five assists, while Jones had five rebounds. Swayzer added 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists. White tallied 12 points and four steals.
Cristian Butler and Justin Fisher each recorded four assists for Mayville State. White recorded two blocks.
The Comets shot 44.4 percent overall from the field (28-of-63 field goals) compared to the Trojans 35.5 percent (22-of-62 field goals). DSU was 10-of-34 from the 3-point arc, while MSU was 5-of-12 3-pointers.
Mayville State hit 11 free throws in 15 attempts. Dakota State was 9-of-11 at the free-throw line.
The Trojans outrebounded the Comets 41-35. MSU outscored DSU 40-20 inside the paint.
Dakota State outscored Mayville State 14-7 in second chance points and 29-19 in bench points.
