NCAA Division I Jackrabbits defeat NAIA’s #6 Trojans in exhibition contest

Trojans opened with a lead in the first quarter in the first meeting since Nov. 24, 1992

BROOKINGS, S.D. – NAIA's nationally-ranked No. 6 Dakota State (S.D.) faced NCAA Division I South Dakota State in the women's basketball exhibition game Tuesday evening at First Bank & Trust Arena.  The Trojans trailed by four points after the first quarter as the Jackrabbits pulled away for an 84-47 victory. 

It was the first time since Nov. 24, 1992, that both teams faced each other in Brookings.  The Trojans remain at 8-3 overall record.  South Dakota State extended their winning streak to seven games, raising their overall record to 10-2.

Dakota State closes out their non-conference schedule this weekend as they play a pair of games in the Warner (Fla.) Classic.  The Trojans take Evangel (Mo.) Friday and host-team Warner Saturday.  Both games are set to tip off at 2 p.m. (Eastern Time)/1 p.m. (Central Time) at Turner Athletic Center in Lake Wales, Fla.

After South Dakota State missed their first scoring opportunity, Dakota State grabbed the first lead of the game 3-0 as Lilli Mackley drained a 3-pointer (assisted by Angela Slattery) with nine minutes and thirty seconds on the clock. 

The Trojans maintained their lead for more than three minutes as both teams struggled offensively for more than two minutes.  DSU extended their lead to 5-2 as Tabor Teel hit a layup (assisted by Bria Wasmund) with less than seven minutes to go in the first.

SDSU went on a 14-0 scoring run to grab the first double digit lead of the game at 16-5 after Kallie Theisen's layup with 3:58 left in the first period.

Dakota State went on a 11-4 closing run in the final 3:44 of the first quarter, cutting South Dakota State's lead to 20-16.

SDSU outscored DSU 14-4 in the second period to balloon heir lead to 34-20 by halftime. 

The Trojans could get no closer than 10 points after using an 8-2 outburst, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Kenzi Simmons followed by a free-throw from Mackley.  DSU trailed 45-35 with 3:30 remaining.

South Dakota State closed the third quarter with a 9-0 scoring run to extend their lead to 54-35.  The Jackrabbits outscored the Trojans 30-12 in the final quarter to pull away for the victory.

Mackley scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds for Dakota State.  Slattery added nine pots and five rebounds.  Simmons tallied five points.  Teel, Ella Carstensen, and Angelina Chapple each had four points.  Wasmund dished out three assists.  Molli Thornton contributed two assists.

Four SDSU players scored in double digits, led by Brooklyn Meyer with 16 points.  Emilee Fox added 12 points.  Haleigh Timmer and Katie Vaecka each had 11 points.  Timmer posted a double-double with 11 rebounds.  Paige Meyer had seven assists.

South Dakota State shot 34-of-72 from the field (47 percent) compared to Dakota State 17-of-64 field goals (27 percent).  The Jackrabbits struggled at the free-throw line by going 9-of-17, while DSU was 7-of-10 free-throws.

SDSU outrebounded DSU 57-35.  The Jackrabbits outscored the Trojans 19-5 on second chance points.

Dakota State had seven steals in the game, while South Dakota State had four steals.
