Slattery hit 1,000th career points in (6) DSU’s 69-63 home win over (24) UJ

Dakota State (S.D.) extends winning streak to 13 games; defeats UJ at home for the first time since Jan. 10, 2009

MADISON, S.D. – Senior Angela Slattery reached her career milestone mid-way in the fourth quarter to propel the NAIA's No. 6 ranked Dakota State (S.D.) to a 69-63 victory over No. 24 ranked Jamestown (N.D.) in the North Star Athletic Association women's basketball action at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans earned their second straight victory over the Jimmies and earned their first home victory over UJ since Jan. 10, 2009.

Dakota State extended their winning streak to 13 games, tied the third longest winning streak in school history with the 2023-24 squad.  The Trojans raised their overall record to 15-3 and remained undefeated in the North Star conference with a 7-0 record.  Jamestown suffered their third setback in the previous four games, falling to 14-5 overall record and 4-4 NSAA conference record.

DSU and UJ will meet for their third North Star conference meet on the final regular-season week in late February.

Dakota State hosts Dickinson State (N.D.) in another NSAA match-up on Saturday afternoon at DSU Fieldhouse.  The game is set to tip-off at 3 p.m.

(6) Dakota State (S.D.) 69, (24) Jamestown (N.D.) 63 – FINAL

The Jimmies opened a 10-5 lead after a pair of free throws by Kate Cordes with five minutes and thirty-six seconds on the clock.

DSU then went on an 8-2 scoring run to grab a 13-12 lead after a 3-pointer from Angela Slattery (assisted by Lilli Mackley) with 3:08 remaining in the first quarter.

Dakota State and Jamestown went through four lead changes and two ties in the first ten minutes of the game.  UJ grabbed an 18-15 lead after the first period.

The Trojans erupted for an 11-2 outburst to start the second quarter, capped by a 3-pointer from Hamtyn Heinz for a 26-20 lead with 7:24 on the clock.

Jamestown then answered with a 15-3 scoring run, overtaking the lead at 35-29 after a 3-point play by Cordes with less than three minutes to go before halftime.

Slattery hit a layup (assisted by Cierra Watkins) with less than 50 seconds to go as the Trojans regained their lead to 36-35 after going on a 7-0 run.

Jayden Wiest drained a 3-pointer as the Jimmies took a slim 38-36 halftime lead. 

DSU outscored UJ 21-20 in the second period.  The Jimmies shot 8-of-13 from the field in the final ten minutes of the first half (61.5 percent), while the Trojans were 8-of-15 field goals (53.3 percent).

Dakota State roared with a 9-0 third quarter run, holding Jamestown scoreless in the first three-plus minutes.  Tabor Teel capped the scoring run with an offensive rebound followed by a layup for a 45-38 lead, forcing the Jimmies to call a timeout with 6:43 remaining.

UJ trimmed DSU's lead to 50-48 after a pair of free throws by Jailyn Martinson with 2:13 remaining.  Both teams were unable to score in the final 2:13 as the Trojans maintained a slim 2-point lead.

Slattery hit back-to-back 3-pointers (with assists from Olivia Ritter and Bria Wasmund) to balloon Dakota State's lead to 56-48 with 8:45 remaining in the fourth.

The Trojans stretched to their biggest lead of the game after a free throw from Slattery at 60-51 with 7:50 remaining, sparking their 10-3 scoring run.

UJ answered with seven straight points, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Wiest, followed by a basket from Cordes and a layup from Kate Busek.  The Jimmies trimmed the Trojans' lead to 60-58 with 5:01 to go in the game.

A technical foul by the Jimmies' head coach sent Slattery to the free throw line with 4:25 remaining.  She nailed down both free throws to become the 24th Trojan women's basketball player to score 1,000th career point in school history (DSU led 62-58).

Jamestown could get no closer than one point at 64-63 after a 3-pointer from Cordes with 2:24 left.

The Trojans kept the Jimmies scoreless for the rest of the game, scoring the final five points in the last 1:14.

DSU outscored UJ 19-15 in the final quarter.

Slattery led Dakota State with 21 points on her 7-of-13 field goals, 3-of-5 from the 3-point line, and hit 4-of-5 free throws.  She added four rebounds and stole the ball twice.  Teel added a double-double of 19 points and collected 11 rebounds.  She contributed three assists and a block. 

Wasmund scored 10 points for the Trojans.  She produced four assists and stole the ball a career high five times.  Kenzi Simmons tallied six points and five rebounds off the bench.  Ritter stole the ball three times.  Angelina Chapple registered two blocks.

Cordes paced the Jimmies with 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists.  Jessica Loftstrom added 11 points and seven rebounds.  Busek had seven points, four rebounds, and three assists.  Samantha Paulsen had eight points and two steals.

Dakota State shot 36.1 percent overall from the field (22-of-61 field goals) compared to Jamestown 37.7 percent (23-of-61 field goals).  The Trojans hit 9-of-28 from the 3-point line, while the Jimmies were 7-of-18 3-pointers. 

DSU made 16-of-25 free throws to UJ 10-of-12 free throws.

Dakota State outrebounded Jamestown 41-38.  The Trojans outscored the Jimmies 23-20 in points off turnovers and 16-8 in second chance points.
