MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) shot a sizzling 52.4 percent from the field Friday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, snapping their seven-game losing skid with an 83-60 victory over Jamestown (N.D.) in the North Star Athletic Association men's basketball action. The Trojans earned their first win over the Jimmies since Dec. 1, 2017, at DSU Fieldhouse, as well as their first NSAA conference victory this season.
Both teams split their two NSAA conference meetings this season and will play their third meeting during the final week of regular season play in late February.
DSU snapped their seven-game losing skid, improving their overall record to 8-11 and 1-6 NSAA conference. UJ fell to 11-10 overall record and 6-2 NSAA conference record, which currently holds second place in the conference standings. The Trojans ended the Jimmies' six-game winning streak.
It was the largest margin of victory for DSU over UJ since Feb. 29, 2016, during the NSAA conference's championship game (79-65) at DSU Fieldhouse.
Dakota State takes on the NSAA's conference leader Dickinson State (N.D.), who suffered their first conference Friday evening at Bellevue (Neb.) 74-72 in overtime, Saturday evening. The game is set for 5 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
Dakota State (S.D.) 83, Jamestown (N.D.) 60 – FINAL
Jamestown kicked off the game by scoring the first five points. Cole Glasgow hit a jump shot followed by a 3-pointer from Silas Bennion for a 5-0 lead with eighteen minutes and fifty-two seconds on the clock.
Dakota State answered by scoring 10 straight points, sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers from
Aiden Jensen and
Lane Tietz.
Taine Mitchell and
Tyler Beckwith followed up with a pair of baskets as the Trojans led 10-5 with 15:19 on the clock in the first half.
The Jimmies answered with five straight points to knot the game at 10-10 after a 3-point play from Carson Woodford with 13:47 on the clock.
Jensen fueled the next DSU's scoring run with seven straight points and extended to 9-0 run after a layup from
Lukas Morgan for 19-10 lead with 11:16 to go in the first half.
Leading 27-22, Jensen highlighted Dakota State's 9-2 scoring run with three straight 3-pointers to grab a 36-24 lead with less than two minutes before halftime.
Anthony Walters hit a pair of free throws as Jimmies trimmed the Trojans' lead to 36-26 by halftime.
DSU shot 45.5 percent from the field (15-of-33 field goals) in the first twenty minutes and held UJ to 32.3 percent (10-of-31 field goals).
Jamestown could get no closer than six points at two different occasions – 36-30 with 18:39 left after Woodford's basket and 39-33 after a 3-pointer from Bennion with 18:02 remaining.
At 47-38, Dakota State went on a 23-12 scoring run capped by back-to-back 3-pointers from
Nolan Segner and
Isaac Sumption. DSU led 70-50, forcing UJ to call a timeout with 7:44 remaining.
Tietz hit a layup with 3:44 left to give the Trojans the biggest lead of the game at 78-52, securing the victory.
Dakota State outscored Jamestown 47-34 in the final twenty minutes, thanks to their blazing 60 percent from the field (18-of-30 field goals) and 8-of-16 3-pointers. UJ was 43.8 percent from the field (14-of-32 field goals) in the second half.
Jensen scored a season-high 19 points for DSU. He was 7-of-11 from the field and 5-of-7 from the 3-point line. He collected six rebounds and registered a block. Tietz added 20 points (8-of-16 field goals) and contributed four assists. Segner tallied 10 points and four rebounds off the bench.
Brayden Pankonen had eight points and three rebounds for Dakota State. Beckwith had seven points and dished out a season-high five assists. Mitchell had six rebounds and two assists. Morgan recorded six points and six rebounds. Sumption had five points and tied a career-high four assists.
Bennion led the Jimmies with 17 points (7-of-14 field goals). Walters scored 11 points off the bench. Woodford and Ayden Stainbrook each added seven points. Woodford had eight rebounds. Will Cordes had six assists, while Glasgow added four assists.
Dakota State shot 33-of-63 overall from the field and held Jamestown to 38.1 percent (24-of-63 field goals). The Trojans tied a season-high 14 3-pointers in 32 attempts (43.8 percent). The Jimmies were held to 6-of-27 3-pointers.
DSU outrebounded UJ 36-32.
The Trojans outscored the Jimmies 15-1 in points off turnovers and 32-26 inside the paint.
