(RV) DSU plays final home volleyball matches, closes regular season next week in North Dakota

(RV) Trojans plays final two home matches Friday and Saturday; heads to North Dakota Wednesday and next Saturday

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University Trojan volleyball team prepares for their final home stand at DSU Fieldhouse this weekend and closes out their regular season schedule in North Dakota next week as the postseason nears.

Dakota State (S.D.) (14-10 overall record, 10-8 Frontier, receiving votes – RV – in the latest NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll) hosts the NAIA's nationally ranked No. 1 team and Frontier Conference leader Providence (Mont.) (25-1 overall record, 18-0 Frontier) Friday evening.  Fans are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes to the match, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Two DSU seniors – Maddi Langerock and Leilani Weber – will be honored prior to the home finale Saturday afternoon versus Montana State-Northern (15-9 overall record, 13-5 Frontier).  The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

Dakota State concludes their regular season schedule with two road matches next week in North Dakota.  The Trojans travel to Lewy Lee Fieldhouse to take on Mayville State (N.D.) (6-17 overall record, 4-14 Frontier) on Wednesday in Mayville, N.D.  The junior varsity match is set for 4 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 6 p.m.

DSU plays their final regular season match next Saturday afternoon, visiting Valley City State (N.D.) (10-13 overall record, 8-10 Frontier).  The varsity match is set for 2 p.m. at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse (730 8th Ave SW) in Valley City, N.D.
 

Dakota State's five-match road trip recap
Dakota State kicked off their five-match road trip, with four straight matches in the Frontier Conference, with a 3-1 victory at Rocky Mountain (Mont.) on Oct. 19 in Billings, Mont.  The Trojans fell short in five-set thriller at (RV) Carroll (Mont.) on Oct. 20.

After taking a day off, DSU returned to action on Oct. 22 where they dropped another five-set match at (RV) Montana Tech.  The Trojans closed their Montana trip with another five-set defeat to Montana Western on Oct. 23.

Dakota State came back to South Dakota and played their final non-conference match of the season at rival (RV) Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Oct. 27.  The Trojans rallied back from 2-0 deficit and forced the fifth set with the Tigers.  DSU fell short in their fourth straight five-set matches.
 

Trojans in the Frontier Conference ranks
According to the NAIA-PrestoStats as of Thursday, Dakota State leads the Frontier Conference with 14.51 kills per set.  The Trojans are also second in the NAIA in kills per set.  Prior to this weekend's matches, DSU hits .224 as a team which is third best in the Frontier.

Sophie Tuttle leads the Frontier Conference in overall kills per set, averaging 3.44 kills per set for the Trojans.  She also leads the conference with 289 total kills.  Tristyn Maras ranks fourth with 3.05 kills per set.

Maddi Langerock averages 10.58 assists per set this season, which is second in the Frontier Conference.  She is inching closer to 1,000 set assists this season for the Trojans. 

Kate VanRooyan is fifth in both digs per set and total digs in the league for DSU.  She averages nearly 5.00 digs per set (4.99 digs per set) and collects 429 digs this season.
 

Opponent Breakdown & Context
  • (1) Providence (Mont.): Providence is the lone Frontier Conference team that is undefeated in the league with an 18-0 record.  The Argos are currently on a 24-match winning streak since their lone setback to current No. 2 ranked Eastern Oregon.  UP is 25-1 overall record, inching closer to the Frontier Conference's first automatic bid to capture the regular season title.  Providence is currently No. 1 in the NAIA, the highest ranking that Dakota State will host at DSU Fieldhouse on Friday night (previous high was No. 2 Viterbo, Wis., during 2017 season).  UP won the first Frontier Conference meeting earlier this season in three straight sets in Great Falls, Mont.  Providence had not played a five-set match during the Frontier Conference season.
  • (RV) Montana State-Northern: MSU-Northern is 7-3 record in the last ten matches and is currently on a six-match winning streak prior to their match at No. 7 ranked Bellevue (Neb.) Friday evening.  The Skylights are 15-9 overall record and 13-5 record in the Frontier Conference matches, third in the conference standings.  Montana State-Northern won the first meeting with Dakota State last month in four sets in Havre, Mont.  During their six-match winning streak, MSU-N had swept Frontier Conference opponents in five straight matches before defeating Dickinson State (N.D.) in four sets on Oct. 25.
  • Mayville State (N.D.): Mayville State (N.D.) is eliminated from the Frontier Conference volleyball postseason tournament, holding an overall record of 6-17 and 4-14 record in the league.  The Comets snapped their eight-match losing skid with a 3-2 home thriller over (RV) Carroll (Mont.) on Oct. 25.  Mayville State is scheduled to travel at Dickinson State (N.D.) and Bismarck State (N.D.) this weekend and closes their 2025 season at home versus Dakota State and No. 7 Bellevue (Neb.) next week.  DSU swept MSU in the first Frontier Conference meeting earlier this month at DSU Fieldhouse.
  • Valley City State (N.D.): Valley City State (N.D.) is eighth in the Frontier Conference standings, holding a one match lead over Dickinson State as they battle for the final few spots for the upcoming conference postseason tournament.  The Vikings are 10-13 overall record and 8-10 record in the league.  VCSU rolled past Rocky Mountain (Mont.) in three straight sets in their previous match.  Valley City State are scheduled to visit Dickinson State Thursday and Bismarck State Friday before heading home for their final two matches at W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.  Dakota State swept VCSU in three straight sets in the first Frontier Conference meeting at DSU Fieldhouse.

  • Nov. 13-15: The top eight teams in the Frontier Conference volleyball standings will advance to the postseason tournament, held at PE Center in Helena, Mont.  The quarterfinals kick off on Thursday, Nov. 13, followed by the semifinals matches on Friday, Nov. 14.  The Frontier Conference Championship match is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15.  The winner of the postseason tournament will receive the league's second automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round, which is set for Saturday, Nov. 22 at 24 different campus sites.
