(RV) Dakota State (S.D.) opens Frontier Conference postseason play Thursday

No. 4 seed Trojans open postseason play versus No. 5 seed Montana Tech Thursday afternoon

MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University Trojan volleyball team (16-12 overall record, 12-10 Frontier Conference record) prepares for the Frontier Conference postseason tournament Thursday afternoon.  The Trojans, as No. 4 seed in the tournament, opens the tournament versus No. 5 seed Montana Tech (16-12 overall record, 12-10 Frontier) at 3:30 p.m. (Central Time)/2:30 p.m. (Mountain Time).

The three-day postseason conference tournament takes place at Carroll (Mont.) College PE Center (1601 N. Benton Ave.) in Helena, Mont.  There will be four quarterfinal matches on Thursday, starting at 1 p.m. (Central Time)/12 p.m. (Mountain Time).  The semifinals are set for Friday evening at 6 p.m. (CT)/5 p.m. (MT) and 8:30 p.m. (CT)/7:30 p.m. (MT), with winners moving to the championship match on Saturday evening at 8 p.m. (CT)/7 p.m. (MT).

Providence (Mont.) secured the first Frontier Conference's automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round, which is set for Saturday, Nov. 22 at campus sites.  The second automatic bid to the national tournament will be awarded to the tournament's champion.  In an event if the Argos win the tournament champion, the automatic bid will be awarded to the tournament's runner-up.

All seven Frontier Conference Tournament matches will be broadcast live through SWX Local Sports' channel and on their YouTube.
 

Final Frontier Conference Standings
Providence (Mont.) (28-2 overall record, No. 2 in the latest NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll) won the regular season outright title for the second consecutive year with 21-1 Frontier Conference record.  The Argos will be the No. 1 seed and receive the first of the two Frontier's automatic bids to the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Tournament Opening Round after winning the regular season title.

Bellevue (Neb.) (24-3 overall record, No. 7 in the NAIA national poll) secured the No. 2 seed in the postseason tournament after posting a 20-2 record in the Frontier contests.  Montana State University-Northern (17-11 overall record, receiving votes in the national poll) earned a No. 3 seed with a 15-7 Frontier Conference record.

There was a three-way tie for fourth place in the Frontier Conference standings with Dakota State (S.D.) (16-12 overall record, receiving votes in the national poll), Montana Tech (16-12 overall record), and Carroll (Mont.) (17-13 overall record) with each recording 12-10 conference record.

DaSU, MT, and CC went 2-2 record within three teams.  The Trojans earned the tiebreaker over the Orediggers and Saints with ten sets won, securing the No. 4 seed for the postseason tournament.

Montana Tech owned the tiebreaker over Carroll, via set points won.  Both teams split their two conference meetings in 3-0 sweeps, with the Orediggers scoring 141 total points to the Saints 131 total points in those six sets.  MT will be the No. 5 seed, followed by CC No. 6 seed.

Valley City State (N.D.) (13-14 overall record) and Montana Western (13-16 overall record) were tied for seventh in the Frontier Conference standings with 11-11 conference record.  The Vikings won the tiebreaker over the Bulldogs via in numbers of sets won (4-3).  VCSU will be the No. 7 seed, while UMW will be the No. 8 seed.

Dickinson State (N.D.) (13-14 overall record, 9-13 Frontier), Mayville State (N.D.) (6-21, 4-18 Frontier), Bismarck State (N.D.) (5-22, 3-19 Frontier), and Rocky Mountain (Mont.) (3-25, 2-20 Frontier) will not be playing in the conference tournament and ended their season Saturday.

After Dakota State's regular season finale at Valley City State (N.D.) on Nov. 8, Maddi Langerock surpassed Madalyn Groft as the third all-time set assists in volleyball program history.

Prior to the tournament, Langerock accumulated 3,065 set assists during her career at Dakota State.  She passed Groft with 3,040 set assists from 2020-24. 

Jill Weisser holds the second all-time set assists with 3,150 from 2000-04.  Stacy Westby holds the all-time set assists with 3,804 from 2011-125.

Langerock tallied 691 set assists in her freshman year at Dakota State, 728 assists in her sophomore season, 528 assists in her junior season, and racked up 1,091 set assists this season.

Kate VanRooyan tallied 1,704 career digs at DSU, surpassing Sydney Schell as the fifth all-time digs in Dakota State volleyball program history.  Ashley Brassfield holds the fourth all-time digs with 1,958 career digs from 2001-05.  Peyton Groft holds the all-time school record with 2,394 digs from 2018-22.

The Trojans recorded double digits wins for the 15th time in the previous 16 seasons.  DSU also earned their third consecutive winning season.  Dakota State also collected nine home victories on their court, the first time since the 2011-12 season that they recorded nine home victories.  The Trojans finished with a 9-2 home record in the Frontier Conference, despite falling to a pair of top two teams in the league.

According to the NAIA-PrestoStats as of Wednesday, Sophie Tuttle leads the Frontier Conference in overall kills per set and total kills for Dakota State.  She averages 3.36 kills per set and collected 333 kills this season.  Tristyn Maras also ranks fifth with 3.11 kills per set and fourth with 311 total kills.

Macey Wathen leads the Trojans with .329 hitting percentage, which is third best overall hitting percentage in the league.  Kate VanRooyan ranks fifth with 5.15 digs per set and 520 total digs. 

Maddi Langerock ranks second in the Frontier Conference with 10.49 set assists per set for DSU.

As a team, Dakota State leads the Frontier Conference in kills per set with 14.17 kills.  The Trojans also lead the league with 1,474 total kills and 1,337 total assists.  DSU ranks third in total digs with 1,963 digs and fifth with 18.88 digs per set.
 

Seven Trojans earn Frontier Conference Academic All-Conference
The Frontier Conference has announced that 130 women's volleyball student-athletes from twelve (12) conference schools as Academic All-Conference, presented by Billings Clinic and Logan Health.

The Trojans landed seven recipients on the academic honor list in the Frontier Conference.  To be eligible for the award, the student athletes must be at least a sophomore in standing and carry a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average (GPA).

  • Maddi Langerock – senior – business marketing – Tracy, Minn.
  • Tristyn Maras – sophomore – exercise science/biology – Windom, Minn.
  • Sophie Tuttle – sophomore – biology – North Sioux City, S.D.
  • Kate VanRooyan – junior – exercise science – Dakota Dunes, S.D.
  • Reagan VanRooyan – junior – exercise science – Dakota Dunes, S.D.
  • Ashley Wangler – sophomore – elementary education – Aberdeen, S.D.
The Frontier Conference will be holding their volleyball awards ceremony Wednesday evening at Lower Campus Center on the campus of Carroll (Mont.).  The academic all-conference, Champions of Character, All-Conference teams, and postseason awards will be announced.

Up Next
  • Nov. 22: The NAIA National Tournament Opening Round is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 22, with 24 opening round matches.  The winners will advance to the final site at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa, on Dec. 3-9.  There will be pool play with three teams each (each team will play two matches each in the pool), with the top teams advancing to the single elimination tournament format.
