DSU cruises past Jarvis Christian (Texas) 11-1 in baseball action

Trojans used fast start with six runs in the first two-and-half innings to defeat Bulldogs

HAWKINS, Texas – Dakota State (S.D.) used a fast start with six runs in the first two-and-half innings Tuesday afternoon, cruising past Jarvis Christian (Texas) of the Red River Athletic Conference 11-1 in seven innings at Bulldog Baseball Field.  The Trojans earned their third win over RRAC conference foe in three days.

Dakota State improved their overall record to 8-8.  Jarvis Christian fell to 1-11 overall record.

The Trojans head to Springfield, Mo., Friday and Saturday for a four-game series with Evangel (Mo.) of the Kansas College Athletic Conference.  The doubleheader starts at 12 p.m. on both days, held at the University Baseball Field.

Dakota State (S.D.) 11, Jarvis Christian (Texas) 1 – FINAL/7 innings

Darcy Barry kicked off the game with a walk for Dakota State.  He advanced to second base after Aidan Perry's sacrifice bunt.  After Cameron DeMaria's walk, Hunter Vikemyr produced an RBI single to score Barry to give DSU a 1-0 lead.

The Trojans continued their scoring run with four runs in the top second frame.  Seth Altwine hit a bunt single and advanced to second base on the same play caused by JCU's defensive error.  Dawson Portner registered for a walk.

Dakota State ballooned their lead to 4-0 as Barry smashed a 3-run home run to score Altwine and Portner in the top second. 

Perry followed up with a single and swiped to second base in the top second.  Cassidy Watt followed up with a single and advanced Perry to third base.  Cameron DeMaria produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Perry to extend the Trojans' lead to 5-0.

Dakota State expanded their lead to 6-0 in the top third as Portner drilled an RBI double to score Altwine, who hit a single with one out and swiped to second base.

The Bulldogs snapped their scoring drought with a run in the bottom half of the third.  Allan Mendoza was hit-by-pitch and advanced to second base after Jaylon Cotton's sacrifice bunt.  Eric Alonzo recorded an RBI single to score Mendoza as Jarvis Christian trailed 6-1 after three innings.

DSU added four runs in the top fifth inning to extend their lead to 10-1.

The Trojans produced a run in the top seventh inning.  Watt led off with a walk, followed by DeMaria's single toa advance Watt to second base.  Vikemyr reached on base by fielder's choice and advanced Watt to third base (DeMaria was out at second base).

Camaron Haller hit an RBI single to score Watt as DSU's lead grew to 11-1 in the top seventh.

The Bulldogs could not extend the game into the eighth inning as the Trojans secured the victory with a 10-run mercy rule after seven innings in a nine-inning game.

DSU outhit JCU 13-3 in the game.

Vikemyr finished the game by going 3-of-4 at the plate with three singles, RBI, run, and walk for Dakota State.  Watt and Altwine each added two singles.  Barry had a home run, three RBIs, walk, and scored three times.  Portner had a double, RBI, two runs, and a walk.  Watt had two hits, a walk, and a run.  DeMaria recorded a hit, RBI, and two walks.  Perry had a single.  Perry, Connor Raney, and Altwine each swiped one base.

Chris Rodriguez had a double for JCU.  Alonzo had a single and an RBI.  Brock Smith added a single.

Aiden Urbom (W, 1-0) earned the victory on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He tossed five innings and allowed a run on three hits and recorded three strikeouts.  Alexander Ferrin pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings in relief, while Curtis Flint closed the game with the final two outs.

Josue Vega (L, 0-3) took the defeat after working 1 1/3 innings for Jarvis Christian.  He gave up five runs on five hits.  The Bulldogs used four different pitchers in relief, with each pitcher tossing at least an inning.
