MADISON, S.D. – Jamestown (N.D.) used a late scoring run in both games Friday afternoon to pull away past Dakota State (S.D.), clinching the North Star Athletic Association four-game baseball series at Flynn Field. The Jimmies swept the Trojans on the second day by the scores of 7-2 and 7-4.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 14-15 and 1-3 NSAA conference record. Jamestown, receiving votes recognition in the latest NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, raised their overall record to 22-8 and 3-1 record in the league.
DSU continues their home stand next weekend at Flynn Field, playing another North Star's four-game series. The Trojans host Valley City State (N.D.) with a doubleheader starting next Friday (April 4) at 1 p.m. and next Saturday (April 5) at 12 p.m.
Game 1 – (RV) Jamestown (N.D.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL
Dakota State grabbed the first lead of the game in the bottom first inning.Â
Darcy Barry was hit-by-pitch and swiped to second base. He then swiped to third base with one out.Â
Connor Raney hit an RBI ground out to score Barry to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
After Triston Madison reached on base by a walk followed by Isaiah Roebuck's single with one out, Ben Patton blasted a 3-run home run as UJ overtook a 3-1 lead in the top second frame.
Cassidy Watt smashed a lead-off solo home run in the bottom second as the Trojans trailed 3-2.
Roebuck and Patton hit back-to-back doubles with two outs, as Patton produced an RBI to score Roebuck to extend UJ's lead to 4-2 in the top sixth inning.Â
Jamestown's lead grew to 7-2 in the top seventh as Jordan Singleton hit a 3-run home run.
Dakota State left a runner on first base when the game ended (
George Hogan recorded a walk), as the Jimmies secured the victory.
UJ tallied eight hits in the game compared to DSU five hits.Â
Cameron DeMaria led the Trojans by going 2-of-3 at the plate with a double and single. Watt added a home run and an RBI.Â
Brayden Byrum and
Dawson Portner each added a single. Raney recorded an RBI. Barry swiped two bases.
Patten paced the Jimmies with a home run, double, and drove in a game-high four runs. Roebuck added a double, two singles, and two runs scored. Singleton recorded a home run and three RBIs. Chase Burke and Alex Alva each added a hit. Burke, Alva, and Ryan Muizelaar each swiped one base.
Hunter Vikemyr (L, 4-3) recorded the defeat, despite tossing a complete game for Dakota State. He allowed seven runs on eight hits.Â
Ryan Radkey (W, 4-2) earned the victory after tossing 5 1/3 innings on the pitching mound for Jamestown. He gave up two runs on five hits. Ben Bohlmann (S, 2) collected the save as he pitched 1 2/3 shutout innings in relief. Radkey and Bohlmann each registered three strikeouts.
Game 2 – (RV) Jamestown (N.D.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL
Jamestown used a 4-0 scoring run to erase a 4-3 deficit after the fifth inning, earning a 7-4 four-game series finale victory over Dakota State.
Muizelaar hit a 2-run home run to open the nine-inning game with a 2-0 UJ lead in the top first.
The Trojans answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first inning, thanks to DeMaria's 2-run home run to score Barry who led off with hit-by-pitch. DSU knotted the game 2-2 after the first inning.
UJ regained their lead at 3-2 in the top third inning, thanks to Alva's solo home run to right field.
Dakota State answered with a run in the bottom fourth inning for the second tie of the game. Watt drilled a double with one out. Vikemyr followed up with an RBI single to score Daniel Leshner, catcher's courtesy runner for Watt, as DSU tied the game 3-3.
The Trojans earned their first lead of the game in the bottom fifth inning, thanks to Barry's solo home run with one out for a 4-3 lead.
Jamestown regained their lead in the top sixth after scoring two runs. Alva led off with a single and advanced to second after an error committed by DSU. Muizelaar added a single followed by Singleton's RBI single to score Alva as UJ tied the game 4-4 (Muizelaar advanced to third base).
The Jimmies took a 5-4 lead in the top sixth as Madison produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Muizelaar.
Burke led off the top seventh inning with a walk and advanced to third base after DSU's defensive misuse. He scored home after DSU's wild pitch, extending Jamestown's lead to 6-4.
Jamestown made it 7-4 in the top ninth inning after a bases loaded situation. Alva scored home on DSU's wild pitch to earn a three-run lead.
The Trojans left a runner on base in the bottom ninth when the game ended, securing the victory for the Jimmies.
UJ outhit DSU 10-9 in the game. Dakota State left 10 runners on base compared to Jamestown with eight runners left on base.
Perry and Hogan each had two hits for Dakota State. Barry and Vikemyr each added a hit and an RBI. DeMaria registered a hit, two walks, and two RBIs. Watt had a double. Portner recorded a single.
Muizelaar was 4-of-5 at the plate with a home run, three singles, and two RBIs for Jamestown. Singleton and Madison each added a hit and an RBI. Alva had two hits and an RBI. Burke and Roebuck each tallied a hit and a walk.
Alex Swack started the game and pitched five-plus innings for DSU. He allowed four runs on five hits and registered three hits.Â
Aiden Urbom (L, 2-1) took the defeat, giving up a run on three hits.Â
Braylon Bear worked f 3 1/3 innings in relief, while
Keaton Young recorded the final out in the top ninth.
Isaac Hanson tossed the first 4 1/3 innings for UJ. He gave up four runs on six hits and recorded five strikeouts. Austin Shelton (W, 2-0) earned the victory after pitching three scoreless innings and yielded the Trojans to two hits. Joe Hart (S, 2) recorded the save after working for 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
