DSU snaps losing skid with first NSAA softball win, splits with MSU

Bricker moves to fifth all-time in DSU softball history with 15 pitching victories

PORTLAND, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned to Paul Karlstad Field to complete their North Star Athletic Association softball four-game series with Mayville State (N.D.) with another doubleheader Monday afternoon.  The Trojans snapped their 16-game losing skid and earned their first NSAA conference win of the season with a 5-3 victory in the first game.  MSU stormed back from a 3-0 deficit by scoring seven straight unanswered runs in the final two innings for a 7-3 walk-off victory.

Dakota State is 5-33 overall record and 1-15 NSAA conference record.  Mayville State is 9-32 overall record and 3-13 record in the league after winning the four-game series with three wins.

The Trojans head to their final regular season contests, playing their final North Star's four-game series.  Dakota State plays home-and-away doubleheader with their traveling partner, Bellevue (Neb.).  The doubleheader starts Friday at Roy Smith Field in Omaha, Neb., and returns to Thue Field on Sunday for Senior Day.  Both doubleheaders kick off at 12 p.m.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 5, Mayville State (N.D.) 3 – FINAL

Mayville State took the first lead of the game in the bottom second inning after producing three singles from Desiree Lawrence, Antarez Sierra, and Mackenzie Hughes.  Hughes produced an RBI single to score Lawrence for 1-0 MSU lead.

Dakota State tied the game 1-1 in the top third inning.  Julia Maldonado drilled a double and advanced to third base after Hannah McFarland's ground out.  Ally Morrissey produced an RBI single to score Maldonado for the Trojans' first run of the game.

Lindsey Tulla hit an RBI single to score Lacey Mathiowetz after reaching on base by DSU's defensive error.  The Comets regained their lead at 2-1 after five innings.

DSU snapped their scoring drought after producing three runs in the top sixth.  The Trojans knotted the gameat 2-2 after Quincy Hartley hit an RBI double to score Morrissey, who led off with a walk.  After Jordyn Jeffries fly out to left field, Brenley Goebel – pinch runner for Hartley – advanced to third base.

Dakota State made it 3-2 as Goebel scored home after MSU's wild pitch in the top sixth inning.  Gabrielle Ortega-Alves reached safely on base after the Comets committed a defensive error.  Torrence Clelland followed up with an RBI single to score Ortega-Alves as the Trojans extended their lead to 4-2.

DSU's lead grew to 5-2 as Michelle Evdos hit an RBI single to score McFarland, who led off with a walk in the top seventh inning.

Mayville State hit a pair of singles in the bottom half of the seventh inning by Mathiowetz and Madison Terres.  Mackenzie Fuxa hit an RBI single to score Mathiowetz as the Comets trimmed DSU's lead to 5-3.

Dakota State ended the game as Lawrence was struck out swinging, securing the victory.

MSU tallied 12 hits in the game compared to DSU with six hits.  The Comets left ten runners on base, while the Trojans had six runners left on base.

Clelland and Hartley each collected a double and an RBI for Dakota State.  Morrissey and Evdos each had a single and an RBI.  Maldonado produced a double and a walk.  McFarland and Morrissey each registered a walk. 

Tulla was 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, single, and RBI for Mayville State.  Mathiowetz and Sierra each added two singles.  Hughes and Fuxa each recorded a single and an RBI.

Maycee Bricker earned a complete game victory in the pitching circle for DSU.  She allowed three runs (two unearned) on 12 hits and registered five strikeouts.  She moved to fifth all-time in DSU softball school history with 15 pitching wins.

Mathiowetz (L, 1-10) took the setback after tossing six innings for MSU.  She gave up four runs (one unearned) on five hits and recorded four strikeouts.  Bailey Momberg worked for one inning in relief, giving up a run on one hit.

Game 2 – Mayville State (N.D.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL

After two scoreless innings, Dakota State gained the first lead of the game in the four-game series finale.  McFarland recorded a walk with two outs in the top third and advanced to second on MSU's passed ball.  Morrissey drilled an RBI double to score McFarland for DSU's 1-0 lead.

Dakota State extended their lead in the top fifth inning with another run scored.  Hannah Feser was hit-by-pitch and advanced to third base when the Comets committed a wild pitch.  Maldonado hit an RBI single to score Feser as the Trojans ballooned their lead to 2-0.

DSU added a run in the top sixth inning, sparked by back-to-back singles by Evdos and Hartley.  After MSU's passed ball to advance Alexis Ressenguie, pinch runner for Evdos, to third base and Hartley to second base, Jeffries hit an RBI single to score Ressenguie for DSU 3-0 lead.

Mayville State snapped their scoring drought in the bottom sixth.  Hughes led off with a double.  Mathiowetz followed up with a single and advanced Hughes to home after DSU's defensive error (Mathiowetz advanced to third base on the same play), trailing 3-1 for MSU.

Terres hit an RBI single to score Mathiowetz as the Comets trailed 3-2 in the bottom sixth.

After the first out was recorded in the bottom seventh, MSU mounted a furious comeback to secure the victory.  Maizie Wolanski came in to pinch hit and recorded a single.  Sierra reached safely on base after DSU's defensive error and pinch runner Haylie Padgett advanced to third base.  Hughes hit a single to set up a bases loaded situation with one out.

Mathiowetz was hit-by-pitch and collected an RBI as the Comets tied the game 3-3 in the bottom seventh.  Mayville State ended the game as Tulla blasted a grand slam for a 7-3 victory.

MSU outhit DSU 11-6 in the game.

Morrissey hit a double and an RBI for Dakota State.  Jeffries added two singles and an RBI.  Maldonado had a single and an RBI. 

Tulla had a home run, single, and drove in four runs for Mayville State.  Hughes added three hits.  Terres had two hits and an RBI.  Mathiowetz recorded a single and an RBI.

Analicia Burgos started the game in the pitching circle for DSU and was re-entered late in the bottom seventh inning.  She worked for six innings and allowed three runs (one unearned) on nine hits.  Bricker (L, 4-9) recorded the defeat after tossing for one out in the bottom seventh.

Autumn McGough started the game for MSU.  She pitched five innings and gave up three runs on six hits.  She registered six strikeouts.  Momberg (W, 5-5) earned the win after tossing two shutout innings in relief.
