Yellow Jackets shut down Trojans in women’s soccer

Dakota State (S.D.) heads to Missouri for a pair of matches next week

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) fell 4–0 on the road to NCAA Division II foe Black Hills State (S.D.) Thursday evening at the Black Hills Power Sports Complex.  The Trojans fell to 0-9-1 overall record, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 2-1-2.  BHSU was playing their season home opener.

First-Half Highlights
Black Hills State controlled play from the opening whistle, outshooting Dakota State 13–5 in the first 45 minutes. The Yellow Jackets struck first at 15:44 when Whitney Hansen finished a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner off a feed from Bria Sargent. Just 12 minutes later, Jayda Hammer doubled the lead with a top-left strike assisted by Leah Day, giving the hosts a 2–0 advantage at halftime

Second-Half Highlights
The Yellow Jackets added two more goals to seal the result. Day converted unassisted from the top center in the 56th minute, and Peyton Hill capped the scoring in the 89th minute off an assist from Ella Cornelius

Trojan Highlights
Dakota State managed seven total shots, led by Nichole Corona with two, including the Trojans' lone shot on goal. Goalkeeper Sierra Verplancke faced relentless pressure, recording one save while the Trojans defense weathered 30 total shots from Black Hills State. DSU earned three corner kicks to the Yellow Jackets' three and was whistled for seven fouls.

Up Next
Dakota State continues their road stretch next week, traveling to the state of Missouri.  The Trojans take a pair of teams in Columbia, making the first stop at (RV) Columbia (Mo.) next Thursday.  The match is set for 4:30 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Field.
